"Buffalo"
Hard to imagine "Buffalo Bill" or "Buffalo, New York" being called "American Bison Bill" or "American Bison, New York", but that is the proper name for the animals in this picture: American Bison (Bison bison).
According to the National Park Service ( nps.gov ), millions of bison once roamed from the Alaskan forests to the grasslands of Mexico, from Nevada eastward to the Appalachian Mountains. By the late 1800s there were only a few hundred left, hunted nearly to extinction, their lands "tamed" by European settlers. As of 2015, about 10000 bison were protected in public lands.
This picture was taken in Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR, home to a free-roaming herd of about 100 bison.
Hint: This grouping was separated from the herd. Their eyes are closed and their tails are down, trying to relax in the blazing sun and high temperatures. If they open their eyes, and their tails are straight up, you could be in trouble!
