He was born by caesarean section on December 25th, 1918, in Madison, Wisconsin. Nearly institutionalized at an early age, he surprised doctors with his above normal intelligence, unusual in such cases. He attended public schools in Madison. His bizarre appearance led to his being ostracized by fellow students. Outside of school one day, he was struck by an open beer can flung from the window of a passing car by some high school bullies. Slowing down, they taunted him with jeers, insults and threats. Speeding off, the car unexpectedly veered to the left, and struck an ancient Oak, killing three of the occupants. A fourth occupant became severely agoraphobic, and confined himself largely in his bedroom closet for the next 41 years. After this, he was left alone by other students. Three days after graduating from high school, he forgot to turn sideways while walking through a door (as he was forced to do his entire life) at a local candy store and knocked himself out cold. He was in a coma for three weeks. When he recovered, he was able to speak fluent Swedish. Doctors never resolved this mystery. Although he had a multitude of eyes, he was blind in two of them, having shot them out with a bee bee gun as a child. As a young adult, he dabbled in painting, and was barely able to make a living by selling his paintings on street corners or at local festivals. People purchased his paintings out of pity or because they thought it was cool to have a painting by that weird looking guy. Unfortunately, no surviving paintings can be located, and no image was ever recorded of them. However, it is said they were all signed with a one inch brush, dipped in Cadmium Red Medium, in Swedish. Andy Warhol is said to have purchased one of his paintings. When he was 25, he inherited a large sum of money from an uncle. He lived with his eccentric mother until her death a few years later. At this time, 47 cats were removed from the home by local authorities. He continued to occupy the house, until his own death in 1972. After his death it was discovered that he had a collection of 1,756 vintage ladies compacts kept in a shopping cart in his bedroom. He had apparently collected them from the local St. Vincent de Paul’s thrift shop over the years. He also had accumulated another 17 cats, one of whom had two tails, and another one of whom was probably half-dog. His body vanished from the funeral home while it was being prepared. Years later, a bizarre skull, matching his unique characteristics, was confiscated during a drug bust in Madison, apparently having been converted into a bong. It wound up in the possession of a distant relative, who had it restored, and then tried to sell it on Ebay. However, the relative forgot to indicate that it was being sold for educational purposes only, and the auction was cancelled. It was later obtained by the Anthropology Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and added to a large collection of pathological specimens in the Social Sciences building. At this time it was photographed. When an inventory was conducted on the collection some years later, the skull turned up missing, along with the skull of the half dog/half cat. The skull clearly shows the ravages of his habitual candy consumption.

Stepping out into uncertain waters.

Allured by the uncertain path.

A leap of faith with this crossing. Stone to stone.

Relentless currents.

No turning back.

A decision.

This is my canvas, my vision of the landscape before me. With all mighty palette knife in hand. Loaded with titanium white, a touch of prussian blue and raw umber, I paint the water before me. Breaking the currents along the canvas. A bit of sap green and cadmium yellow for a warm mossy nook. And finally, a touch of alizarin crimson with gold ochre for some warm Winter trees. It is done.

Now, where was I? Oh yes, how am I going to cross this stream?

Acrylic on Paper

2022

This piece used the leftover paint from the limited color palette of Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Orange Dark, Black, and White. There is always room for iridescent gold and Perl.

It was made using the properties of the watercolor paper wetted down with the acrylics thinned and flowing. I was able to work it into something that I really liked, but it could as easily have been a muddy mess.

For me it is a tree, others see what they will.

Cheers.

Actually, the person who purchased this painting sees beaches, ocean, and land with flowers. They hung it upside down from the way that it is displayed here because they felt the ocean/beach view so strongly.

I still found and see the huge old tree.

The zinc violet is also a plant that only can grow on a soil that is contaminated with heavy metals such as zinc, lead or cadmium. The plant is very rare and legally protected.

The flowers resemble the common violet, the only difference are the leaves.

The zinc violet has no leaves, but thickenings on the flower stalks from which the absorbes excess of heavy metals is decharged via membranes.

This place is in the city of Krasnogorsk, Moscow region. Russia.

