The two Raccoons that attacked my feeder last Thursday returned again for a daylight burglary next day. This marauder has actually struck this pose to re-think its approach after this one failed. They paused after a couple of failed attempts and then one climbed up the tree holding the feeder and soon the feeder was on the ground.
It was great fun seeing them involved in their hijinks again.

HAPPY FENCE FRIDAY : 0))
Happy Fence Friday to one and all
I am guarded by this hilarious court jester
he is wearing rather a Serious hat
because he's as bald as Uncle Fester
What do you mean you've no idea who that is
Surely you've seen the Addams Family
Well, I know he wasn't made up of old drainpipes
and U-bends with flexibility
but his eyebrows are peeling
his eyes are appealing
because he is left in the sun
he stands at the wayside guarding me well
but if a robber stops by he can't run
so quite what good he is proving to be
I really can't tell you for what
but he's company during the day and night
and he squirts me with water when I am hot
one night the alarm was tripped and went off
it was a burglary in progress
he tried to stop the getaway car
but it drove right through the gap between his legs!
People stop by just to take his photo
but today is all about me
so I wish Poppy had focussed more on ME the FENCE
and not on my friend just 'cos he's funny!!

The end of photographic series in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Were 38 photos of a weekend that I made with my wife, on 16 and 17 April of 2016.
Rio de Janeiro is very beautiful, but still faces many problems with burglaries and drug dealers attacks.
I hope the Government and authorities of Rio de Janeiro are able to make a safe and happy welcome to all who participated in the 2016 Olympic Games.
* I'm grateful for visit, favs and comments of my photo.
Macro Mondays: Treasured
A small collection of presents that are invaluable to me... The garnet heart was given to me from my mum (all the more treasured as it was one of the only survivors from a burglary during which almost all of my jewels, including some I was quite attached to for sentimental reasons, were stolen). The stone and the wooden heart were painted and given to me by the older of my two nieces, who's just turned 10. The flower in the back is the top of a box that was a long-ago Christmas present from my grandmother. We were so very close, and I still miss her a lot.

According to Cornell's allaboutbirds.org, "A few Eurasian Collared-Doves were introduced to the Bahamas in the 1970s. They made their way to Florida by the 1980s and then rapidly colonized most of North America."
"Eurasian Collared-Doves have plump bodies, small heads, and long tails. They’re larger than Mourning Doves but slimmer and longer-tailed than a Rock Pigeon. The wings are broad and slightly rounded. The broad tail is squared off at the tip, rather than pointed like a Mourning Dove’s."
“Eurasian Collared-Doves made their way to North America via the Bahamas, where several birds escaped from a pet shop during a mid-1970s burglary; the shop owner then released the rest of the flock of approximately 50 doves. Others were set free on the island of Guadeloupe when a volcano threatened eruption. From these two sites the birds likely spread to Florida, and now occur over most of North America.”

Lately I’ve been seeing these beautiful doves frequenting the backyard, often in pairs and being very vocal.

About 5 or 6 years ago I would occasionally hear a strange "woo hoo huh" call during spring and summer. Before I ID'ed it, I called it the Homer Simpson bird because of the WOO HOO in its call.

While most birds meet their chicks’ protein needs with insects, doves feed their newly hatched chicks a fat- and protein-rich “crop milk.” This whitish fluid comes from liquid-filled cells that slough off the lining of the crop, a portion of the esophagus. After 5 or 10 days, the chicks switch to a diet of regurgitated seeds or fruit."

