The 1886 Potter Building. The building was named after wealthy landowner Orlando Bronson Potter (and you thought it was Harry Potter).Check out the second link below for a photo of Mr Potter's other building on Astor Place which I also shot. At around 10pm on January 31,1882 two men from a newspaper company called The Observer were working in the Potter building. The building mainly had offices for newspaper companies and printing firms. While they were working, somewhere in there a fire broke out which was caused by flammable liquids. The two men,one an editor for the company and the other his son, managed to escape by using the stairs and exiting the building.Another man,the architect of the building who also had an office there, climbed out a window and inched past The Observer signboard on the fourth floor to an adjacent building and escaped. Two others, dropped from the signboard and were caught by firefighters below. When the fire was finally put out,12 people were found dead and there was $400,000 in damages. This prompted the millionaire Mr Potter to make an announcement two weeks later that he would rebuild and make NYC's "tallest building"and it would be "absolutely fireproof inside as well as outside",he said. The Potter Building would be the first steeled-framed building to be fireproofed with terra cotta daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2011/05/1886-potter-buildi...</a flic.kr/p/BFGz7c

Thirty years ago, the Reichstag building was wrapped by Christo. The Reichstag was subsequently renovated and remodeled, and the distinctive glass sphere was only erected during this time.

To commemorate the summer fairytale 30 years ago, the wrapping of the Reichstag was recreated with a light show on one side of the building for two weeks in mid-June.

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic University’s iconic Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) Building in Lakeland now ranks as one of the 16 “most breathtaking” buildings in the world, according to a survey of architects, placing it alongside iconic structures such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Empire State Building and Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” residence.

Business Insider’s “Tech Insider” magazine surveyed 16 prominent architects, asking each to pick just one structure they fondly think of as “breathtaking.” Architect Marica McKeel of Studio MM worked on the IST Building design and said, “Not only do I love the design of the Innovation, Science and Technology Building, but I feel a real connection to this project and to the Lakeland community as my father grew up in Lakeland and I still frequently visit family there.”

Designed by internationally-renowned architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava, the IST Building is the cornerstone of Florida Poly’s campus and the University’s main classroom and laboratory building. The 162,000-square-foot, white-domed building is a moveable and functional work of art, with a louvered roof system that adjusts with the sun’s angle, surrounded by a ring of curved metal pergolas that shade its outer terrace and walkways.

Calatrava repeatedly breaks new ground in architecture, with soaring designs for a new transit station at the rebuilt World Trade Center, a spiraling “Turning Torso” skyscraper in Sweden and the Peace Bridge in Calgary. Among the numerous awards associated with the IST Building is the distinguished Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Global Project of the Year award.

The Church is St Mary-in-Castro (explanation below) and next to it is the Roman Lighthouse.

There are records of a church being built 'within the castle' (Latin 'in castra') by Eadbald of Kent in the 630s. However, it is unclear whether this means within the Saxon burgh (usually dated to later than 630) on the Eastern Heights, or within the ruins of old Roman fortifications in the valley. The large, late-Saxon cemetery around the present church does suggest the existence of a c.600 church, but not definitively. Whether or not it had a predecessor, the present Saxon church was built on the Eastern Heights around AD1000. It is immediately adjacent to the surviving eastern pharos, which was used as a source of spolia (spoil): Roman tiles can be still be seen in the church fabric, particularly in the window arches (usually of stone), and flint and tile from the pharos is used throughout the church's walls. The plinth that projects out from beneath the church and on which it stands, however, is of new stone. The church is cruciform with a central tower the same width as the nave but broader than the chancel and transepts. The nave has no aisles. The door arch is the earliest to survive in any standing church in England.

The building next to the Church is possibly the oldest building in England as it is a Roman lighthouse constructed in the 1st Century AD the top stage was reconstructed 1415-1437. Complete with Roman lightning conducter!!!!

The Eurymedon Bridge was a late Roman bridge over the river Eurymedon (modern Köprüçay), near Aspendos in Pamphylia in southern Anatolia. The foundations and several remnants (spolia) of the Roman structure were used by the Seljuqs to build a new bridge in the 13th century, the Köprüpazar Köprüsü, which stands to this day.

Köprüpazar Köprüsü, Roma döneminden kalma, günümüzde Türkiye'de, Aspendos yakınlarında Köprüçay (Eurymedon) nehri üzerinden geçen, 9 kemerli Eurymedon Köprüsü'nün temelleri üzerine Selçuklular tarafından 13. yüzyılda yapılmış, sivri kemerli bir köprüdür. Köprü eski Roma yapısının nehir yatağındaki ayak kalıntılarını takip ettiği için yol güzergahının ortasında belirgin sapmalar görülür. Köprü 259,50 metre uzunluğunda olup, genişliği 9,44 metredir. Sütun kalınlıkları 9,60 metre, kemer açıklığı 23,52 metredir.

Another Detroit rehabilitation success story. The 14-story Neo-Gothic office building in the background of this photo was built in 1925 and had been abandoned for 40 years. During that time, scrappers had taken most parts of value and the city had even erected nets to catch debris from its collapsing facade. Demolition seemed certain.

Despite those challenges, in 2019 the building opened as Element Detroit at the Metropolitan Building, an extended-stay, 110-room hotel redeveloped at a cost of $33 million. Developers the Roxbury Group and Means Group also opened The Monarch Club, a rooftop cocktail lounge and outdoor terrace.

Not only was the Metropolitan Building brought back to life, but the developers did an exceptional job recreating many of its historical elements.

