The Priory church of St Peter in Thurgarton was founded c1119 - 1139 by Ralph de Ayncourt for Augustinian canons. Along with other monasteries it was dissolved in 1534. The tower was originally one of a pair. The Great West Door to the far left is all that remains of the original medieval priory.
Although the chancel was added in 1852, there are still 3 C15th choir stalls with misericords. These include carved heads, figures and foliage.
This misericord is now detached and shows figures wrestling.

Fresh from repaint (and before all of the legal lettering had been applied) WE1330 rests alongside C1119 at Quedgeley, summer 1999.
Sadly, two years later, I had to sell 1330. C1119 has since been converted into a mobile caravan :(.

The house to the right was built on the site of the monastery in 1777. It was rebuilt for John Gilbert Cooper between 1884 - 1904 and was used as a "Palace" for the 1st Bishop of Southwell. Surrounding land was given to Trinity College, Cambridge who retain nominal responsibility for providing a parish priest.

The Augustinian Priory of St Mary was founded c1119 by Robert de Brus Lord of Skelton Castle and 1st Lord of Annandale, an ancestor of King Robert the Bruce . It was the earliest and most important Augustinian Priory and one of the richest monastic foundations in England with grants from the Crown as well as de Brus, supported by the local nobles and gentry.
Much destroyed by fire in 1289, it was rebuilt in gothic style on a grander scale in 14c.
Dissolved in 1540 the estates were acquired by fhe Chaloners who built the hall. The priory buildings were demolished and stone re-used
except for the east window which the Chaloners preserved as a romantic vista
Still owned by the Chaloners, it is now in the care of English Heritage
Archaeological excavations have been carried and the founders remains were found behind the high altar.

RELL, C1119 receives the 'correct' shade of Tilling green inside the bodyshop of the former Bristol Omnibus/ Stroud Valleys depot in London Road. When first painted, we bought a green that was much darker. The depot is now the car park of Waitrose
Delivered to Bristol Omnibus Co in
August 1969 and numbered C1119,
the bus worked in the City as a dual
door 44 seater, upon withdrawal it
soon entered preservation as seen
here, reported to have been converted
into a caravan more recently.
RELL, C1119 makes her first appearance in preservation at an event held by Badgerline whereby all available RE's were put out on service for enthusiasts. C1119 'duped' the service bus to Wells.

RELL, C1119 is seen a couple of years before we bought her inside Gloucester bus depot where she was having some work done. The bus was owned at the time by the Royal Oak pub in Hucclecote to take children on trips as far as France. We expressed an interest in buying her and took posession in December 1990.
ECW Bristol RELL3/775 UHU221H C1119 at Welshpool, now owned I think by Lee Jones of Oxford. It's nice to see an RE about the place as it's these that were my school bus for a while, before they got replaced on the route by an ECW Bristol VR.

RELL, C1119 was brought out for the afternoon as part of the celebrations marking the retirement of long serving depot manager Harold Smith, seen posing for the cameras. He was driven home in C1119 too.