In these gloomy days of late October, in these heartbreaking days for the French (the incredible burglary at the Louvre, the Parliament lacking majority, the President clinging to his seat after several electoral defeats, the unconscious political parties tearing each other apart, the abysmal debt, etc.), let's return to a ray of sunshine that can give hope for better days: Belgian humor, with the statues of Geluk on display at the Parc de la Tête d'Or since the beginning of October.
This one is called "Juste retour des choses" (Payback time) with the subtitle "For once, it's a car crushed by a cat." The car has a Belgian license plate beginning with "CKC" (if pronunciated in French, it tones like "c'est cassé", i.e. "it's broken")
The running costs for the Reindeer alone is a fortune.
So it seemed a waste not to use the "breaking and entering" skills throughout the year.
Happy Christmas.
The main difference:-
intent: "Breaking and Entering" is often just the unauthorised entry itself (trespassing with a stronger term), while "Burglary" requires illegally entering a structure with the intent to commit another crime (like theft or assault) inside, making it a much more serious felony. Think of it as: Breaking & Entering = trespassing + entry; Burglary = Breaking & Entering + criminal purpose.
Last time I crossed, the toll was US$7. Toll is collected in the southbound direction only. That is: going from Sausalito to San Francisco. The toll is collected via license plate readers. You receive a bill in the mail unless you have a registered electronic transponder in your car. If you have a transponder, the toll is deducted from your pre-paid account.
The vista point on the north end of the bridge is a good place to view or shoot the San Francisco sunrise. I've heard auto burglaries are a local custom. Don't leave valuables in the car at this lot.
I'm always surprised by the water's shade of green. It seems greener on days when the wind makes a lot of whitecaps. Not sure if it really is.

This is Tofu trying to open the door of the garden box and yes he DID manage to open it without any major problems. It is something he learned from his late brother Fynn years ago. In fact he opens all kinds of doors as well as drawers and boxes unless they are locked. Turning a key is something he doesn't manage (yet). :)
The train doesn’t stop here anymore. A southern looking Greek Revival courthouse sits on the north side of the town square. Lincoln spoke here in October of 1858 when it was still brand new. No one remembers what he said. In the old days they mostly tried cases concerning chicken thieves, public drunkenness, bootlegging, and stuff like that. Now it’s mostly meth and fentanyl possession, domestic violence, and burglary. It’s still a great little town to settle down in. It just ain’t what it used to be.
I went to pick my first ripe strawberry of the season last night and found a mostly eaten berry. The strawberry was well hidden by the leaves, so I don't think this was a bird burglary. I suspect a slimy, slow-moving snail stole my strawberry. Ssssss! HSS
Große Aufregung in Laaber.
Great excitement in Laaber. Normally, the use of a drone tends to arouse curiosity and you get lots of interested questions from passers-by. On the evening of 6 April 2025, however, things were different and I was confronted by a number of angry residents of the Upper Palatinate village. The small aircraft on the retaining wall was eyed very suspiciously. De-escalating conversations with precise explanations of what I was doing and the fact that I could easily be identified as a German citizen eased the situation. To save the neighbours' honour, it should be said that the town of Laaber had recently suffered a series of burglaries, which is why people take a closer look at strangers. I left it at a picture of the 6193 132, which passed the retaining wall with the intermodal train DGS 40656 from Episcopia Bihor to Wanne-Eickel, uniformly loaded with semi-trailers from the freight company LKW Walter.
Waco, Texas
Built in 1901, the McLennan County Courthouse holds pride of place within Waco as not only a functioning center of justice but also the city’s most impressive civic building.
Designed by James Riley Gordon, the renowned architect responsible for the Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie and the Arizona State Capital building, the McLennan County Courthouse has a neoclassical exterior. The courthouse’s pilasters and columns are Corinthian. The courthouse features three justice-themed statues. On top of the central dome stands Themis, the Greek goddess of divine order. In her right hand, Themis holds a double-edged sword that represents the law as the chief instrument of justice. Her left hand holds aloft a pair of scales intended to symbolize the weighing of facts in the balance by the courts. The other two statues are located on the upper roof below the dome. One is Justitia, the Roman goddess of justice, and the other appears to be a classical version of Lady Liberty.
The interior of the courthouse is also ornate. The Tenth Court of Civil Appeals features columns made of Kenesaw marble. Stained-glass art pieces with brilliant blue hues and star designs grace the inside ceiling of the dome.
In addition to its courtrooms, the structure is also the seat of the McLennan County government. As a result, the building is charged with the task of storing the legal records of the entire county. At first there was more than enough room to house paper copies of the records. However, as the population of McLennan County increased in the mid-twentieth century, the existing office space and cabinetry proved insufficient. To create more space, McLennan County renovated much of the courthouse’s interior.
Many notable legal cases have taken place in the courthouse. Clyde Barrow, of Bonnie and Clyde fame, stood trial there in 1930 for numerous criminal charges including burglary and theft. Judge Richard I. Munroe sentenced Barrow to a two-year prison sentence for the above offenses, but Barrow broke out of the McLennan County Jail before he could be transferred to the state jail at Huntsville. Furthermore, the first live televised murder trial took place in the building in December of 1955, when Judge D. W. Bartlett allowed local station KWTX-TV to film the proceedings of the Harry L. Washburn trial in the 54th State District Court.
Couple of Cape Francolins, Pternistis capensis, mating. In reproduction season, it is easy to distinguish females because as you see, the male grab a feather of the female to keep over her in the few seconds of the action, so you can see the females with a feather that is damaged and raised on the back. All this happens after the beautiful dance of the male in front of the couple. The male will look for another female within its territory when the first one is mother, taking care of 6 or 7 kittens.

