BACKDROP

Excerpt from oakvillehistory.org:
W.F. Romain, a prominent businessman built the “Navy Block” on this corner in 1854. It was an imposing, four-storey building said to be almost identical to that of Gage & Hagaman across Navy St. In 1883, a disastrous fire destroyed much of the business section including the Navy Block and other buildings to the east. Two well-designed, identical buildings were constructed promptly on the site. They are shown above in 1897 when No. 126 was John Barclay’s General Store and No. 132 was the office of the Oakville Star newspaper. Two fraternal organizations were on the second floors, the Masons at No. 126 and the Oddfellows at No. 132. The original external details have not changed except for storefronts and the buildings are among the best-preserved on the street.

This shot made my day. I ended the walk after this and jumped in my plane back home :)

Meine lieben Jungens!
Hier sende ich Euch eine Ansicht von meinem Büro.
Wie gefällt Euch dieselbe?
Nun betrachtet mal meinen recht langen Brief.
Hier gibt’s fast nichts Neues.
Am Sonntag war ich in Bremerhaven
und habe die Europa besichtigt.
Herzliche Grüße von Haus zu Haus

I have been using this plaster cast head of Hermes (the Olympian Hermes, that is) as my photographic punching ball for years. The reason is that he has got endless amounts of patience with me. This shot was done outdoors, using a reflector. I like to shoot wide-open and, with a proper lens, one would get satisfying results. Compare this shot to the other one, number 1, taken with a different lens, though PP was exactly the same (edited in Fuji's raw converter and refined in Luminar). This shot was taken with the 7Artisans manual lens wide-open (F 1.2). This lens will not produce sharp focus wide-open and at close range. And yet it produces images with "character".

RHS Wisley
RHS Wisley was founded by George Ferguson Wilson, a Victorian businessman in 1878, he made it his ambition to make difficult plants thrive in English conditions. So he created The Oakwood Experimental Garden. This was a 60 acre plot in total, of which part became the garden. Unfortunately he died in 1902 and the whole site was purchased by Sir Thomas Hanbury. Sir Thomas also owned the famous ‘Giardini Botanici Hanbury, at Mortola in Italy, close to the French border. He gave both properties to the RHS in and around 1903, just four years before his death in 1907.
The main laboratory for scientific research was opened in 1907 but this building proved to be inadequate so major improvements were made and the exterior was rebuilt during the First World War. In 1985 it was designated a Grade II Listed building.
This garden now covers 240 acres in which are housed a large glasshouse for tropical, temperate and arid climates, formal and informal gardens, an arboretum, Alpine Houses, Rock garden, Pinetum, a Wild garden and a Walled garden plus many more features.
This is another place worth while visiting, especially, if like me, you’re a member of the RHS.
This will be the second posting of 7 images. There are 6 postings in all.
