I was way out in the deep playa one sunrise and I found the 747 art car playing music right by this statue called "Broken But Together."

This photo is about to be on the cover of some magazine. It's not a big magazine and I'm not making any money, but I thought you might like to know how much time it takes to do something for free. The email thread was at least 16 long and required communication between so many parties to make sure everything was copacetic. Me, the sculptor (Michael Benisty), the Burning Man organization, and then the internal team of this magazine. Sometimes I don't even respond to some of these inquiries because I know it will just be a rabbit hole of lost time. Oh well... going for good karma here I suppose.

Here's the giant 747 that made it out to Burning Man this year. It was converted into a huge dance club that would taxi across the playa every night to a different location. I took this just before sunrise. This year, I think I saw about 80% of the sunrises which was a new high for me! On this particular night, the plane had taxied way into the deep playa out near Michael Benisty's work, "Broken Together," a work you might remember from a few posts ago in my Instagram feed. I have a photo of these two together that I am still working on...

Thanks again for coming out to the Burning Man photo walk! That was #10 in a row... what a great crowd. And thanks for coming over to the speakeasy at our camp after the event. The awesome Hugh Howey (at hughhowey on Insta) made all the margaritas. We started the photo walk right here at Big Red... Keith and the crew from our camp was nice enough to give me a ride to the show... so we started the walk by taking a photo of the world's biggest VW bug!

On the final night of the temple burn, about 80,000 people ride their bikes out across the desert at sunset to await the final inferno. It's actually quite the somber night... people leave things in the temple as a symbol of letting things go. 80,000 people, all letting things go together, is quite a transformative experience.

Here's the new art piece entitled "Broken Together" by Michael Benisty. This one was way out in the desert. If I were to walk here from my camp (Camp Walter, which was on the front row at the Esplanade), it could have easily taken almost an hour! Luckily, I have an electric bike so it took less than 10 minutes... I tell ya - electric bikes are a game-changer! It's not twice as efficient - more like 4x-8x as efficient... I get to see a ton more art and I don't exhaust my physical body quite as much. My bike was made by my friend Cliff Baise and it's been awesome over the past five years... but, alas, I think it's the last year for that machine. I had a big "accident" this year when the battery rack (which weighs about 40 pounds!) ripped off the back and went bouncing across the desert. I fixed it up with several bungee cords... but I tell ya... I don't think it could last another day... taking a photo of this art on the final night was probably my bikes final heroic mission!

Today I was with my Burning Man roomie Rene and we were relaxing after going to the Shipwrecked festival together and had the Mayan Warrior channel on the TV. We were watching the 2019 set from Jan Blomqvist and we saw ourselves in the video. We were in the background rolling along in Big Red on the way to the Photowalk. We could barely make ourselves out, mostly because of my bunny ears.

The Mayan Warrior rolls across the desert every night with thousands of lasers... beckoning all of us under its spell. We swarm to it like remora on a shark! Many many nights, Jonatas, Rene, and I are there underneath it's gaze like zombies! I also recently visited the Mayan Warrior for a fundraiser in Brooklyn while I was working on another art project... I'll follow this thing anywhere!

How about another slew of Burning Man pics from this year? Now that I'm back home in New Zealand and getting all my photos organized after 5 months of nonstop travel, I realize I have a bunch of stuff I never shared with you! We can start with this one... a favorite shot from one of my favorite sculptures called "Broken but Together," another genius art piece from my friend Michael Benisty.

Here is "Folly," one of the most awesome art pieces at Burning Man this year, as the Monaco sailed up for a visit. It was one of the first giant works to burn. I would have taken photos of it burning, but my two crazy roommates and I decided to go dance at the Opulent Temple instead. It's hard to explain... I don't take photos ALL the time there, even though I got several thousand over the week. I try to spend 8 hours a day sleeping, 8 hours a day taking photos, and 8 hours a day partying and exploring. It seems like a pretty good balance... I guess!

A massive sandstorm blows into Black Rock City. A lot of people seek shelter around this time, but I ride bravely into the storm with camera in hand! I find them exhilarating!

Here's one of the thousands of pieces of art that are scattered across the desert. They look great during the day, but most of them (not all) look even better at night and sunset. This one had a ton of different colors as it cycled with its LED lights. I zoomed in to get a bit of compression and waited until I liked the color combination with the background.

This Advice Station was right outside our camp on the esplanade. I see it almost every year and only THIS year I figured out that you can go sit on either side to get or give advice. For some reason, I thought that there was just one dude that sat there ALL DAY LONG giving advice. I never noticed that it's just random people that sit there... haha I felt so stupid. In fact, I felt so dumb I didn't think I should go over there and give any advice since it took me so long to figure it out. You can see Big Red from our Camp Walter parked beside it.

Here's one of the amazing buildings out there that stood for a few days before we burned it down... It's called "The Folly." I'm not 100% sure, but I think its from the same group that made the crazy lighthouse from a few years ago. I do almost ZERO research on the art before I go because I like to be surprised. Also, almost all the art is quite anonymous out there... I love that because it makes it more about the art and not about the artist.