Many of the stories that accompany the images seen on this site are "Historic Fiction", a few imaginative lines to help set the stage for the image.
This time, the story is based on real events. It was tempting to write this one as historic fiction as well but it seems right to share the unadulterated facts. However, since the story comes from family legend, the facts may have been slightly adulterated over the years.
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow rampaged across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas during a two-year crime spree that became legend. Their activities stretched as far north as Minnesota and west into Colorado. They are believed to have committed 13 murders and an unknown number of burglaries and robberies during that time. Contrary to popular belief, they mostly robbed gas stations and stores, not that many banks. The outlaws were ambushed and killed near Sailes, Louisiana on May 23, 1934.
FYI: The FBI web site says Clyde's middle name was "Champion" not "Chestnut".
Family legend says, sometime during that rampage, the people of Lenepah, Oklahoma got news Bonnie and Clyde were nearby. Members of my family and other townsfolk spent several days on the roofs of the buildings lining Main Street, rifles and shotguns in hand, waiting for the bandits to attack the Cherokee State Bank, run by my great grandfather, J.W. Patchett. The idea may sound crazy but there is a history of people from that part of the country successfully ambushing outlaws. Fourteen miles north of Lenepah is Coffeyville Kansas, best known as the place the Dalton Gang were killed back in October of 1892.
The "What if" possibilities of such an encounter fascinated me as a kid but I always wondered, "How would they have learned Bonnie and Clyde were nearby"? "Were the the bandits ever anywhere near Lenepah during their crime spree"?
A few weeks ago, a possible answer to the first question was provided through social media. The answer to the second question was found while researching Bonnie and Clyde, this morning.
Through a Facebook site about Coffeyville, I had a chance meeting with Barry Swanson. It turns out, he hauled hay for my Grandfather and his brothers back in the day. Grandpa once said of him, "He could haul more hay in a day than three men". Barry knows more about tiny Lenepah than anyone and founded a museum there. Barry provided me with images of the family business back when it was a thriving concern.
During our exchange, I asked if he knew anything of the story about the people of Lenepah trying to ambush Bonnie and Clyde. He had never heard that one but his response may provide the answer to why my kinfolk spent days on the roofs, laying in wait for the pair.
"Only time ... (I)... knew they were near was a story my dad told. He was working in a field on Highway 10 and saw them headed East in the Ford they were shot in later. He said the Ford was easy to recognize. They waved at him and it dawned on him later..."
Was Jack Swanson's sighting the reason the people of Lenepah took to the roofs? There is no way to know for certain but it seems quite possible. While researching this story I learned that on April 6, 1934 they killed a Constable and abducted a Police Chief in Miami, Oklahoma. If you head east on Highway 10 from Lenepah, you will be going to Miami.
Ken and I decided to recreate that moment when pair of notorious outlaws, paused to wave at Jack Swanson on their way to Miami.
It is a moment that plays a part in the legends of two families.

