These include plucking fruit from trees and bushes, probing the flowers of Aloe for nectar, hawking flying insects, hunting for spiders on buildings and picking up fallen fruit.

This beauteous songster is a regular visitor to the backyard. Generally found in pairs or small groups in gardens, orchards and forest edges. These birds have become established north of their natural range in places like Florida, California, and Hawaii.

The red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) is a passerine bird found in Asia. It is a member of the bulbul family. It is a resident frugivore found mainly in tropical Asia. It has been introduced in many tropical areas of the world where populations have established themselves. It feeds on fruits and small insects and they conspicuously perch on trees and their calls are a loud three or four note call. They are very common in hill forests and urban gardens within its range.

For the past few days I had been seeing a new yellow bird in my backyard, never seen before. So I was on the alert and got lucky when one of them landed close on the branch of the jackfruit tree. Was delighted to note that it was the Yellow-browed Bulbul, a gorgeous bird found in the Western Ghats, southern India and Sri Lanka. There are three known sub-species and this particular one is the Acritillas Indica Indica that is found in the Western Ghats in Kerala though they are known to frequent the coastal areas too. This Bulbul lacks a crest and has the upperparts olive-green with a prominent yellow brow and goggle with the underparts being all yellow as seen in the shot.

This photo was taken at the Letaba rest camp in the Kruger National Park. The camp is situated on a sweeping bend of the Letaba River, midway between the southern and northern boundaries of the Park.

In winter the gardens are a riot of color, with several species of Aloe and the Impala lily in full bloom.

The Aloes attract a variety of birds, including the Collard, White-bellied, Marico and Scarlet-chested Sunbirds, Crested Barbet, Black-headed Oriole, Black-eyed Bulbul and Red-winged Starlings.
