Portuguese coastline near Cabo da Roca, Sintra in a stormy day.

From the Cabo da Roca my mind can wandering by the Atlantic

Ocean and clear out all the weekly stress.

In comparison with Paris, this was a pleasant warm evening with approximately 17 degrees celsius and a full moon, at Cabo da Roca lighthouse, the European most occidental end.

From here theres only the Atlantic sea some islands and the American continent far far way.

the westernmost point of continental Europe... the best place in the world to understand what it is to be Portuguese...

The dramatic, rugged coastline of Cabo da Roca, Portugal (farthest western point in continental Europe) haunts the soul with its beauty.

Sintra is a charming village just about 20 kms from Lisbon's center. The village itself is beautiiful and, in the mountain above it, the palace and castle are also jewels that justify a visit.

What isn't so well known is its coastal area, where you can explore beautiful beaches and amazing rock formations, Along the cooast you will find excellent trekking paths to explore the area.

The spot where this shot was taken has a magnificent view that extends as far as Praia da Ursa (you can see one of its iconic seastacks) and to Cabo da Roca with its far distant lighthouse.

Last February, profiting from a beautiful day, I went to Bear Beach to shoot its amazing sea stacks from a different perspective: from the sea, with a drone. Immediately after its take-off, when it was at 20 m altitude, I’ve checked the drone’s camera by taking a single shot. I wasn’t worried with composition, right exposure or anything else. I was just trying to see if the camera was working. This was the rather unexpected result and I only realized what I had got when I’ve arrived home and downloaded the pictures….

What you see here is the beautiful landscape adjacent to Bear Beach, with Cape Roca’s (“Cabo da Roca”) silhouetted lighthouse on the image’s far right.

Cabo da Roca is Europe Westernmost point and from there you have magnificent views to the sea. Bear Beach (adjacent to Cape Roca) is, on my mind, Portugal’s most beautiful beach. On my gallery you have some shots of this amazing beach:

Now with some additional ones to be posted soon….

Went out to shoot the Neowise comet, but came back with a lighthouse shot!

Last Thursday I had a Neowise shoot scheduled, but my plans were derailed by bad weather (cloudy and windy conditions). Postponed for next day (Friday last week) as weather forecast was reassuring. Upon arrival to the spot (Cape Roca, about 30 kms from Lisbon) I was dismayed as the conditions were exactly the same as in the previous day: cloudy (as can be seen from this shot) and extremely windy (impossible to use the tripod), making the comet shoot a mirage.

This Cape Roca’s lighthouse shot, proves I was there! It’s an handheld shot that I find interesting due to its original perspective. Taken from close to Bear Beach (northwards of the lighthouse) it provides a striking image of the amazing terrain that drops abruptly to the sea. The golden hour light enveloped the whole image and created a soft and beautiful mood.

Hope you’ll enjoy the remains of my botched expedition to chase a comet… Have a wonderful day, dear flickr friends!

In these times of pandemic and social distancing, Bear Beach (“Praia da Ursa”) may well be your destination! You will see there almost no one and this is not unrelated to the difficulty of the descent to the beach…

It’s located on the Portuguese Atlantic west coast just north of Cabo da Roca (just a few km distant from Cascais or Sintra). This beach is a litle and less well known gem. Unspoilt and wild, it is often cited as the most beautiful in the area and one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Its name comes from the "Rocha da Ursa" (bear rock) one of two huge sea stacks at the northern end of the beach. It is said that the rock resembles a bear with its cub (not shown in this photo, but other photos of this beach that are displayed in my gallery show it:

Io ricordo questo … questo

Deboli tramonti, alta marea

Il tramonto più debole e la marea più alta

Immagino che la cavalchiamo

Immagino che è solo un simbolo

Alla fine del continente

Al limite del continente

I remember this...this

Low ebb, high tide

The lowest ebb and highest tide

I guess we took us for a ride

I guess its just a gesture.

At the edge of the continent

Access is difficult, to say the least. The descent is done by foot down a steep sided valley with plenty of loose rocks under foot. That is certainly the reason it stays off the beaten track (fortunately!).

The strains of the route are more than justified by the superb landscape that awaits with the enormous rocky formations dominating the beach.

Praia das Maçãs, Portugal

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal, continental Europe and the Eurasian land mass. The cape is in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra, near Azóia, in the southwest of the district of Lisbon, forming the westernmost extent of the Serra de Sintra