I've always been a dog person - my family have always had dogs. Then I met this fluffball. His name is Rexy, he's a Toyger x Bengal. He's so cheeky and has so much personality.
This was the last photograph I got back from my Diana mini. It was stolen during a burglary. Devastated is an understatement. I had a roll almost fully shot in it.
If you look close. You can see Aaron too ;)

May 29, 2023 - "The Statehouse is situated on a 10 acre parcel of land that was donated by John Kerr, Lyne Starling, John Johnston and Alexander McLaughlin, four prominent landholders in the Franklinton area on the west side of the Scioto River. The initial design was arrived at through a design competition. Construction actively began on July 4, 1839 with the ceremonial laying of the cornerstone. The structure would be completed much later, in 1861. Prison labor from the Ohio Penitentiary was used to construct the foundation and ground floors of the building. Objections from skilled tradesman, who felt they were losing out on good-paying jobs, brought about changes in hiring practices for the remainder of the construction.
Architecture
The Statehouse is built in the Greek Revival style, a type of design based on the buildings of ancient Greece and very popular in the U.S. during the early and mid 1800s. Because ancient Greece is the birthplace of democracy, the style had great meaning in the young American nation. Greek Revival was simple and straightforward and looked nothing at all like the Gothic Revival buildings popular in Europe at the same period. The broad horizontal mass of the building and the even and regular rows of columns resemble such buildings as the Parthenon in Athens. The Ohio Statehouse is a masonry building, consisting largely of Columbus limestone.
The limestone was taken from a quarry on the west banks of the Scioto River. The stone of the Statehouse foundation is more than 18 feet deep. During the course of the Statehouse's construction, 22 years would pass, but it would not be a period of non-stop work. Construction would cease during the harsh winter months, and as the project would exceed its budget, there would often be halts in construction as new funding was arranged. The longest gap in construction came about when the legislation making Columbus the state capitol was due to expire. There was a eight-year lapse in the building of the Statehouse from 1840-1848. The completed basement and foundations were actually filled in with soil and Capitol Square was used as a pasture.
Architects
There would be five principal architects of the building, with contributions from several others. Ultimately, construction of the Ohio Statehouse is credited to the work of a group rather than a single individual. One of the most notable Statehouse architects was Ohio-born Nathan B. Kelley who lived and worked most of his life in Columbus. In contrast to the simple and straightforward exteriors of the building, Kelley used a great deal of ornament and detail on the building's interiors. Kelley took these steps because he felt an important building such as the Statehouse should look and feel imposing and impressive. He was fired because the commissioners overseeing the project felt that these extra flourishes were both too expensive and too lavish for the original design of the building.
It is worth noting, however, that Kelley was responsible for many of the architectural improvements of the Statehouse. It was Kelley who discovered that the Statehouse had been planned without any heating or ventilation system. He corrected this problem by building brick walls inside the building that he referred to as "air sewers" that would function like ductwork in a modern heating system, moving air throughout the building. The system is based on forced ventilation, which pushes air through the building, a common modern concept but ahead of its time in Kelley's day. The system was so efficient that attempts of "renovators" to seal off these ventilation ducts would be largely unsuccessful because the covers eventually blew off.
Historic Landmark
The Statehouse was opened to legislators and the public in 1857 when the House and Senate began meeting in their respective chambers and most of the executive offices were occupied. It was completed in 1861.The Statehouse has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. This honor recognizes the long history of the building and the continued role it will have in the life and lawmaking of the state of Ohio. During the restoration project, original graffiti sketched by some of the Ohio Penitentiary prisoners was uncovered. One sketch is a profile of a man's face with the word "Badger" scrawled above it. By searching records at the Ohio History Connection, the restoration team was able to locate information about Ephraim Badger, who was imprisoned from 1846-1849 for burglary. His record states that he was pardoned in 1849 "for service to the state." Previous text from the Ohio Statehouse website: www.ohiostatehouse.org
M6's Special Agent, 007, reports that Lt. Columbo has made significent leads in the investigation of the unique burglary of the world famous Sherry and Mrbill's Face and Body Salon. Here are the specific notations made by Lt. Columbo:
1/ The burlgary was done by an insider. Valuable computers and other office equipment was left intact, while all files and equipment relative to face and body treatment were taken. Obviously, money was not the motivation.
2/ Mrbill does not seem to have a 19 year old beautiful lover (he has an eye for younger women).
3/ Sherry does not seem to have a 90 year old lover (she seems to prefer older men).
4/ Focus was directed to Agra businesses that would be considered competition to the burglarized salon. These would include the following:
b/ Olga Golanov's "We Can Be Better Than We Are Face and Body Cucumber Center."
c/ Toni Callihan's "Don't Go To The Others, We Are Better" Salon.
d/ Valter Manetta's "Healing Waters of the Venice Canals" Salon.
e/ Christian Heller's "Norwegian Ice Packs for Body and Face" Clinic.
Lt. Columbo also reported that while the list goes on, there was one major clue, but as yet he cannot figure how this clue is relative to the crime. Lt. Columbo found a site on the internet. www.tineye.com where you can go to a site and upload one of your images. IF THAT IMAGE IS ON ANOTHER SITE it will come up in the results report. The site owner admits they are a new software site, but their database is growing daily and they feel very soon they will be an accurate