The settlement lies on the spurs of the Smolensk-Moscow Upland; the relief gradually decreases from the north-west of the city to the south and southeast, lying in the floodplain of the Moscow river. Ravine erosion processes are common. Absolute elevation marks are in the region of 190-220 meters. The presence of large reserves of groundwater belonging to the Moscow artesian basin and confined to rocks of the Paleozoic age, to deposits of the Jurassic and Cretaceous systems, made it possible to organize reliable water supply to the city from artesian sources.

Krasnogorsk is located within the forest park zone of Moscow. The city is quite densely surrounded by forests, mostly mixed, with individual sections of conifers. The species composition of forest stands is predominantly represented by spruce, birch, aspen. Treeless territories are heavily urbanized.

The environmental situation in the city is deteriorating. In the vicinity of the city, among the most important environmental aspects, a relatively high loss of forests stands out (and the anthropological factor here is only in third place among the reasons: the main ones are adverse weather conditions, as well as pests and diseases). There is a certain pollution of groundwater (there are excess MPC for manganese, lead, cadmium and ammonia). The radiation pollution of the atmosphere in Krasnogorsk is at the level of background values (9 - 17 μR / h).

At this point there is a ski slope about 300 meters long, the slope with a lift and a rental point is called "Chernevskaya SKI Resort". “The decision to equip the hill was made in the fall of 2017. This measure allowed not only to recreate the open ski slope in Krasnogorsk, but also preserved the natural landscape, as well as the appearance of a favorite place of the townspeople. Previously, the territory was planned for capital development, ”specified on the website of the administration of Krasnogorsk.

Greenmount Homestead (5 Km west of Walkerston), Qld, Australia is one of Mackay's most valued historic attractions.

The famous front door of Greenmount Homestead is surrounded by stunning stained glass lead lights. Fun fact about stained glass: red is one of the rarest and most expensive colours to make? Why? Colour is added to glass by mixing metal oxides or powders into the glass when it's still molten. Cobalt for blue, cadmium for yellow, tin for white, and for red - gold dust.

Built in 1915 by Albert Cook, the former cattle property forms part of the original claim taken up by Captain John Mackay in 1862. Following the death of Albert’s son Tom, the homestead was gifted to the city in 1983 and has operated as a heritage site ever since.

The grounds contain a number of buildings, including a Queenslander style homestead, staff quarters, garage and blacksmith’s workshop, which together house a collection of more than 20,000 artefacts.

The Red River as it passes through Gadea (Villarrasa) Huelva, a very peculiar river born in (Nerva) Huelva ..... A unique place in the world

There are two factors that make the Tinto river unique in the world: its geological characteristics and the richness of its minerals. It is an area where pyrite, chalcopyrite and other complex sulfur minerals abound. Due to the peculiar composition of its waters, the Tinto river does not host fish. But it does offer the necessary resources for certain microorganisms to live in and thanks to them.

The waters of the river have a very complex chemistry. Its red waters are characterized by their very acidic pH, with a high content of heavy metals: iron (the most abundant), copper, cadmium, manganese, etc. And despite the fact that it is an extreme environment, representatives of all the branches of the tree of life live in them. Bacteria and more than a thousand fungi have been found, but there are no fish. The animals that live in the Rio Tinto are unicellular or multicellular.

A few centimeters deep there is no oxygen and the bacteria that develop have the ability to breathe iron. Therefore, the color changes in that area and is bluish or transparent.

NASA travels to the province of Huelva

The environment of the Tinto river presents extreme aridity, high ultraviolet radiation, high salt content, extreme temperatures, etc. These are characteristics similar to those of the planet Mars. For this reason, NASA has chosen the Tinto River as the habitat to study because of its possible similarity to the environment of the red planet.

The Opportunity robot found a mineral on Mars called jarosite. It is a sulfate of iron, potassium and sodium that is only synthesized if there is water (it must be acidic water and loaded with metals). The fact that the Tinto river was very rich in jarosite aroused the attention of NASA scientists, who began to develop research projects in this area.

The study, with the participation of the Higher Council for Scientific Research, has confirmed the possibility that certain types of organisms can survive under the restrictive conditions of the planet Mars.

"A warm smile is the universal language of kindness." - William Arthur Ward (American motivational writer).

