Aphodius contaminatus is a relatively common species of the Scarabaeidae family, commonly known to many as Dung Beetles. I found this on a fence near the river Eye in Melton Mowbray and was the only thing of any real interest that I found today, I did find some Springtails, but nothing new. Saying that it is a Dung Beetle, I think that they are quite fascinating Beetles with an interesting life cycle. I was going to copy and paste some info, but there really is too much to choose from on Wiki, so here is a link instead :-

I think I have the ID correct, please correct me if wrong. I was trying out a new Lumiquest diffuser today, ended up putting a bit of tissue paper inside it, background here is courtesy of a leaf I found nearby :o)

I didn't see a single Dragonfly today, far too cold and grey I guess, we will see what tomorrow brings, more Collembola at a guess LOL :o)

A female Andrena clarkella burrowing down to her nest to deposit pollen, you can see the pollen on her hind legs.

This is another stack taken at a different angle, I actually prefer this angle, you get a better feel for the eyes. Quite happy to finally get details on those pedipalps, I would like to get a decent stack of one without food next time :)

Another shot of what I believe to be Pieris rapae on a blade of grass, I would never have believed just how gorgeous these white butterflies can be, the colours all work together so very well, just beautiful :)

Uncropped image (in a Lepidoptera mood today) :)

Id found with the help of 'Eddie The Bugman'

Photography of the small and very small can get somewhat addictive. Once you feel you have gained a reasonable level of mastery in one area, you are tempted to try your hand at something smaller. This goes on until you cannot actually see your subject with the naked-eye. That's certainly what happened to me.

Chasing tiny globular springtails is occupying a lot of my time at the moment, particularly as numbers of most of my favourite insect subjects, are decreasing. Even with my Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at its maximum magnification of x5, these individuals (many less than 0.5mm), still appear very small.

There's not a lot of reference material available about the "next stage" options for pursuing the "very small" but specialists like Edward Nurcombe ( Eddie The Bugman) and Andy Murray (andybadger) generously share their experiences here on Flickr. Their approach is to attach Extenders and extension tubes to the MP-E lens. This is one of my first attempts at that approach; the lens at full magnification with a Canon 1.4x Extender and a Kenko 36mm extension tube. It's an unwieldy arrangement, very close-focussing and with a field of view of only around 5mm. Results are acceptable (although I need more practice!) and it's necessary to use quite wide apertures to control diffraction. This was at F5.6.

This looks like another Sminthurinus igniceps. These are the predominant globular springtails under fallen leaves in my local churchyard at the moment. I've posted quite a few images of these, but I particularly liked this one the on the surface of the yellow leaf with no "distractions". There are also a few Dicyrtomina ornata around too. They look massive in comparison and fill half the field of view with this setup!

That's not its scientific name, but I haven't been able to ID this one...

I found four of them inside a dried reed stem on the banks of the river. It would have made quite a nice image, all huddled together like that but, of course, as I had disturbed them they decided to go off exploring, each heading in a different direction.

This is the smallest shield bug I have come across and looks to be a full grown adult (it has the classic shield shape) or at least a late instar so I don't imagine they grow much larger than this.

Anyway, if anyone can help identify I would be most grateful. More images in the comments below.

Edit: Looks to be Eysarcoris ventralis or White-Spotted Bug. Eddie The Bugman to the rescue!

8 images @ ~3X magnification

Found a new Collembola today, I think the ID is correct as my good friend JJ had recently uploaded an image of a very similar find. This guy was on the back of a leaf and was less than 1mm in length, really was tiny and very active, a complete nightmare to photograph, I kept losing it in my viewfinder, reckon I needed a bit more magnification for this one :)

I found this beauty on Saturday evening, Erythromma najas, the Red-eyed Damselfly, I think this one is a female. This is an uncropped image :)

This is my Dwarf lord i use in big point games, he is pretty much a a lord hurter as he pretty good in a fight, this is a conversion that is made from some dwarfs i had about and Josef Bugman from Warhammer World.

A new Mite find today under a rotting bit of bark, have not as yet put an ID to this, so any help appreciated. There were quite a few and they were using those long front legs to probe their environment, I love finding new bizarre subjects.

First of December today and felt a bit colder, but still confident I can keep the macro going for the next 2 months, think I'm going to get some gloves, can anyone recommend photography gloves LOL :)

About 4mm long taken at x5 with the MP-E :)

Dicyrtoma fusca pigmentation aberration, thanks to Frans for pointing this out, this is an albino form of Dicyrtoma fusca, I previously thought this might be a pale version of Calvatomina rufescens, nevermind, I am sure I will find one someday :o)

Found some good stuff today and will post a few interesting shots later.

This little one was about 1.5mm long, taken at x5 mag and cropped :o)

At last I get to see a live Bedbug muha ha ha!! However it was dead when photographed. The story; I was out doing my usual thing when I was approached by a young couple. They asked if I was the "Bugman", on my reply being a yes they asked if I could help them ID an infestation they had in their bedroom. The young man then exposed his torso showing so many bites I immediately said Bedbugs. Cutting a long story short I asked them to bring me a live specimen, which they did, a mistake. A mistake as I was not aware of the speed these bugs could move at. After many failed attempts at trying to get a live shot, and few desperate seconds later it was recaptured and put in the freezer. Come the following morning some reasonable shots were made the results are as can be seen.

