California Navel oranges are my favorite for eating,

for juice Florida oranges are the juiciest.

Something a bit different for things that go together, what good is a dull cleaver or what good is a sharpener with no blade, let us put an edge to the theme with this pair of kitchen utensils.

When we decided To do our kitchen it had to be like professional Baking space, our island bench is 8 foot long and it can handle my workload. it is also equipped with electrical outlets from all sides, great convenience to charge the phones.

Tribute to the kids who left a pair of glasses on the floor of an art museum as a statement regarding the quality of the modern art being offered. People subsequently began to photograph them as if they were an exhibit. Is that life mocking art or vice versa? I actually took this shot a while ago, just because I noticed the light coming through the lenses of my sunglasses, and I thought i'd try my regulars.

Home made from scratch, the last of the Turkey vegetable soup. Mmm.

We took some of the scrap countertops and turned them into cutting boards today. Now I can stop worrying about dinging the countertops, and semi-retire the plastic cutting boards - for free! Nice.

This kitchen is part of a massive remodel and addition to an existing 800 sf house on Nantucket Island, MA. The house is 1 floor 1300 squ feet with a 700 sf basement. Its very open like a loft, making the home feel much bigger than it is. I have produced a cooking show shot in this kitchen that airs on a local channel here, Plum TV. It features local chefs from restaurants & catering companies. The kitchen/home was remodeled on a small budget. I bought most everything online, appliances, flooring, butcherblock counters, sink, etc... The house is also solar powered producing hot water, not electricity. Almost all hot water is made with solar and it also helps heat my house via radiant. I have a water on demand for back up, I am never without hot water. This shot is a year old, there are 2 pendant lights over the island now and some more artwork. There are photos of the total renovation of this kitchen and house by clicking my other sets. Enjoy!

Shot this photo in April 2001 with my very first digi-cam, a twisty-body Nikon 990. As I walked into the studio one morning at 7:30AM, I happened upon the scene with the morning sun blasting through the blinds – and this dramatic sight greeted me. Had to shoot it!

This is image number 4811. (In 2008 on my Flickr photostream, I posted a very similar image [#4813] shot a few seconds after this one. The crop and angle are a little bit different than this one.)

Of course, image processing software from 2008 doesn’t compare with what’s available today. As well, my knowledge of how to use it has improved a lot since then. What’s remained the same is the medium-res quality and artifacts of the old, original 2001 images. I wanted to see what I could do with that old image by applying modern-day PS, ACR and Topaz software, but not spending too much time on it. And I wanted to end up with a square crop.

Week 29/52

Theme "Kitchen Close-Ups"

7/15/23

This is the kitchen in the Bluebird Guesthouse -- a little inn on SE Division St. here in Portland. So happy the original cabinetry remains.

I keep a 1/6 kitchen setup on one of my built in shelves. This is just an island/wine rack that I put together with some pieces from Natalie's French Goods & some other stuff, including the famous Megahouse cheese. This is one of my permanent setups. You can see some other stuff I have there in the background, the espresso maker, bananas, a toaster, a blender, & some dish washing stuff too.

The heart of the kitchen...

We began work on the kitchen remodel on April 18th. The only surface in the entire room that wasn't painted, refinished or replaced was the floor. I'd like to thank the previous owners for installing the awesome cork floors, but that's about all they did we can be grateful for.

My daughter and son-in-law are selling out and moving to Texas from California. I can't blame them one bit, but it's going to be very strange not having them and the grandkids so close.

To get the house ready, I've been doing a bunch of work, fixing stuff up, replacing broken lights, changing out receptacles, etc. I also replaced the kitchen countertops with these butcherblock ones. Cutting them to fit was a bit stressful! And heavy. The one for the sink is 10 feet long.

I put the new sink together, too, but they had a friend install it and the plumbing. My back hurts too much to crawl under there and hook everything up.

My part of that job is done. They will install a new tile backsplach and paint the cabinets before it goes on the market.

Pardon the mess.

Normally there is a bit of mystery or suspense when you come across a closed door in a spooky mansion, but this door left nothing to the imagination.

However we did find some surprises on the shelves to the left in the form of some jars full of eyeballs and doll hands. There was also a jar with a bird's skeleton in a different room.

