Let's face the facts; your flesh is going to be eaten by bugs when you go hiking in the Olympic National Park. This is a picture of my bad mosquito bites collection two days into a five day hike in the park. Here are a few tips to help you cope with the mosquitoes.

1.Consider the hundreds of mosquito bites over your arms, leg, face, and neck the price of admission. You will never win the fight against them completely. A positive attitude goes a long way.

2.Whatever you do, do not ever scratch mosquito bites, not even once! Scratching the bites causes cortisol to be released which increases the itching and inflammation.

3.Forget about "natural repellents" nothing works except for DEET. Nothing. Scientifically they have all been disproved. Yes, DEET melts some plastics (maybe even your sleeping bag) and is toxic but you might as well throw your money away if you think citronella, skin so soft, raw garlic, etc. will make a difference. They wont and even DEET isn't 100% effective.

4.Get a head net that goes over a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeve shirt, pants and gloves. That is the only way you are going to enjoy yourself. Carry a tiny bottle of 100% deet and apply one drop at a time. Careful at night, that stuff can and will melt nylon sleeping bags!

5.If you (or your partner) does give into temptation and start itching the bites then you will wish you brought along some hydrocortisone or equivalent anti-inflamatory topical treatment. Personally, I go to the dermatologist and get the stuff that is so strong you aren't supposed to use it for more than a few days at a time for risk of nasty side effects. It is called Aclovate®. Dabbing a spot of that cream wherever you see red gives relief within a minute or two. Heavenly lovely priceless temporary relief.

6.The bloodsuckers are attracted to movement so all your flailing around will only make matters worse.

7.Try to camp in an area where there might be a breeze.

8.Winter camping rocks, take it up if you don't fancy being a blood donor

9.I just picked up the Buzz Off brand clothing and will report back here on its effectiveness.

10A bandanna is priceless for continuously beating them off you while you stop for a break. Yes, the movement attracts them but if you are in a swarm and want to stop for a break this is the only way to keep from being eaten alive. The bandanna is also indispensable when filtering water- get your hiking buddy to beat yourself and themselves while you sit defenseless for 5 minutes pumping a few liters of water.

11Learn to accept them with humor. If you begin to despise the mosquito you will go mad and your trip will end early.

The concept is to be "enslaved by freedom". Wings don't always set you free.

I'm happy with how this turned out. Thanks to Sydney for modeling and Chloe for helping with the scarf :)

hopefully I will have more images like this out soon from my other shoots, If anything I have the bugbites to show for them, ha.

the title is kind of random but it's from the song home by edward sharpe & the magnetic zeros which has been stuck in my head all day. and i love that song.

My goal in life is to survive. Everything else is just a bonus.

My first shot ever with my new macro Lens. The IS really helps a lot with handheld shots like this, but the tripod is always essential.

Why the title? Well, we got bugs eating these young leaves when they come out. As you can see those black parts, those are bug bites .. and we can’t do anything about it. This plant is in our garden.

The flies and bugs were biting and this adult wolf was scratching at his bites....and it obviously felt so good!!!

Haliburton Forest, Haliburton, Ontario

This poor kid has such a bug phobia. She just can not hold it together around stink bugs or spiders. She's crazy allergic to mosquitos and develops these huge baseball sized welts wherever she's bitten. After several weeks of camp, creek walking, she is covered in massive itching welts. This evening a gnat flew in her ear and she fell to the ground, covered her head with her arms and just sobbed "I just can't do it anymore. I hate them so much. I just hate them! WHY DO THEY LOVE ME SO MUCH?"

Noah fought a spider and the spider temporarily won. :(

As you can see, Noah has a swollen bottom lip. The swelling has gone down some since getting a steroid injection from the Vet Thursday.