So the night we were robbed the cops apprehended a car in Rainier Valley full of gang bangers smoking pot. One of them was on parole which gave the police the authority to search him. They found he had Robin’s drivers license and a couple of her credit cards and they booked him in jail. When they looked through his phone they found a video he had accidentally recorded while robbing our house. You can hear several others in our house with him. They were gang bangers and the cops think they rode the bus up to my neighborhood looking for places to rob and they must have seen us leave the house. There was probably a lookout outside the house ready to call in case we came back, and this is why he was holding his phone the whole time. His shoes show in the video for a split second and they are the same shoes he was wearing when arrested. This should hopefully be enough evidence to place him at the scene of the crime. He will be prosecuted soon for residential burglary and possession of stolen property. We haven’t heard any word about his accomplices and we haven’t recovered any of our possessions.
Insurance covered some of the losses but we’re out a couple grand. I’ve spent the last month dealing with the aftermath. Lots and lots of paperwork and other unpleasantries. I’ve been bidding for used gear on ebay and have finally replaced some of my camera equipment. We went up to the Skagit valley on Friday and I was able to take some pictures for the first time since the robbery.
I want to thank everyone for their kind words and generous offers of support. Sorry I haven’t been able to respond to everyone, but I haven’t been on Flickr. I’ve had too much other crap to deal with, and I had to get some gear for an upcoming trip to the Southwest we had booked before we were robbed.
Wow, this is the only picture I've had on Explore all year. I think I was banned there for a while.

His Story :
“Malcolm was a smart, focused student and graduated from junior high at the top of his class. However, when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer was no realistic goal for a nigger, Malcolm lost interest in school and eventually dropped out at the age of fifteen. Learning the ways of the streets, Malcolm became acquainted with hoodlums, thieves, dope peddlers, and pimps. Convicted of burglary at twenty, he remained in prison until the age of twenty-seven. During his prison stay he attempted to educate himself. ”

