Lally columns were installed in the wrong places (off plans) and had the wrong sized plates which bent in part due to the unbolted house and the massive mating wall gap
Everything is off-square from the settling of the house due to unbolted boxes and shoddy construction

▏How Strict Building Codes Averted a Larger Disaster
On April 3, Taiwan was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, the strongest one in 25 years. According to the latest reports, nine people have been killed, and at least 900 others have been injured by damaged buildings and landslides on the island. [The seism was centered off the eastern coast of Hualien County, severely damaging buildings, some leaning at severe angles]. Among the most devastating ones, in 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2500 people, damaged over 50,000 buildings, and trapped thousands underneath the wreckage. ▏How Can Cities Create Resilience in the Face of Natural Disasters

Ah, the joys of home ownership! The bricks in our chimney are cracked on the inside of the shaft. All the way down. Apparently, one of the previous owners of the house had some pretty rip-roaring fires in the wood stove!
The cracks cause the chimney to fail to meet building code. So, today a specialist lined it, from stove to top, with stainless steel. It was expensive!
But now, two of our three summer projects are completed. Yesterday, we installed a new back door. No more wind blowing in this winter!