The ride to the Vet was absolutely awful!! He howled the whole way (it's about a 20 minute ride... which felt like 3 days!!). He was like a trapped lion and kept pushing his face into the bars on the door (I did have a towel covering all "windows" and door of the carrier which didn't really calm him down). I was pretty worried that he was going to injure his lip even more. I'm wondering if we should have taken Elijah with us just for support for Noah. The last time we took them to the Vet they were together in the carrier and Noah slept the whole way. I am soooo glad that Thursday is over!!

This picture is for the group Happy Caturday and this week the theme is "Whiskers".

I haven't been on Flickr for some time now due to hand/arm pain (RSD) and more recently due to the problems with the Flickr update. I apologize for being so far behind with everyone. I really have missed seeing all of your pictures and I promise that I will catch up.

The day had gone from average to completely overcast and dull. I had hoped to shoot Mt Rainier wildflowers with dramatic skies because promising thunderstorms were in the forecast. I decided to call it an early night and drive to Chinook Pass where I planned to camp.

On the way, a tiny little hole opened up in the sky and I decided it might be worthwhile to stop at this spot. Before long the clouds started tearing apart to reveal glorious sunbeams. The sun was tucked away above the clouds for quite some time until it finally made an appearance.

About that same time the wind completely died out and offered a perfect reflection of this magnificent place. I wasn't sure it was possible or if the flare would be so horrible the image would be completely unusable but the double sunstar came out beautifully!

NOW- the only thing standing in my way of capturing this amazing moment was millions of mosquitoes. I was wearing plenty of bug blocker but the little ninjas are incredibly persistent and even bit through my clothes. My poor wife had bites all over her back from that night and she was wearing two shirts. Neither one of us could complain having witnessed this incredible view.

i got SO many bugbites shooting this, and those itchy grass plant things did not help at all. i literally drenched my arms and legs in calamine lotion asap.

Day 337 - chasing clouds

The whole day there were all those big fluffy couds in the sky, so I basicly considered my picture for the day pretty much done. By the time I got home though, almost all of them were gone and I could only see one or two left in the distance. So I got into my car and drove out to the nearest empty space, but as I arrived nothing really lined up the way I wanted it to any more. So consider this one more of a second choice image... but I think all the bugbites I got this evening were worth it.

PS: I just realised that yesterdays picture is missing some separation between subject and background, at least on the screen I am working on right now, so I'll be posting that when I get back home.

i really want to be done with school. +a couple in comments.

He woke up by the gnawing bedbugs before the squall of the lacy rooster, yes even dignitaries like himself were plagued by these bloodsuckers in this day and time…

But today no bugbite could get him down, today was the day, after all those years of faithful service for kings and queens, today he would leave to the world of commons and he would be knighted and enter into the class he deserved…

He collected whatever bugs he could find in bed and threw them into the burning hearth…

Every single mini vampire made a small spark and a popping sound when they were combusted in this furnace of hellfire…

He thought of it as somewhat symbolic, or something, he rang the bell and his manservant and two of his maids appeared like they were summoned by a wizard. They greeted him good morning and all the usual, as he paid them to do…

Paid, yes, his wage was far too meager for someone who had such great responsibilities, during King Henry’s father he was the right hand to the King, during King Henry’s reign he did practically all a king's daily choirs except for the eating, jousting and played around with the gold in the state’s treasury chests, well he had to count every coin and gold-bars since Henry couldn’t count numbers higher than he had fingers, such an imbecile, a royal imbecile!!!

Then he served Emperor Franz, well, for him imbecile is not even the right, it was as much chaos as when the lord Orangeen ruled the Black Falcons… then now we have the Queen, she has a great mind, I mean despite the fact that she belongs to the fair sex… actually my work under her is quite pleasant, but still I need to do the most boring and grinding state business…

…anyhow his morning oatmeal-slush was dull as always his morning ale tasted as fad as always, but despite this, today he got this so called breakfast down, even without complaining about the chef and lamenting the money he had to pay this humbug that would have been more fitting a work at an harbor inn that not even that kraut prince consort would visit even at one of his worst binge-benders of drunkenness…

