I found another Snipe Fly on the same fence as the Weevil, this one is Rhagio scolopacea, these guys have the common name the Down-Looker Fly due to their habit of waiting on trees, fences etc with their head pointing downwards, they are waiting for passing prey which they will fly off and catch :)

I found this on my parents garden refuse bin, I believe it to be a Dustywing. It was quite small at about 5mm in length and it is the very first one I have ever found or seen for that matter. I believe they are related to Lacewings as they belong to the order Neuroptera. No real idea on species ID so any help appreciated :o)

Here is some Wiki stuff :-

The dustywings, Coniopterygidae, are a family of Pterygota (winged insects) of the net-winged insect order (Neuroptera). About 460 living species are known. These tiny insects can usually be determined to genus with a hand lens according to their wing venation, but to distinguish species, examination of the genitals by microscope is usually necessary.

In general habitus, the adults are quite unlike other net-winged insects. With their small size - wingspan is between 1.8 and 5 millimetres - and their translucent brownish wings usually covered with the namesake whitish dust of waxy scales, they are at the first glance more similar to whiteflies (Aleyrodidae) which are true bugs and thus among the Pterygota not at all closely related to net-winged insects. A distinguishing feature is that like many other Neuroptera, dustywings carry their wings nearly side-by-side when at rest, whereas whiteflies carry them almost flat across the back. There are no more than two veins across the costal field and few cross-veins in general - unique among the living net-winged insects, dustywings do not actually have the "net-winged" venation. Some Coniopterygidae, like the genus Conwentzia, have only vestigial hindwings; others, like Helicoconis females, are completely wingless.

Dustywings are strongly associated with woody plants, on and around which they usually spend their entire lives. Females depost their eggs singly on bark or leaves. Dustywing larvae are around 3.5 mm long. Their mouthparts consist of short, straight sucking tubes covered by the labrum (upper "lip"). They are crepuscular and dwell on shrubs and trees, where they feed on small invertebrates like scale insects, aphids and mites, as well as on arthropod eggs; the mouth tubes are used for sucking fluids from the prey. There are usually two generations each year.

YUK!

This is a very fat Tachinid fly. The abdomen is dark shiny blue background colour. The thorax is shiny brown background colour. Both abdomen and thorax have a lot of brightly white triangular spots. It has a pair of big red eyes on the orange head. Its antenna is distinctive too, orange with black tips.

Another globular springtail that I found among the frosty leaf litter on Saturday. I think this is a different species from the one I posted yesterday. I have lots to learn about these fascinating tiny hexapods.

Well I made a trip to Sheffield Botanical Gardens and I found plenty of exotic Collembola, but this was my favourite. This is a mature individual and is also known as Katianna sp. 3. This one is thought to have been brought in with imported plants and can often be found at Botanical Gardens. This species is very common at Sheffield Botanical Gardens, especially around the Water and Rock Gardens, it seems to favour the Ericaceae that grow there. I found these on virtually every fallen leaf in that area of the gardens. It is also interesting to note that these can also be found in the Hot House, often found on the pools of water in the Bromeliads. It is thought these originate from Australasia. These are about 0.8mm in length.

I have to say that these are one of the most colourful Collembola that I find there, they are walking modern art :o)

Well I hope the ID is correct, this is possibly my favourite local species of Salticidae, very cute and colourful little critters and they are fairly small. I often find them on the brick work and walls by the side of the local canal.

Sorry for my absence recently, have not been too well over the past few days and was away at the weekend, first day this week I have felt normalish.

I have also made a rather rash change to my kit, I am getting to grips with things and hope a whole new range of challenges are ahead.

I was really happy to find this beauty today, I managed a partial 3 image focus stack on this stunning Pisaura mirablis. I found it basking on the flood defense wall at Attenborough, I found some other interesting things on this wall as well and don't worry there were no more Spiders LOL.

I know Spiders are not to everybodies taste, but I have to say this is one of my favourite UK species next to the Salticidae of course :o)

VIEW ON BLACK AT YOUR PERIL LOL :o)

I found a Capsid Bug on a Thistle and managed to get another flower in the background, I just liked this pose and the purple bokeh :)

Well I went back to the site today and I found a few of the juvenile forms of this species, The main image is a juvenile male and this was really small at less than 1mm, I really like the markings on this one. I also found a juvenile female on the back of a fallen leaf.

