Voigtlander SUPER WIDE-HELIAR 15mm F4.5

Yes, that's a real pig's head wearing a "Santa Claus" hat in the centerpiece.

The reindeer sausage was quite good. Really.

Pyramiden was a coal mining settlement on Svalbard that was founded by the Swedes in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927. Despite the harsh climate, the Soviet’s turned Pyramiden into a settlement and by the 1980’s had over 1000 people living there. As any foreigner could visit the town without a visa, it was meant to showcase the Soviet Union at it’s best and prove that Communism could create a true Utopian society. It boasted a cultural palace with a cinema & library, a swimming pool, gym, school, sports grounds and even had grass imported from Ukraine.

The coal mines however were never profitable and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, living standards and salaries began to dwindle. In March 1998 the last coal was extracted and by October of that year the last residents departed.

The law on Svalbard states that anything abandoned for ten years means the ownership goes back to the state. In 2008, the Russians returned, but not to mine coal. As Pyramiden is technically in the West, it’s easy to see why they would want to maintain a presence here. To keep sovereignty, at least two people have to live here all year round. Now that tourism to the ghost town is on the rise, this number can be up to 20 in the summer. Despite this, almost everything remains frozen in the Soviet-era and the town is home to the most Northernmost statue of Lenin.

We stopped for ice creams (and an ice lolly in JJ's case) at the newish cafe, the Wish Tower Cafeteria, which was opened in 2013.

Here are two photos taken during our break! We watched this naughty seagull helping himself to some snacks on the table, until some members of staff came out and shooed him away! (He's not my seagull, by the way!)

Desayuno y croquis en 20 minutos

San Telmo, BUE - Argentina

Night, 160 Tungsten chrome film, 8 minutes, f5.6, full moon. Huge!

In 2004, I was granted night access to the long forgotten and neglected, Hunters Point, Naval Shipyard. Over the course of 5 consecutive full moons I photographed in every corner of the nearly 500 acre facility. Originally opened as a commercial shipyard in 1870, the land was seized by the US military in 1942 and transformed into a vital repair base during WWII. The Navy closed the base in 1974 and most of the area has remained uninhabited ever since.

Stories of widespread radioactive contamination, it's location in one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in San Francisco and many locked and patroled gates have kept the base out of the public eye for decades. There are dozens of abandoned buildings. Warehouses, offices and drydock pumphouses, some dating all the way back to 1870. These are some of the oldest buildings in San Francisco, just abandoned and forgotten. Giant gantry cranes stand rusting alongside the broken and flooded drydocks. On the hill above the dockyards stands a residential neighborhood. Built in the 1920s and 30s and seized by the Navy for officers housing, it has also stood abandoned for 30 years. The streets look like a post apocalyptic movie set. The entire relic strewn base is just minutes from the downtown of one of the west coast's largest cities.

Ein alter Chemiebetrieb

Had to make a quick trip to see my sister in Ithaca, so I decided to go a little further to visit one of my favorite Kmart stores in its last days. Glad I did as I scored two Kmart baskets.