But today none of this mattered, because when he was knighted he would also be gifted a small feudal thief and with that taxing rights and by that a slightly higher income…

Now he was in the palace kneeling on the marble floor, all the queen's knights, henchmen, man-at-arms, sell-swords and brass were gathered in the throne room, all were standing in lines chatting, but one hornblow and the lines straightened a the buzzing hum of words stopped…

Queen Esmeralda entered the room clad in royal dress but adorning her warriors helmet, with her was the golden Sword passed in her family for generations…

Now it was gonna happen, all those years of faithful work as a civil servant would pay off…

…and then it happened, not quite as he had expected, well for a starter all went by procedure, she was about to say: I hereby knight you… well she actually said those words, but stopped…

…because a bleeding man-at-arms from the lookout tower entered the throneroom… he screamed at the top of his lungs: We are under attack, the Slavic-Nordic alliance is at our gates, then he fainted…

Now all the sudden every soldier and knight were running about, the queen stopped the knighting ceremony and started screaming orders while she shed her dress to put on armor…

…on the floor still kneeling, I was whispering to myself: sixty seconds more, dear god, mighty devil, I would just ask for a few seconds… I would give my soul!!! Then I think my “stiff upper lip” broke for a moment, it didn’t matter since none of the queen’s soldiers saw me any longer, all buzzing around like a beehive!!!

I know these sieges can last for months and even years, no knighting will happen during this, well unless someone proves their valorousness on the battlefield, but I am not a warrior… I am just a civil servant, I can hardly cut meat with a knife, much less lift a sword…

But I know, that the siege will end some day, and hopefully then I can call myself noble as I more than anyone deserve, my day will come!!!

No matter the cost or sacrifice, and hey! don’t get in my way, because even though I am not a warrior, this wasp is not without a stinger, I strike from the shadows when you are not prepared

idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.

-genial words of john lubbock

Just a random street in my hometown.

I drove around looking for my picture of the day and came across this street right behind where I live.

It astonishes me how amazing some of the elements that exist around my hometown are. It shocks me even more that I never bothered to check them out growing up.

I think I lived in a bubble when I was a young kid and a teenager. Never bothering to explore anything around me except my fucking bedroom or my friend’s houses. I never looked around and never gave a shit about anything that existed around me.

Being into photography has given me a reason to wander and explore. When I first got home last week the first thing I wanted to do was travel around and go to New York City and Maryland and check out the Chesapeake Bay and hit up Philadelphia and all these other cool places. Unfortunately I was mostly unable to do this because I don’t have a car, and I really *should* be spending it with my family.

So I choose to rediscover the place the existed around me. This fucking beautiful countryside street is like 3 minutes from my house. I thought it really spoke of the town I grew up in. It is rural, quiet, open. It's surrounded by woods, and had a sign that said “Free Manure” that I really should have taken a picture of but didn’t. It’s surrounded by masses amount of mosquitoes, bugs, deer, lightning bugs, and other desired and undesired facets of nature.

So Erma, New Jersey, this is my tiny tribute to you!

Secret 28? I have a bajillion bugbites from visiting this place, but it was totally worth it. It's so peaceful here.

No. 33 The Guardians

I woke up after a rather poor night’s sleep. My girlfriend was covered in bugbites. The crappy beds on the converted oil exploration rig clearly had space for improvement.

It was another beautiful tropical morning. I could hear the hussle and bussle on Mabul Island and as my sleepy eyes looked over the ocean, I noticed a warship not too far away. It must have been the Malaysian navy. A helicopter flew over. What was going on? Wasn’t this supposed to be a tranquil diver’s paradise?

Today we would dive the shores of the famous ‘Pulau Sipadan’. This was what we came for.

On the speedboat towards the island, one of the staff was proud to brag about the massive twin engines powering the little craft. “We used to be the fastest around here!”