This is a relatively new species found so far in Cornwall, Surrey, Shrewsbury and now Nottinghamshire. Yesterdays discovery was the first recording of this species in Nottinghamshire. I think the common link is possibly one type of shrub, the shrub is Skimmia, now I'm no botanist, but I have a feeling that there is a Skimmia bush a few yards from the bench I find these on, I have included a shot of the bench with the bush behind it, can anyone confirm this as Skimmia :0)

The juvenile female in the comments was on a fallen leaf from this bush, the bush fortunately is relatively inaccessible to the public. So far the only classification for these is Katiannidae. Genus nov. species nov. As far as I'm aware it does not as yet have a Latin name :0)

I found this female happily munching on one of those Longhorn Moths, so I thought lets try a stack.

This is a five frame stack using CombineZP, I think as long as I follow basic rules then combine works fine, did have to crop as that antennae was moving all over the shop LOL :)

A new addition to A BugMan's Forest of Dreams.

This is one really awesome fish and i hope that i can get some more of them soon.

This is specifically a wrestling halfbeak - Dermogynus siamensis.

These fish originate from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam

These fish are live bearers. The females have a gestation period of six to eight weeks and will give birth to 10 to 20 live young

These fish are also very calm and docile and shrimp safe within the aquarium.

Be warned they are jumpers so they can jump out if you have a open top tank.

I found this Green-veined White on a blade of grass this morning with it's wings spread, it was not at all bothered by me and allowed me to take a number of extreme close up shots, not sure why it was so sluggish, the sun was up and other Butterflies were very active :)

A Green Shield Bug nymph, I think this is the final instar, there were loads of these all over the place and all of them were at the same stage of development. I hope the sun comes out tomorrow, I was hoping to do Dragonflies at some point :)

Taken yesterday, Flickr has been playing up all day and I thought I'd try an upload as I have only just started receiving contact updates.

I went for a walk today, saw my first Brown Hawkers of 2011, no pics they were too active, I am a bit concerned with the way the plant life is looking, leaves dying on trees, brown and dying vegetation, I think we need rain.

One of the many Barkfly seen on my recent walks, this I think is Ectopsocus petersi and is a 4 image focus stack at x5 magnification, it has also been cropped a bit.

I found this at a new site to me called Harrison's Plantation, this links Martin's Pond to Raleigh Pond and is located in Wollaton, plenty of interesting finds and some new Springtails for the list :o)

You never know what you might find picking up fallen leaves. I found this little cutey, a gorgeous Leafhopper nymph. really lovely colours at play here, I especially love the red bands on the abdomen, how funky. Combined with the golden hues of the fallen leaf, a lovely warm image on a cold cold day :) If anyone can ID this little fella I would be grateful :)

Have a great week everybody :)

Possible ID's Euscelini or possibly Euscelis. Thanks to J.J. Kent :)

This is obviously my favourite Mandarin Drake, well it's the only one I ever see, this was a bit of an experiment today. I decided to try my extension tubes on my 400mm F/5.6 lens, why you ask?

Well I'm hoping the closer focusing distance will enable me to photograph Butterflies and Dragonflies at a reasonable distance, I'm quite impressed with the results and the level of detail obtained. So a successful trial and light conditions were not favourable today. Very grey and very very windy, hoped to try it on a Butterfly, but did not see one :o(

Aphodius contaminatus is a relatively common species of the Scarabaeidae family, commonly known to many as Dung Beetles. I found this on a fence near the river Eye in Melton Mowbray and was the only thing of any real interest that I found today, I did find some Springtails, but nothing new. Saying that it is a Dung Beetle, I think that they are quite fascinating Beetles with an interesting life cycle. I was going to copy and paste some info, but there really is too much to choose from on Wiki, so here is a link instead :-

I think I have the ID correct, please correct me if wrong. I was trying out a new Lumiquest diffuser today, ended up putting a bit of tissue paper inside it, background here is courtesy of a leaf I found nearby :o)

I didn't see a single Dragonfly today, far too cold and grey I guess, we will see what tomorrow brings, more Collembola at a guess LOL :o)

A female Andrena clarkella burrowing down to her nest to deposit pollen, you can see the pollen on her hind legs.