... with eyes so green, with one swift blow, she can burst your spleen. If you're looking back a few years, she could be an outdoor type who loves dogs and horses, but if you're looking a bit into the future, that's going to be another matter altogether.
This is one of the two female leads in the TV series Terminator, The Sarah Connor Chronicle. She's a robot. I had no idea that after I retired, I'd be come a Science-fiction nut, but if you're of the male persuasion, folks like Sarah Connor will do that to you.
For years, I said, I was saving alcohol for my old age, because I spent my last working years being on twenty-four hour call for crime related emergencies, a bomb scare, a riot, a sexual assault or maybe just a large number of auto burglaries in one short period of time. I had no idea it wouldn't work out that way.
When I retired at age seventy-one, it worked out great for a while and I could enjoy several rum and cokes every night and about once a week do six while watching a movie with a hand over one eye and just feel superfragilisticaly GOOD.
By the time I was kicking eighty in the posterior, it only took one rum and coke and I'd be off to La la Land with the movie still running. Thankfully ...
God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to lead me to alternative vices and that was when I discovered science-fiction.
There are so many reasons I really like the Terminator series. The visuals are masterful and Lena Headey as Sarah Connor is better than any rum and coke I can remember.
I just had a thought about how the future can solve the problem of being ugly. If a Henry Ford will come forward and build affordable male and female robots, then every man and woman on earth can marry their own dream mate and program them to respond to anything, even housework. The species .... ????
.... we could still have sperm banks.
We guys could contribute occasionally and you gals could select the vial with the demographic you wanted and then place the vial in the correct receptacle on your robot and .... there, you have it.
Chicago is a mess. Someone walking down the street in a hoodie may be just another man or woman walking to a legitimate destination. Some armed. Some aren't. Someone walking down the street in a hoodie may have just killed someone, pulled off car burglaries, an armed robbery and could possibly be out there stalking a victim. Cops have a tough time discerning the two. And in an instant even my large camera could be considered a weapon. But to live and work in such fear that one just shoots because in that instant they aren't sure, well that's just not right. Nor is it right to stop and frisk someone just based upon their appearance. This isn't my Chicago. It's Stalin's Chicago.
Dvergsøya is an island in Kristiansand municipality in Agder county, Norway. The 0.27-square-kilometre (67-acre) island lies in the archipelago in the Kristiansandsfjorden to the southeast of the city of Kristiansand. The island is used as a recreational area and it has wharfs for visiting boats as well as toilet facilities. Dvergsøya is only accessible by boat.Dvergsøya is best known as the island where the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Crown Princess Mette-Marit spend their annual summer vacation with their children. However, the island's fairly dramatic history is less known.
Maren was a smallholders wife from Dvergsøya. She was arrested on 20 April 1670 in connection with the sinking of a ship bound for Jutland. There were several people involved in this case, all women. One of Maren's "accomplices" explained in court what should have happened. They had flown through the air down to the ship. There they met the devil, disguised as a priest. It was Maren who ensured that the boat sank. Maren denied the story, and was therefore doomed to undergo torture. Under torture, she confirmed the story and was the last witch in Norway to be sentenced to death and burned at the stake. The sentence was executed on 9 September 1670.
More recently, in the 20th century, two wealthy men named Jebsen and Vogt from Kristiansand built country houses (villas) on Dvergsøya. Jebsen's villa was the scene of an infamous crime. On the night of Easter Sunday in 1933 three men broke into Jebsen's villa and then set fire to it afterwards to hide the traces of the burglary. Afterwards, one of the thieves and arsonists tried to break with the other two. As punishment, they killed him by drowning him in a basin and dump him in the Kristiansandsfjorden.
Today, the ruins of Jebsen’s villa are still visible.
The location of Dvergsøya at the entrance to the city of Kristiansand made the island interesting also in a military context. During World War II the German occupants had an anti-aircraft battery to protect the city of Kristiansand. The battery consisted of six fixed anti-aircraft cannons on the southwestern part of the island. Today, the foundations of the cannons are still visible.