Beyers Cottage was built by the pioneering Polish miner Louis Beyers in the 1850s. Beyers was involved in the famous Holtermann Specimen discovery - the largest gold nugget found at the time. He later became the mayor of Hill End and is renowned for developing the local area.

This working class cottage is a miner’s dwelling relic and a great example of the wattle and daub construction technique. Once you’ve equipped yourself with lots of information, be sure to visit the quartz roasting pits and Valentines mine and imagine how the pioneers fossicked in search of fortune.

One Clearlake Centre, a multi-tenant commercial Class-A office building, is located just outside of the West Palm Beach CBD, Florida. The property is regarded by the local business and real estate communities as one of West Palm Beach's premier suburban office buildings due primarily to its location, size, and tenant mix.

With current ownership's nearly completed aggressive capital improvement program implemented over the last 4 years, One Clearlake Centre's appearance and energy efficiency have been greatly enhanced. Improvements to the building's physical plant include: overhauling the HVAC chiller, installing a variable frequency drive (VFD) on the cooling tower, installing 18 new air handlers with VFDs on the motors, and upgrading the energy management system (EMS) controls. CBRE and ownership strive for energy efficiency while maintaining tenant comfort within their spaces and continue to pursue energy efficiency measures. Lighting controls are utilized in all tenant improvement projects.

Standing high on a narrow headland, Smoky Cape Lighthouse is surrounded by the stunning coastal scenery of Hat Head National Park. The lighthouse itself is as beautiful as the views – check out its winding staircase and octagonal tower.

Built in 1891, this heritage lighthouse is one of the last designed by the Colonial Architect, James Barnet. Smoky Cape headland was so named by Captain Cook after he saw Aboriginal fires burning there in 1770. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available if you would like to find out more.

Smoky Cape is a fantastic spot for whale watching, birdwatching and picnicking, and you can stay overnight at the lighthouse keepers’ cottage.

I love lighthouses and this one at Arakoon on the northern New South Wales coast is no exception. It stands on the top of a hill overlooking the Pacific with fantastic views and not far from the town of South West Rocks. As always, a beautiful place in our wonderful world.

There are keeper cottages fo rent for a holiday providing you have good legs to climb the hill.

Here is the full information about this Lighthouse and facilities from the National Park people. Do not miss it if you are travelling up or down the coast.

You're looking at a model of the HMS Victory at the Chatham Historic Dockyard. This specific model was built for the 1941 film "That Hamilton Woman," starring Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. The real HMS Victory was Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where the British defeated the French and Spanish fleets. The Victory was built between 1759 and 1765 at the Chatham Dockyard. Today, the actual HMS Victory is preserved as a museum ship at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The Victory, First Rate Ship of the Line was launched 7 May 1765. The Victory is Chatham's most famous ship and the ultimate example of a Chatham built ship of the line. The Victory embodies the work of the twenty six trades and the many hundreds of men who built, repaired and refitted her at Chatham during 65 years distinguished service at sea. Her survival at Portsmouth to this day is a testament to the men who built her, those who served on board and her role as a symbol of 18th century national power.

In December 1758, the Admiralty placed an order for five new ships, including '1 of 100 guns at Chatham' - later to be named Victory. Thomas Slade, the Master Shipwright at the Dockyard, started Victory's construction the following summer with the keel being laid on the 23 July 1759. By August 1760 the timber frame was complete and left to season in frame. Victory wouldn't be launched for a further five years, as the requirement for a new First Rate lessened with Britain's victory in the Seven Years War.

Launched on the 7 May 1765 the Victory was placed in ordinary (reserve) and moored on the River Medway, where she remained for thirteen years. During this time she was brought in to dry dock on two occasions to repair her hull. In 1778, when the risk of France and Spain joining the American War of Independence against Britain became a real threat, Victory was fitted for sea and made ready for active service.

Between 1778 and 1797 Victory took part in fleet actions in the English Channel and the Mediterranean. Her presence at key battles underlined Britain's naval strength, projecting power to her enemies. A defining moment in Victory's career was as flagship to Admiral Sir John Jervis at his victory at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797. Although outnumbered, Victory led a British fleet that was better prepared and trained compared to the Spanish.

The Battle of Trafalgar ended Napoleonic France’s ambitions to invade Britain and her Navy’s ability to threaten Britain’s worldwide Command of the Oceans. The end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 ushered in a century of ‘Pax Britannica’ Britain’s undisputed naval power and position as global superpower – and laid the foundations for much of the modern world we know today.

Okay... Tonight I got the plugins that I needed for old software on my new computer & decided to rework this image. This is an HDR replacement with a touch of saturation to make things pop a little bit more. I then used photoshop's distortion tool to straighten out some of the distortion that goes along with wide angle lenses.

And so it was that the sun finally made an appearance today and I had to go to the 94th floor of the John Hancock building. I bought into their Skypass which allows me to bypass long lines. The Skypass is good for 365 days. So I'll be back to do this again I'm sure.

“The IST Building was created to provide an inspiring, modern atmosphere for learning, collaboration and innovation,” said Florida Poly President Dr. Randy K. Avent. “It’s invigorating to walk into this building each day and work alongside faculty, students and staff in one of the world’s most advanced structures.”

The IST Building houses 26 classrooms, the Aula Magna auditorium, faculty and administrative offices, an 11,000-square-foot Commons area and 11 innovation labs – including a 3D printing lab, cyber security lab and heath informatics lab – where students are able to get hands-on experience with the latest technology. Skanska USA was the lead contractor.