This is another stack taken at a different angle, I actually prefer this angle, you get a better feel for the eyes. Quite happy to finally get details on those pedipalps, I would like to get a decent stack of one without food next time :)

Photography of the small and very small can get somewhat addictive. Once you feel you have gained a reasonable level of mastery in one area, you are tempted to try your hand at something smaller. This goes on until you cannot actually see your subject with the naked-eye. That's certainly what happened to me.

Chasing tiny globular springtails is occupying a lot of my time at the moment, particularly as numbers of most of my favourite insect subjects, are decreasing. Even with my Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at its maximum magnification of x5, these individuals (many less than 0.5mm), still appear very small.

There's not a lot of reference material available about the "next stage" options for pursuing the "very small" but specialists like Edward Nurcombe ( Eddie The Bugman) and Andy Murray (andybadger) generously share their experiences here on Flickr. Their approach is to attach Extenders and extension tubes to the MP-E lens. This is one of my first attempts at that approach; the lens at full magnification with a Canon 1.4x Extender and a Kenko 36mm extension tube. It's an unwieldy arrangement, very close-focussing and with a field of view of only around 5mm. Results are acceptable (although I need more practice!) and it's necessary to use quite wide apertures to control diffraction. This was at F5.6.

This looks like another Sminthurinus igniceps. These are the predominant globular springtails under fallen leaves in my local churchyard at the moment. I've posted quite a few images of these, but I particularly liked this one the on the surface of the yellow leaf with no "distractions". There are also a few Dicyrtomina ornata around too. They look massive in comparison and fill half the field of view with this setup!

That's not its scientific name, but I haven't been able to ID this one...

I found four of them inside a dried reed stem on the banks of the river. It would have made quite a nice image, all huddled together like that but, of course, as I had disturbed them they decided to go off exploring, each heading in a different direction.

This is the smallest shield bug I have come across and looks to be a full grown adult (it has the classic shield shape) or at least a late instar so I don't imagine they grow much larger than this.

Anyway, if anyone can help identify I would be most grateful. More images in the comments below.

Edit: Looks to be Eysarcoris ventralis or White-Spotted Bug. Eddie The Bugman to the rescue!

8 images @ ~3X magnification

Found a new Collembola today, I think the ID is correct as my good friend JJ had recently uploaded an image of a very similar find. This guy was on the back of a leaf and was less than 1mm in length, really was tiny and very active, a complete nightmare to photograph, I kept losing it in my viewfinder, reckon I needed a bit more magnification for this one :)

I found this beauty on Saturday evening, Erythromma najas, the Red-eyed Damselfly, I think this one is a female. This is an uncropped image :)

A new Mite find today under a rotting bit of bark, have not as yet put an ID to this, so any help appreciated. There were quite a few and they were using those long front legs to probe their environment, I love finding new bizarre subjects.

First of December today and felt a bit colder, but still confident I can keep the macro going for the next 2 months, think I'm going to get some gloves, can anyone recommend photography gloves LOL :)

At last I get to see a live Bedbug muha ha ha!! However it was dead when photographed. The story; I was out doing my usual thing when I was approached by a young couple. They asked if I was the "Bugman", on my reply being a yes they asked if I could help them ID an infestation they had in their bedroom. The young man then exposed his torso showing so many bites I immediately said Bedbugs. Cutting a long story short I asked them to bring me a live specimen, which they did, a mistake. A mistake as I was not aware of the speed these bugs could move at. After many failed attempts at trying to get a live shot, and few desperate seconds later it was recaptured and put in the freezer. Come the following morning some reasonable shots were made the results are as can be seen.

I hasten to add that my living room and hall way were fumigated immediately after the couple had left.

A superbly camouflaged butterfly found on the hedge. I was fruitlessly working my way through my butterfly ID book, but am very grateful to Eddie the Bugman and Andy2580 for the ID (I'm not sure I would have sussed it from the book... I hope IDing gets easier). Even looking up `Pieris' in my book confused me... until I found that my book lists this as Artogeia.

Part of the crowds watching the King Arthur parade roll by in downtown New Orleans. January 27, 2008.
