A bumble bee (also spelled as bumblebee) is any member of the bee genus Bombus, in the family Apidae. There are over 250 known species, existing primarily in the Northern Hemisphere although they are common in New Zealand and Tasmania.
Bumble bees are social insects that are characterised by black and yellow body hairs, often in bands. However, some species have orange or red on their bodies, or may be entirely black. Another obvious (but not unique) characteristic is the soft nature of the hair (long, branched setae), called pile, that covers their entire body, making them appear and feel fuzzy. They are best distinguished from similarly large, fuzzy bees by the form of the female hind leg, which is modified to form a corbicula: a shiny concave surface that is bare, but surrounded by a fringe of hairs used to transport pollen (in similar bees, the hind leg is completely hairy, and pollen grains are wedged into the hairs for transport).
Like their relatives the honey bees, bumble bees feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young.
One common, yet incorrect, assumption is that the buzzing sound of bees is caused by the beating of their wings. The sound is actually the result of the bee vibrating its flight muscles, and this can be achieved while the muscles are decoupled from the wings—a feature known in bees but not other insects. This is especially pronounced in bumblebees, as they must warm up their bodies considerably to get airborne at low ambient temperatures. Bumble bees have been known to reach an internal thoracic temperature of 30 °C (86 °F) using this method. - Wikipedia.

The honeybee, Apis mellifera, is the proclaimed state insect of over ten states including North Carolina. A hard working and ecologically important species, the honeybee is one of the animal pollinators responsible for the pollination of nearly 75% of the world's 115 leading agricultural crops. Though other insects, birds, and bats are also pollinators, the growth and health of crops are majorly dependent on honeybees. This is a great example of a keystone species as other species rely heavily on them and ecosystems could collapse without them. It's well known that honeybee populations have been declining for two decades (more than a 90% decline) mainly due to varroa mites and disease. Colony Collapse Disorder, an event in which the majority of worker bees abandon the hive and queen, was recognized as a serious threat in 2006 and it's thought to have been caused by by pesticides and habitat destruction, as well as parasite infestations. However, it was reported that the number of commercial honeybee colonies rose 3% in 2017 thanks to the work of beekeepers and the EPA's policy that prohibits the use of certain neonicotinoid pesticides while bees are present. Likewise, there's been a development of approved varroa mite control products. The rise in populations is hopeful but there is still more work to be done to ensure the stability of this species.

I really didn't have a goal this week. I was short on both ideas and time. So Buzz and I just hung out in the yard for awhile to see what might happen. When he heard a car coming down the road, he perked his ears up nicely and looked like a serious guard dog. Despite his intense look, he is really quite gentle and afraid of anything unusual.
Today my daughter had a party, so us boys were left home alone.
We managed to tackle a racing car LEGO Technics model and built a kit that has a buzz wire and probe for you to try and make it to the end without it buzzing....
Although my daughter thought this was boring on her return and has quite annoyingly been trying to play a tune on it all afternoon...
Our Daily Challenge -- Dreaming.
The new Canon EOS-M was announced today. It's Canon's first mirrorless system camera, and it looks like it is basically a Rebel in a smaller body. A lot of Canon enthusiasts seem to be sorely disappointed. It isn't competition for the higher end mirrorless cameras from Fuji and Sony. It is closer to Nikon's cute little 1, except that it doesn't come in pink. One review I read said it is targeted at "latte moms" rather than prosumers.
Nevertheless, I think Buzz secretly wants it. I think he even dreams of having a camera small enough to fit in my purse with him that comes with an adapter that makes it fully compatible with existing Canon EF lenses.
Of course, Buzz's camera wish list is pretty long and definitely steeper than his budget. A new purse camera might have to wait. We still need to be able to pay for lattes, after all.
About two weeks ago, we moved 242 live bee hives and about as many empty hives from fort myers, fl to bristol, fl. We utilized our 1979 kenworth k100c, affectionately known as 'brutus', to boogie north in the wee hours of the morning so our cargo wouldn't fly away. Only got stung once in the process...