This is Laura Kimpton in front of her work "LOVE" this year. I got out to the playa a few days early with a WAP (Work Access Pass). It's a fun time to get out there because you get to see all the art being built. In the last 10 years, I've never seen Laura out by her work, so it was kind of a happenstance meeting! I had met her last year when I had a few pieces at the Artumnal Burning Man auction in San Francisco to raise money for artists like her.

Here's the Monaco in a sand storm. I have a lot of friends in this camp! I still don't have a good photo of it with all its sails unfurled... I keep missing that for some reason. But, there's always next year.

Let's jump from one of my favorite artists at Burning Man to another! Here's The Head Maze by Matthew Schultz and his team. I didn't get to take as many photos of it as I wanted because it was on the opposite side of the playa from me. My bike was not working that well this year, and making the multi-mile round-trip to this piece was really taking its toll! Also, sadly, I never stood in line to go inside and take the whole tour. That's mostly because I'm lazy and I hate standing in line. I'm sure I could have asked Matt to give me a personal tour and not stand in line, but that's an asshole kinda thing to do at Burning Man... so, I didn't even consider asking. #Headmaze #burningman #industwetrust #burningman2019

Here's a closeup of one of the new structures out there, Folly. I almost went to go watch it burn down one night, but I was off on some wild adventure with Rene and Jonatas instead!

Here's "The Head Maze" from Matthew Schultz and The Pier Group. Upon entry, you can walk through all the different parts of the mind... It's a great idea... As many of you know, I'm all into consciousness and this sort of thing. I think this is one of my favorite things about Burning Man - the personal spiritual breakthroughs are quite profound, and you can take this well outside of the playa. Some people just go to party and rave... I do some of that too, but the rest of the time is spent on some spiritual deep dives with my friends who are all on similar paths. I could talk about it forever... don't get me started!

Mariposita, meaning “little butterfly”, represents rebirth – of coming out of a shell, escaping confinement, and breaking through to a more meaningful and enlightening existence or experience. The act of emerging, however, is usually not so simple, and the complexity experienced both within the individual viewer and expressed externally as a communal experience, will become the atmosphere surrounding this piece. A rebirth requires power, curiosity, determination, and support, all characteristics that lead to revival and restoration. Mariposita is meant to inspire awakenings and reawakenings, growth and regrowth, beginnings and ends.

Here's a photo of me! Haha... I usually don't post photos of myself... this was taken by my friend Peter Ruprecht right before the photo walk. I'm standing on Big Red, one of the many cool cars from our camp at Camp Walter! My roommate, Rene Smith, and I got matching suits... we've always wanted matching suits ever since we saw these incredible suits in Venice. We like them so much that we wear them all over the place together... You should see the looks we get when we walk into the Olive Garden together.

Burning Man 2019

One morning I was out cruising the playa looking for subjects to photograph. I had a great morning, and was heading back to my camp to get some breakfast. Thats when I spotted Grace. I asked her if she would be interested in doing an impromptu shot on the playa. Without any noticeable hesitation she agreed. We took a few pics and that’s when I asked her if she would be up for going to a nearby location. She agreed and we were off on our bikes.

This is one of my favorites from that shoot.

Grace is a 9 time burner from San Francisco. She is originally from Orange County Ca. When she goes back to the “default” world, she works in marketing and is also a fitness instructor.

Later that evening we meet up again near “The Man”, and did another photoshoot.

Burning Man is a one week community that meets every year in the Black Rock desert. About 70,000 people attend. People tend to “gift” things to each other, no buying or selling while we are at the burn. No advertising of products, a total “decommodification” of life on the outside.

Larry Harvey the founder put it this way “Communities are not produced by sentiment. They grow out of shared struggle.

Burning Man 2019! I took 5,129 photos (I'll share a few in coming days now that I am leaving...) and here is one of my favorites. It's actually from last night when the temple burned. I always spend Temple Burn night by myself, out in the deep playa, several miles from the rest of the city where there are pieces of art randomly scattered. This piece is by Michael Benisty, who you may remember from last year (he did the two chrome figures hugging entitled "In Every Lifetime I Will Find You." I knew he had a new work out here somewhere... I finally found it late in the week and this one is called "Broken Together." Actually, I wasn't totally by myself. There were two other people here... and it reminds me that I randomly meet some of the most interesting people in the world here. You can see this gentlemen here, who was also out taking photos. He was with his wife. 16 Burning Mans for him (10 for me... a common question amongst burners). Anyway, he used to be a Southern Baptist Preacher. I talked with them for a while... I said, "I assume after a few burns you were no longer a man of the cloth?" He nodded his head and laughed... saying yes...yes...you know... and then we gave one another a hug and went off into the night. #burningman #brokentogether #brokenbuttogether #michaelbenisty #industwetrust #burningman2019
