Thirty-five below zero, and the moose meat stored in this cache is frozen like a rock.

I stood beneath a very large cache, to capture the Alaskan scenery that lay beyond. This cache was built for the enjoyment of the tourists that visit our state each year. Smaller and more practical cache's are built near cabins in rural Alaska, to protect meat and supplies during the long cold winter's.
A makeshift cache can be made by hanging the food from a tree branch using rope. The cache should be 100 metres from your campsite and downwind if possible. To be effective, the food must be distanced from the branch, the trunk, and the ground. When a suitable tree isn't available, hanging the food over a cliff is a possible alternative.
In areas popular with both people and bears, permanent caches are often built. These include poles for hanging, steel cabinets, and raised structures with removable ladders.
How good is the memory of a Northern Hawk Owl when it comes to retrieving its cache scattered over a wide area? I couldn't find a definitive answer. I saw the bird catching and caching three voles in one afternoon. I was curious to find out if I would see the cached voles a day later. The composite picture above is taken 24 hours apart. The one on the left shows the bird leaving its dead prey on the branch for caching and the second on the right was taken 24 hours later - the prey is still there and not consumed. If it's storing for long term then 24 hours is not enough for it to retrieve its cache. The other possibility is that the abundance of prey in the area doesn't require the bird to fall back to its cache. But, isn't that wasteful or attract other cache pilferers?

No-Name trying to pass off as an orange. Nice try.
