Hard to imagine "Buffalo Bill" or "Buffalo, New York" being called "American Bison Bill" or "American Bison, New York", but that is the proper name for the animals in this picture: American Bison (Bison bison).

According to the National Park Service ( nps.gov ), millions of bison once roamed from the Alaskan forests to the grasslands of Mexico, from Nevada eastward to the Appalachian Mountains. By the late 1800s there were only a few hundred left, hunted nearly to extinction, their lands "tamed" by European settlers. As of 2015, about 10000 bison were protected in public lands.

This picture was taken in Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR, home to a free-roaming herd of about 100 bison.

Hint: This grouping was separated from the herd. Their eyes are closed and their tails are down, trying to relax in the blazing sun and high temperatures. If they open their eyes, and their tails are straight up, you could be in trouble!

Given its unpredictable temper, the African buffalo is particularly difficult to tame and has never been domesticated like its relative, the Asian water buffalo. Additionally, these animals are considered to be extremely dangerous. They fiercely protect themselves and each other against predators and are known to move in to support another buffalo that is under attack by a lion or other predator. They are very courageous animals.

When the trailing Norfolk Southern power developed issues at East Binghamton Yard in Conklin, New York this Canadian Pacific SD40-2 was added to the point. My friend Jon Kayes tipped us off, so Keith Latimer and I headed towards Sunbury, Pennsylvania on this nice, sunny day. Before catching 11R here at the 273 signals in Dalmatia, we followed NS local H3W south to Herndon with Conrail-painted GP38-2 5259 leading. Position light signals, standard cab EMDs and a variety of scenery made the Buffalo Line my favorite place when I lived in the Keystone State. Plus, it was a spirited chase! Afterwards, we celebrated my (belated) birthday at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, what a great day it was.

This airmail beacon had an acetylene powered flashing light that helped pilots keep on course. It was built in the mid-1920's and operated until early 1930's.

The beacon is on the part of Buffalo Valley called "alkali lake" (USGS 7.5' topo "Buffalo Springs NE"). Except for the missing light, it looks like it could still be used.

Buffalo City Hall is the seat for municipal government in the City of Buffalo, New York. Located at 65 Niagara Square, the 32-story Art Deco skyscraper was completed in 1931 by Dietel, Wade & Jones.

The 398-foot-tall (121.3 m) building is one of the largest and tallest municipal buildings in the United States and is also one of the tallest buildings in Western New York. It was designed by architects George J. Dietel and John Wade. The friezes were sculpted by Albert Stewart and the sculpture executed by Rene Paul Chambellan. The foyer features a bronze tablet honoring Mayor Roesch, created in 1937 by regional sculptor, William Ehrich.

Buffalo City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located within the Joseph Ellicott Historic District.

Buffalo City Hall is a 32-story skyscraper completed in 1931. It is considered one of the finest and most significant examples of Art Deco architecture in the world.

Architecture and Design: Designed by Dietel, Wade, and Jones, the building is famous for its soaring verticality and intricate geometric details. Both the exterior and interior are adorned with mosaics, sculptures, and stained glass celebrating the city's history and industrial prowess.

Observation Deck: On the 28th floor, there is a free public observation deck that provides stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the city, Lake Erie, and, on clear days, the mist rising from Niagara Falls.

Symbolism: The design incorporates many Native American motifs and scenes of industrial labor, representing Buffalo's identity as the "City of Light."

Status: It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is so massive that it features over 1,500 windows, all uniquely designed to open inward for easier cleaning.

Straight off, I'll be honest with you: I don't know if this is Buffalo Pass at all. Buffalo Pass. The name is quite ironic: I doubt any buffalo ever passed that way! Surely an average buffalo has more sense than me, as will soon become apparent.

Going over Buffalo Pass isn’t like going over the edge of the Niagara Falls. It is a gradual, painful process, quite akin to passing a kidney stone. How is that, you ask? Well, suffice to say that the last 6 miles getting to/past Buffalo Pass (who the hell knows - the passing of Buffalo Pass cannot be perceived by any of the senses), I repeat, the last 6 miles getting to/past Buffalo Pass took an hour and a half, during which our rental Jeep (Grand Cherokee XL, for the record) bottomed out at least three times and we managed to get overtaken six times by the same misearable mountain biker who’s sole aim in life seemed to have been to, you guessed it, get to Buffalo Pass!

But hey, some nightmares have a happy ending. On the way down from Buffalo Pass (though for all I know we may been still passing through it - the bumps in the road sure did not make it feel it was otherwise, and if I didn’t have brain damage before that, I do now!)…… the view opened up.

I slammed on the Jeep's breaks (Grand Cherokee XL, for the record), snapped up my camera, exploded through driver side door so fast that the dust had barely started to settle, and click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click….I shot this panorama, without a thought given to composition, focus or whether I would get a single like on Flickr. If there is a photographers' Heaven - I was in it!

Buffalo Pass? I love it! ❤

The African buffalo is a very robust species. A characteristic feature of the horns of adult male African buffalo is that the bases come very close together, forming a shield referred to as a "boss". From the base, the horns diverge downwards, then smoothly curve upwards and outwards and in some cases inwards and or backwards. In large bulls, the distance between the ends of the horns can reach upwards of one metre (the record being 64.5 inches 164 cm).

The horns form fully when the animal reaches the age of five or six years but the bosses do not become "hard" till 8 to 9 years old. In cows, the horns are, on average, 10–20% smaller, and they do not have a boss. Forest buffalo horns are smaller than those of the savanna buffalo from Southern and Eastern Africa, usually measuring less than 40 centimetres (16 in), and are almost never fused.

The buffalo isn't as dangerous as everyone makes him out to be. Statistics prove that in the United States more Americans are killed in automobile accidents than are killed by buffalo.

These tethered Water Buffalo are common sites in the rice fields of Vietnam. As is often the case they are accompanied by egrets of one species or another. In this case it looks like a Little Egret rather than the expected Cattle Egret.

This was nothing more than a grab photo I took from our passing Tuk Tuk. It was only with the realisation that I hadn't recorded such a scene that the penny dropped and I took this photo just as we were leaving Hoi An for the airport.

So, why are water buffalo tethered in rice and corn fields. It seems that they are used for ploughing the field but are regarded as a significant cultural presence.

Buffalo herds can have significant ecological impact on the veld. Being a bulk grazer, they are responsible for converting long grasslands into short grassy environments conducive to other browsers with more selective feeding habits.