"There's no space more useless than the emptiness above kitchen cabinets, just under the ceiling—and we had lots of that," says Anne Turner, a former Cottage Living editor who gutted and redesigned the kitchen of her 1940s Birmingham, Alabama home. "The sink was divided and shallow. The microwave hung low and dangerously close to the stove, and none of the appliances matched."

Kitchen walls and upper cabinets are painted Farrow & Ball Lime White. Lower cabinets are Farrow & Ball Mouse's Back. Window sashes and doors are Farrow & Ball Stoney Ground.

Blueberries: Regardless of what the nutritionists say, only a true super fruit can be involved in every meal of the day. Case in point with delicious blueberries:

- Great with your morning cereal, granola or on waffles

- Great as a daytime snack either alone or in yogurt

- Great at night when you have only ice cream for dinner because your wife is out of town

Made this pattern yesterday for fun, but I'm probably going to try and make another colorway or two of it. Any suggestions?

Also any requests for patterns? I think I'm gonna do a victorian house one in the near future!

within an inch of it's life!

Walls washed, cupboards cleaned, counter tops oiled...all ready and waiting for some handcrafted shelves so I can show off my pretties.

I ordered a crispy crust pizza and this is what I got. They made amends and "did me right" to keep me happy. After the smoke settled and a few laughs I had to get a cell phone picture.

Happy Easter, flickr friends! Apologies for the flood.

Making blueberry pancakes. :)

Another colorway for my woodgrain butcher block pattern...

I had no intention of making an image of sausages. This shot was originally supposed to be much different, but the composition wasn't coming together so I changed the concept a bit. This is probably a bit more palatable(but less humorous) than the original idea anyhow.

Another colorway for my woodgrain butcher block pattern...

i have been dreaming for awhile of replacing my dinky little work table with an 11' wall-to-wall command center so that i could actually keep my computers, hard drives, printer and scanner together all on one surface with tabletop space to spare as a cutting surface so that when i make stuff i don't have to hunch over on the floor.

my first major obstacle in having an 11' desk was... finding an 11' desk. which doesn't exist. easily solved, however, by the kitchen section of ikea. the desk is comprised of 4 kitchen cabinet units with a solid wood butcherblock kitchen countertop as its surface. it is about 3 1/2" taller than normal desk height, but i was able to find an adjustable-height chair that rises up to 4" to compensate. vintage library card catalog pulls, drawer pulls and cabinet handles (which are actually coat hooks) were procured from anthropologie in an effort to mitigate the overall "ikea-ness".

yes, i still have to finish painting that wall on the right (realized late on installation day that i'd need to paint at least that one corner otherwise i'd never be able to get into the 4" space between the desk and the wall ever again). i am also looking for wall shelving systems, hardwired ceiling light fixtures, and under-the-desk cable organization/hiding systems if anyone has any suggestions.

majormajor thanks to everyone who helped me out with this:

marty: spent his day off taking me to ikea to buy 95% of the stuff

alexis: drove me to ikea after a long day at work to buy the other 5% of the stuff

chad: took me back ikea again (when i realized i need even more stuff) and home depot in the SAME day! brutal brooklyn home improvement gauntlet!

andy c: who spent an evening putting legs on the cabinet units when i realized i wanted some of them elevated.

andy b: who spent an evening removing said legs when i realized i no longer wanted the cabinet units elevated.

william: who cut custom wooden feet when i realized they needed to be at least somewhat elevated

mike: who measured, cut, sanded, stained, waxed, buffed and installed the top (with more help from andy c and marty).

whew! could not have done it without you guys, thank you so much!

UPDATE see the finished finished version here

Playing with light painting in the kitchen. I had always wondered how people were able to get such great control of light for shots like this, apparently, if you have a flashlight it's pretty easy :) .

The kitchen is now 99.99% finished, after 1 year & 8 months! My husband just installed the crown mldg. above the cabinets this past weekend, I still need to caulk the gaps.

I didn't get a chance to do a walkabout this afternoon, and I haven't played with my external flash in a bit. Our new (old) butcher block table was the perfect backdrop for some experimentation.

I dig it. Some don't. Stop the hatin'.

2006 train depot this year I made it all with gum paste, everything is edible.