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 28th of December is "smiley in selective colour", a theme chosen because this is the last theme of this year. Where does the time go? Now this theme sounds fairly easy in comparison to some we have had this year, but whereas some of those more difficult themes have been easy for me, this one was far more challenging. Why? Because I don't have a single smiley in the house, and I have no idea where to get one from. So, I decided the only solution was to draw my own, which I did with my beloved Derwent Studio pencils. I did that on purpose partially because I needed a smiley, but also, because the theme is selective colour, I wanted to show the name of the colours I used in the photo in the black and white portion of the photo. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile like my smiley!

As this is the last "Smile on Saturday" before the New Year, I should just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the group a very happy New Year. May the year ahead be filled with happiness and joy for you all.

Though the ability of distinguishing (some) frequencies of light has a physical basis, the 'translation' of any such frequencies into colours is an achievement of the brain. Colours are 'made' in the brain. We can either see them directly, or, if the image is in B+W, we can imagine them by reading the labels: Mars Black, Deep Green, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine. It may also help to know that the screw-on lids are Bright Yellow. My guess would be, however, that different people would colourise this image in different ways. This is because the individual colour perception varies. Mine is questionable and I sometimes overdo it. That is why I am feeling more comfortable with Monochrome.

The collodion plates are made covering a glass plate or black metal plate with collodion and salts of cadmium and / or potassium, sensitized with silver nitrate. Then you have to take the photo and reveal it in about 5 minutes, before the emulsion dries. It is one of the oldest photographic processes in the World, invented in 1851, and which dominated photography until 1880. But now it has resurfaced, as the images, very elaborate to create, that it gives are unique, razor sharp, magical and unrepeatable.

Water hyacinth/ Aguapé – Eichhornia crassipes

.Scientific Name: Eichhornia crassipes

.Popular Names: Water hyacinth, Baroneza, Camalote, Water hyacinth, Murumuru, Mururé, Pareci, Peacock, Queen of the lakes

.Family: Pontederiaceae

.Category: Aquatic Plants, Floating Plants

.Climate: Equatorial, Subtropical, Tropical

.Origin: Central America, North America, South America

.Height: 0.1 to 0.3 meters

.Luminosity: Full Sun

.Life Cycle: Perennial

An aquatic and floating plant, the Water Hyacinth ( Aguapé) is very ornamental. However in some situations of overpopulation it can become a problem in lakes. With round, large and shiny leaves, the Water hyacinth multiplies quickly. Its inflorescence composed of beautiful purplish blue flowers resembles that of the hyacinth.

In landscaping, the Water hyacinth is used to populate lakes and water mirrors, favoring aquatic life, especially fish. It should be grown in full sun in naturally fertile, pH-corrected water.

The species originates from freshwater bodies in the warm tropical regions of South America, with a natural distribution in the Amazon and Rio de la Plata basins. It is used in phytoremediation and as a medicinal plant, soil fertilizer and ornamental plant, although it is considered a dangerous invasive species in tropical and subtropical regions.

It is considered one of the fastest growing plants known, in most cases reproducing vegetatively through stolons that are released from the mother plant. In Southeast Asia, cases were reported in which the population spread 2 to 5 m per day. There are data known to indicate that, in optimal situations, the number of plants doubles every two weeks. The invasive capacity of the species derives in large part from its ability to self-clone, producing large floating masses of plants all with the same genetic makeup.

The species tolerates air and water temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 35 °C, but does not grow below 12 °C or above 33-35 °C.

It is naturalized in vast areas of tropical and subtropical regions on all continents and is included in the list of the 100 most dangerous invasive alien species in the world published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Despite this, it can be used in phytoremediation operations, being one of the most studied species for this purpose due to its purifying characteristics and ease of proliferation. As the species obtains from the water all the nutrients it requires for its metabolism, as nitrogen and phosphorus, together with potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, ammonium, nitrite, sulfate, chlorine, phosphate and carbonate ions, which are the more important.

It has a root system, which may have associated microorganisms, which favors the purifying action of the plant.

In general, these plants are capable of retaining in their tissues a wide variety of heavy metals, including cadmium, mercury and arsenic. The mechanism of retention of these ions is based on the formation of complexes between the heavy metal and the amino acids present in the cells.