“Used to be?” I wondered. “Yeah, even faster than most of the smugglers.” “Smugglers?” I felt like the kid that didn’t do his homework. “Yeah! But nowadays the police has bigger engines. Like us!” The man smiled.

I never quite understood why staying on Sipadan Island was not an option anymore. Such a beautiful place in a bright blue sea, filled with wildlife. It just sounded idyllic.

We had to pay a fee to dive Sipadan National Underwater Park and sign in on the island. There were no other tourists around but I noticed some men working around what looked like a local hotel. These men were military. They were digging and shovelling and repairing fences.

Then we were told what was going on here. Eight years ago, in 2000, a group of Abu Sayaf islamist terrorists kidnapped 21 people from the island. One of the victims was a close friend of our divemaster. We understood that the thugs were friends with Libyan dictator Gaddafi who paid the kidnappers for their acts of terror. The hotel had been closed since and these soldiers had made camp here. Stationed in paradise, these guys kept us safe from harm.

Other leg was the same. Any moron, except me of course, would know to bring bug spray to a tropical jungle. Or wear long pants, which I don't have.

if the colors look out of whack it's because i have no clue how to properly calibrate a crappy monitor.

showing his mystery bite/wound. I assume it eventually healed, I haven't seen Brandon in years. Of course, he may be a pod person by now.

Brown Widow incursion in Southern California has resulted in a rise in this non-native species around the LA County Area.

Today I was sitting in the chair in the basement. I was on msn talking to my friends when all of the sudden, the internet went out. Happens sometimes, so I went to the router through the computer and reset it. Still didnt work.

"Okay," I thought. Ill go reset it. Reseting it consists of going in the garage and unplugging the adapter from the wall so it restarts. It still wouldnt start so I angrily went back in the basement and listen to some screamo blaring until I went to sleep.

In a chair. With music at the threshold of pain kind of hertz.

I had some weird dreams I must say. Lol. I dreamed a friend walked down the stairs with a guitar and I told them to go away cause I was sleeping and they sat down on my couch and started playing. After they started to smirk, I bolted up (in the dream) and was like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? MY MOM'S GONNA KILL ME!"

I have a bugbite, and I dreamed it turned into this HORRIBLE rash thing and it like covered me and I was standing in a rainy parking lot looking for my other flip flop or something avioding a cart that was rolling all over, and there were these two girls from my school selling something at a little kiosk, and I was running around the edges of the parking lot....

It was weird. To say the least.

Ugh. No more falling asleep to screamo.

Leah’s backyard bug bite balm recipe.

This herbal infusion has worked wonders for us to quickly relieve itchy bug bites or stings and it’s all-natural! There’s a good chance the ingredients for this recipe are already in your backyard and kitchen, too.

Recipe:

1 cup dried and finely chopped broadleaf plantain leaves (magic anti-itch ingredient, astringent, anti inflammatory, promotes skin cell healing)

3 tbsp dried oregano ( numbing agent, anti microbial, anti bacterial, anti inflammatory)

2 tbsp cayenne powder (pain reliever, closes wounds)

1 tbsp turmeric powder ( anti inflammatory, antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral, mild anesthetic)

1 tbsp dried rosemary ( anti bacterial, mild pain reliever/numbing agent)

1 tbsp dried basil (anti bacterial/anti inflammatory)

Coconut oil (Or olive oil or other carrier oil)

Optional: beeswax for making a salve.

Melt enough carrier oil in a pot to just cover the herbs. Keep on very low heat for at least 2-4 hours. Stir every so often. Once cool enough, strain oil through cheesecloth or coffee filter to remove herbs. Oil will take on the color, smell, and properties of the herbs. Repeat process with a new batch of dried plantain and the same oil to make it more potent, if need be. If adding beeswax, return oil to pot and melt in wax to achieve desired hardness. Keep infused oils refrigerated or in a cool dark place. Salves can be more portable. Salves and infused oils are usually good for about a year.
