We had an absolute blast exploring the Silver Thread Scenic Byway this last week. Fall color was peak awesomeness and I finally got to check out North Clear Creek Falls! Ever since I first saw a photo of these falls years ago I have been wanting to visit. Now that I have I would have to call this a somewhat hidden gem that easily is one of our finest waterfalls in the state.

In some ways these falls remind me of a western Colorado version of Palouse Falls in Washington, which is high praise indeed. We see them lit here by the full moon that followed last week's lunar eclipse (which was also awesome).

Have a great weekend ahead all!

Edit: I have replaced the first version posted with this as the previous had something happen with color management and came across far too warm.

Not the highway....

Minnesota Highway 38, aka the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway.

This upsy-downsy, curvy, sometimes bumpy two-laner runs for just 47 miles from Grand Rapids to Effie, Minnesota. They have "improved" parts of the highway, but as of September 2017, there are still parts of it (like this) that do what most old highways used to do.

On the south end, Grand Rapids has numerous attractions and points of interest, including the Forest History Center and Judy Garland Museum.

On the north end, the route intersects Minnesota Highway 1, another fun old two-laner that runs from North Dakota to Lake Superior.

The awesome old road crosses the Laurentian Divide where water flows either north to Hudson's Bay or south to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. Part of it also goes through the Chippewa National Forest (granddaddy of the Superior National Forest) with a ranger station in Marcell.

The lakes and woods along the way provide great places for fishing, hunting, hiking, and other recreational activities. You'll find several resorts and campgrounds in both the Grand Rapids and the Marcell area.

There are points of interest and interpretive stops along the way, making it not only scenic and fun, but interesting, too. I highly recommend taking this route if you're ever up in this part of Minnesota.

An unexpected close up along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway

Got to do a little hiking in the Elkhorn Mountains today outside of Baker City around Phillip's Lake on the Elkhorn Scenic Byway. Always one of our favorite birding spots in Baker County. A little early for fall color but saw some wildlife including this unexpected close up of a resident dragonfly

Baker County’s diverse geography and habitat are ideal for wildlife watching. Throughout the year visitors can see deer, bighorn sheep, antelope, and elk. Less common but just as exciting are the occasional moose, and black bears.

Feels good to be out there at the crack of dawn again.

Since I’m not the facebooking type, I should mention here that I was honored to be invited to be a part of a group show featuring unique photos of the Space Needle at Brenda Pederson's wonderful Hammie Salon gallery during the April 8 Georgetown Art Attack.

A Beautiful weekend Along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon.

Enjoyed a beautiful weekend along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway between the towns of Baker City and Halfway, with beautiful blue skies and amazing views of the Wallowa Mountains along the way including a stop at the Halfway Farmers Market, and some time exploring the town of halfway and surrounding century farms.

The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at Baker City and La Grande. During the fall the byway is an ideal route for exploring the regions fall foliage and autumn splendor with some great wildlife viewing opportunities along the way.

The byway is a popular destination for group tours and offers visitors a chance to experience small town Americana in small towns like Halfway, as they explore the rugged and spectacular Northeast Oregon landscape along the way.

Hwy 86 between Baker City and the Hells Canyon Dam at the bottom of the canyon is open year round providing visitors access to the deepest river gorge in North America.

Thousand Springs Scenic Byway

The I. B. Perrine Bridge is four-lane truss arch span in the western United States. Located at Twin Falls, Idaho, it carries U.S. Highway 93 over the Snake River Canyon, connecting to Jerome County and Interstate 84.

The Perrine Bridge is approximately 1,500 feet (457 m) in total length, with a main span of 993 feet (303 m) and a deck height of 486 feet (148 m) above the Snake River it is the eighth highest bridge in the United States. The elevation above sea level for the bridge deck is approximately 3,600 feet (1,100 m).

The bridge is named for I. B. Perrine (1861–1943), who spearheaded the early 20th century irrigation projects in the Magic Valley region and is largely credited as the main founder of Twin Falls; a statue of Perrine is at the visitors' center at the south end of the bridge.

New Mexico. The camera interpreted this image too colorfully, but I kinda like it. Will return camera setting to "accurate."

The Essex Scenic Byway is one of the most picturesque drives in coastal New England passing through coastal towns like Salem, Marblehead, Gloucester and Rockport Massachusetts. This little fisherman's shack sits beside the marina in Rockport.

This Old section of Hwy80 was once a Mother Road, it winded through the mountains near Jacumba, down to the Anza Borrego Desert far below. Later The highway was straightened and widened and this section was bypassed. Today it looks like a view of the Post Apocalyptic World.

Mount Bachelor is so called because it "stands apart" from the Three Sisters, a group of three volcanic mountains that are northwest of Mount Bachelor. In early days Bachelor Butte was frequently called "Brother Jonathan", or "Mount Brother", but both eventually fell out of use.

This may appear like an autumn image, but was actually taken in May. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway had just opened.
