This trip was doomed from the start. Pouring rain, and no intel regarding how far we’d get in a 2WD. Despite those warning signs Eric and Kim joined me for a trek into the unknown, to a place with a foreboding name.
The drive most of the way was wet, and muddy but mostly without incident save for a few logging trucks. However, about 4km from the trailhead we hit a rock obstacle and worked our way over, only to hit trees making further driving impossible. We got out and hoofed it.
The trailhead was almost impossible to find,.. but once we did and got past the first 200m, it became a decent trail, though steep and muddy,... and buggy. We climbed and climbed through what looked like moss and old growth and for some reason Kim got most of the bugs. We never did reach the lake due to the extra 4km each way and impact to our turn around time, we made it about 60% of the way up the actual trail. I’ve rarely been so soaked through my boots.
The unfortunate kicker is that this is one of my goal hikes to complete the 103 hikes book,... so I have to go back,.. when I do I’ll probably aim for better weather and bring a mountain bike.

Mystery Fuzz Bug. What the heck is this thang?? Finally found out today 6-23-2015! A friend showed it on Facebook! "puss caterpillar," or Megalopyge opercularis
It's a fat, furry caterpillar that is popping up in trees across Florida, and it's known as the "puss caterpillar," or Megalopyge opercularis.
But whatever you do, do not touch this bug. Stay away from it, scientists say.
Its fur is actually covered in venom. Doctors from the University of Florida say the second you touch this caterpillar you feel instant, intense pain.
The pain is worse than a bee, jellyfish, or scorpion, and it can also cause vomiting and convulsions.
Doctors say be aware of them while working outdoors because they are known to fall out of trees.

This is a bug jar quilt that was popular several years ago. I started one with denim around the jars and sadly have never finished it. My daughter actually began referring to it as that quilt that will never be finished. Getting seams to come together using denim is a pain.

My girlfriend and I drove around the coast of Maine for a little while. During our little excursion I was able to take a few photos.

This is our all time great birthday party, my sons 7th. The theme was bugs. The party included bug mask making, bug cake, wall bugs, and best of all, bug blood drinks!

Milkweed bugs are usually found in small groups on milkweed plants, often on the underside of the leaves. The bugs feed on seeds and tissue of the milkweed plants.
Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera (true bugs), comprising twenty-one genera. The family includes insects commonly known as chinch bugs, milkweed bugs, and also some of those known as seed bugs.

I don't know what this is but it looks pretty darn creepy to me. Is it a shell or a corpse? Some kind of Grasshopper?
;Crunchy Bug ; is what we call them,because they're so hard to kill.Even when you step on them it takes a few stomps to make sure its dead and you can't just swat it with a fly swatter.

We r rolling from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa across the everglades and up the Gulf Coast......... the day in Fort Lauderdale was perfect........ the night drive not so much...... pretty grim in fact ..... as its all foggy across the swamps and now along the coastal road...... its gone midnight....... this fog is slowing us down big time......... even the Beast car cannot speed us through all this...........
America sometimes amazes me with all this drastic weather and differing landscape and experience......... snow storms up in Rochester yesterday ....... today sun, sea and sand in Fort Lauderdale........ tonight humidity swamps and thick fog ........ I've been hanging out in the States for nearly a decade but it still amazes me sometimes.
Matt told me today he had been here in the US for 10 years and one day....... I'm not that precise in fact as you know Im pretty vague........ hehehe.......but I have been zapping about over here for more than nine years amazingly....... and incredibly it all still seems new and interesting....... this fog......hundreds of miles of fog...... is a new one on me........ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-)))))

PS.......... We are in Tampa now....... This Beastie above at the gas station was unafraid of the red Beast....... it was even having a go at me............. talking of new and interesting I think this Roach thingy at approx 4 inches long was the biggest bug I have ever seen...... enough to totally creep me out when it rushed towards me......... agggghhhhhhhhh ........... anyway its crazily late again now gotta kip :-/