I hasten to add that my living room and hall way were fumigated immediately after the couple had left.

A superbly camouflaged butterfly found on the hedge. I was fruitlessly working my way through my butterfly ID book, but am very grateful to Eddie the Bugman and Andy2580 for the ID (I'm not sure I would have sussed it from the book... I hope IDing gets easier). Even looking up `Pieris' in my book confused me... until I found that my book lists this as Artogeia.

Part of the crowds watching the King Arthur parade roll by in downtown New Orleans. January 27, 2008.

Well I made a trip to Sheffield Botanical Gardens and I found plenty of exotic Collembola, but this was my favourite. This is a mature individual and is also known as Katianna sp. 3. This one is thought to have been brought in with imported plants and can often be found at Botanical Gardens. This species is very common at Sheffield Botanical Gardens, especially around the Water and Rock Gardens, it seems to favour the Ericaceae that grow there. I found these on virtually every fallen leaf in that area of the gardens. It is also interesting to note that these can also be found in the Hot House, often found on the pools of water in the Bromeliads. It is thought these originate from Australasia. These are about 0.8mm in length.

I have to say that these are one of the most colourful Collembola that I find there, they are walking modern art :o)

A close up of one of the many Weevils about at the moment, I think this is one of those Nettle Weevils, but not 100% sure, but 100% guarantee it is not a Damselfly LOL :)

OK this is quite a different shot, this is an uncropped image, view this large and you can see some of the internal workings of a Damselfly, also check out the wings they are dreamy :)

Ok very excited at finding this beauty, I have no idea of species yet, looks similar to some of the Katianna species, but I'm not 100% on that. About 1mm in length.

I was basically walking about the gardens at Wollaton park and was scrutinising benches, as you do. I came across a white bench and there they were. I think the one in the main image is a female, I also found the male (See comments). Will revisit again and try and sort the flash out, the white gloss on the bench was a problem :0)

This has really made my day and it wasn't the only new find today :0)

I have made all images in the comments viewable, click on image to view :0)

An Azure Damselfly on a Rhododendron bush and yes it was stuck, like many others. This one was released and happily flew off, not sure what the green powder on the head is, could be pollen :)

Dreamy blue shrimp - Neocaridina davidi

This photo was taken the day i added these to my 15L planted aquarium!

These are very cool and not often seen in the hobby yet. they are very easy to care for and breed very quickly. The fact that they like to eat algae has made shrimp a important part of any planted aquarium!

I you would like to know more about the Desktop planted aquarium check out the YouTube playlist i have here - youtu.be/AqaBWJeONLU

It would be so cool to have this as your local.

Ali and Matt on the left.

VOTE FOR ME and I promise equal rights for all Damselflies, free flies for lunch and a pond for every garden :)

I found this female E.najas grounded at Wollaton Park, I decided to try and get her to pose on a stick, far too windy today, it was a nightmare LOL. She's a bit dusty as she was on the path.

Problem was DOF, with this pose, I could either get her eyes in focus or her mouthparts. So I took loads of shots, when I got home I thought I could try a stack, but my Zerene trial had expired, that's when I remembered about CombineZP, so I downloaded the free software and for a first attempt I was quite happy, a bit of ghosting in places. I think I prefer Zerene, but then again this was free :)

Found a rather gorgeous Longhorn today after work, really was a beauty, Longhorn Beetles (Cerambycidae) are a fairly large family of 231 species in Central Europe, 60 of which occur in the UK, they can also be rather colourful and can be quite large :)

Sorry couldn't resist the title, I had a golden opportunity to get some video footage of this wonderful reptile. OK so it is mainly tongue flicks and subtle eye movements, but the coolest part is in the second bit of the video where you can actually hear the Grass Snake tasting the air, I was so thrilled when I heard this, awesome.

This video was captured with the Tamron 180mm Macro on 36mm of extension tubes, I was a good 30cm away from my subject and I fortunately had my SLIK mini tripod, well I always have it in the side pocket of my kit bag, always useful for low to the ground stabilising :o)

Anyway, thought this was fun to see, there were occasional gusts of wind which the microphone didn't like, I do have another clip for later, just nice to see one up close :0)

Oh no not another Damselfly, this is a portrait taken at Wollaton Park, if any other Damselflies are interested I offer reasonable rates and discounts for group shots :)

A Tipula sp or Cranefly, this must be one of my favourites, those eyes rock, I never knew until I started macro, exactly how stunning the compound eye can be, love the metallic greens here :)

This guy was resting on a Willow Tree, quite awkward to get this shot :)

Another shot of a Black Garden Ant enjoying some sweet plant secretions:) This is a completely different shot to the last post LOL :)

A rather happy Sympetrum striolatum on a grey day, thought I'd do an archive shot today, really want to post more Springtails, seriously I have loads of Springie shots.

I kind of miss Common Darters and all my Odonata buddies in general, will be a long wait to see these again, but hopefully I will find new stuff to photograph during the long wait :)

Check out my friend JJ's upload, great minds :)

Dedicated this shot to Eddie The Bugman ( www.flickr.com/photos/odonataman/ ) who very kindly sent me details of the location where these lovely dragons hang out, first time i've captured one so dead chuffed. Click on image to view larger on black. E-M5/45mm macro.

Found a couple of these Forest Bug final instars and managed a 5 image stack, some really stunning colours and textures here, hope you enjoy folks :)