Vogt sold his villa. For many years, it was used as a vacation rental house.[6] Crown Princess Mette-Marit is originally from the nearby city of Kristiansand and her family enjoys spending their summer vacations at Vogt’s villa which they rent. Vogt’s villa is designed by Arnstein Arneberg, the same architect that designed the royal residence at Skaugum. In 2009, a rental contract was signed with the municipality of Kristiansand which owns it. A protection fence in the recreational area caused a political debate, but was built in spite of the protests. wikipedia
Used this in a Seattlest Retake. Go check that out to read about Seattle vs. Mother Nature.
Long analogy. I didn't watch Twin Peaks when it was originally on TV. I watched Fire Walk With Me and then watched the episodes on cassette. So during all of the slow parts of the series, all of the angelic small-town scenes, I was freaked out and often screaming "RUN!"
That's how I feel when I see old photos of 1929. In December, the stock market crashed and ushered in the Great Depression and eventually World War Two. But for 11 heady months, the world enjoyed the peak of one of our greatest - and perhaps most fake - economic bubbles.
Our photo is from March 20, 1929. The Seattle Times of that day is a great case in point. On the front page, one story tells of a couple getting divorced in Chicago. The rich, "December" wife claimed that it was the bathing suit parties at her apartment that were the cause. The "May" husband said she just got angry when he made fun of her plans to buy a limousine, have it painted Persian pink, and add solid gold door handles. The debauchery and decadence seem only enhanced by page after page of alcohol-fueled organized crime stories.
In the old shot, Seattle has the hubris to make a third and final attempt to completely level Denny Hill. They succeeded, creating "the regrade" neighborhood.
Ads in the Seattle Times for W. A. Irwin realtors proclaimed "Down comes Denny hill, up go Realty Values!" It went on to say "Seattle is growing Northward, as are all the larger American cities. In twenty short years the retail center has moved from Yesler Way to Times Square... ever Northward."
Behind me is a parking lot at the northwest corner of 5th and Lenora. In August of 1929 it was sold for $180k to Eugene Gillman. Gillman (or Gilman) bought and sold properties furiously during the regrade time, turning them over in six months for 25% profit. But he tellingly dropped out of the news after the start of the Depression. The Times of August 25th said that he planned a "very fine improvement" for the lot. More than 80 years later, it still sits empty and is still owned by an investment company. The value had only quintupled to a million by 1980, and has quintupled again since. How long will they sit on it as an investment?
This area was killed by the city's attempt to make it valuable. First, landowners were taxed to pay for the regrade based on the increase in land value. Second, properties were leveled with attractive landmarks such as Sacred Heart Church (finally replaced in 1960) and the Denny School destroyed. Third, real estate speculators started exchanging property and jacking up land values. This created a black hole that was not filled in until Paul Allen quietly amassed enough property to personally choose to take action.
Sibbella Court, the lonely brick building, was completed in 1923. For three decades after the stock market crash the only news of this intersection was burglaries, car accidents, and boxing at the Western Athletic Club. Finally the monorail and trees planted for Century 21 turned the neighborhood, but development was still slow coming. The only exception was the simple masonry building next to Sibbella. An engineering firm built it in 1950. Now it's home to Seattle's favorite donuts, Top Pot.
Daytona Beach's top cop is not immune to crime ills plaguing the area.
Burglars made a poor choice Friday night when they ransacked Police Chief Michael Chitwood's home on North Oleander Avenue, stealing his television, stereo, laptop, watch, and other items he said totaling about $500.
The chief came home from a town hall meeting -- he was speaking with Neighborhood Watch members about how they can work with the police department to prevent burglaries -- to find his home plundered.
"I was furious," he said. "People rifle through your belongings and you feel violated."
Chitwood said the burglar or burglars jimmied open the side door of his home and then hauled the stuff out the back, breaking his patio doors. They rifled through his bedroom drawers and left the home in disarray, he said.
Detectives from Chitwood's property crimes division recently bolstered with six detectives and a sergeant whose sole mission is to investigate burglaries, came to the home and dusted for prints.
" I have a lot of confidence," he said, "that they're going to investigate this burglary like any other. They're going to do their best, handling it the same way they would for anyone else."
Chitwood was unfazed by the crime, saying he lives and works in the community.
"Why shouldn't I be affected by the crime?" he asked.
Still, the episode kept him from taking his 12-year-old daughter visiting from Philadelphia to SeaWorld.
"The thing I feel worst about is she's here," he said, "and I wanted her to come down and have a great vacation."
