Buildup on the intake valves, this at 103,500 km. Issue doesn't exist with engines that aren't direct injection as air/fuel is mixed *before* the intake valves, while direct injection engines, fuel is sprayed under high pressure directly into the cylinder, thus the intake valves never gets cleaned by the detergents in the fuel.
Symptoms: random misfires after a cold start for a couple of minutes but subsides once the engine is completely warmed up, however the odd misfire will still occur from time to time. Enough misfires will lead to a flashing check engine light. Only way to resolve this is to clean the intake valves by hand.

This protein fouling is formed from oat protein. Currently, industry uses harsh chemicals to remove these fouling deposits, which are very harmful to the environment. However, we, as researchers, try to find a novel solution in the form of plasma-activated water to remove the fouling deposits.
Driving through Arizona I noticed quite a few of those white contrails behind airplanes flying over Phoenix. And then I noticed how these contrails tended to follow a similar path. And then I saw how dirty and brown that path had become, over time, like a worn carpet spot in an office corridor. Yuck.
