Buena Vista Street

Disney California Adventure, Disney Resort

Anaheim, CA

05-01-23

When DCA opened in 2001 the entrance was completely different than what it is now, a celebration of how Los Angeles looked in the 20s and 30s when Disney began making cartoons. This souvenir stand, made to look like a gas station (complete with antique pumps) is called Oswald's after the Disney character he animated for Universal, called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

I'm always impressed with how the Disney Imagineers and architects are able to create new "places" and buildings which are always true to Walt Disney's original vision. (This vision was somewhat blinded by the entrance to DCA when it opened.)

Another Souvenir stand built like a vintage service station and called Oswald's, but with a completely different look is in Florida's Hollywood Studios Park at Walt Disney World. The car is a 1937 Packard One Twenty Coupe, by the way.

There's nothing as lovely and cheerful as Christmas in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure is no slouch either with its Christmas Cheer.

Eat your heart out Flos V8 Café. Oswald’s has the best prices on Osolene in town!

Streamline Moderne has always been one of my favorite forms of architecture. The clean lines are placed so deliberately, and the impact is always huge. Needless to say, I absolutely love the Streamline fins that adorn the top of the entrance to Disney California Adventure.

These fins were inspired by the facade of the Pan Pacific Auditorium that unfortunately fell to ruin and eventually burned down.

I also considered "Buena Vistmas" but decided that might actually be -too- deep into Pun-Land.

This tree just outside of Elias & Co may not meet the same stature as its towering brother on Main Street, but it is a charming display in its own right, draped in all sorts of 1920's-themed ornaments and decorations.

Spring seems to be right around the corner! …Although this photo is from last spring!

I haven't been in love with all of the Diamond Celebration decorations. But Carthay really looks spiffy when it's all dressed up to celebrate. It ALMOST looks like it was always this way.

Edit: Thanks everybody for helping this get Explored!

Most people wanted to ride the Red Car Trolleys on Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure on this rainy night, but I prefered to take photos!

Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood with a dream and a smile. Perhaps he knew what was to come.

One of the most nostalgic joys to experience when walking through a Disney park is the warm, inviting glow of a candy store window beckoning you inside. The execution of that with Trolley Treats on Buena Vista Street is no less than perfect.

Edit: Thanks for Explore, everybody! I particularly liked this pic and am glad to know it's not just me!

With the addition of Cars Land, it's almost easy to forget about the complete transformation of the park entrance into Buena Vista Street. The beautiful themed area leads to the re-creation of the Carthay Circle Theater at the end of the street. It's a great place to sit, relax, and watch the cable cars as they glide by. Maybe with a Starbucks in hand of course!

Hidden inside the Spanish Colonial Revival replica tower of the Carthay Circle Theater Restaurant is this mural of Snow White's enchanted forest.

Slightly different take on the outside architecture.

The star of the show at California Adventure has definitely been Cars Land, but Buena Vista street is a welcome refresh of the entrance to California Adventure. There is a lot of great architecture and the new stores are interesting to explore.

Once again, we fly back out west for a walk down Buena Vista Street at Disney's California Adventure. If you ever get the opportunity to close out a Disneyland park and have it all to yourself, you can picture Walt himself walking down those lonely trolley tracks looking around at his wonderful creations. Its almost a step back in time as you the viewer stares up those lonely tracks to Carthay Circle and wander what this world would be like if Disney was never created. Some say, "It was all started by a mouse," I say, "It was all started by a Walt." Have a magical day!

I've been wanting to take some minimalist style photos, and the blooming Tabebuia trees at Disneyland are feeding that desire! I love the crispness of the light, the colors, and the simplicity of it all!

Thanks for your views, comments, and favorites!

The Red Trolley Car at Disney California Adventure park are replicas of the Pacific Electric Railway's "Red Cars" that used to Travel through California in the 1900s. When Buena Vista Street open 2012, Disney return the Trolleys that once cross Los Angeles...in smaller Destination ( Buena Vista to Hollywood Tower).

“The Carthay Circle,” in miniature glory. Built to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Disney California Adventure Park today (even if it technically wasn’t an opening day landmark.)

Some more of the beautiful new Carthay Circle Fountain and one more piece of new Buena Vista Street to drool over.

As for the shot, this is a single shot, processed with Camera Raw, CS5, and Nik Color Efex.

Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :)

It's always fun to catch a performance at Disneyland, such as one by Five & Dime who perform on Buena Vista Street at Disney's California Adventure.

As anyone who has experienced it knows, Buena Vista Street is amazing. It's a great opening act to the new Disney California Adventure, and it's really hard to imagine that this used to be Sunshine Plaza.

At the end of Buena Vista Street is Carthay Circle Theatre, and just before that is "Storytellers," the new statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. Carthay Circle houses a pretty impressive restaurant, with an equally impressive lounge. We spent a lot of time there this trip, and I can't wait to head there again.

For the Buena Vista Street grand opening party, there were tons of searchlights all over the park, including a good dozen or so on top of Carthay Circle Theatre. As we were there to enjoy the party, I almost didn't stop to take this photo, as I assumed the searchlights were a permanent fixture. I couldn't help myself, though, so I stopped to capture it. I'm glad I did, as they were gone by the next day...

If you've never visited Disneyland Resort, it's time to plan a visit. It's firing on all cylinders right now and the overall package, I think, is better than Walt Disney World, which we also love.

Life used to be easier. Getting across town was as simple as hoping on a Red Car Trolley and meals consisted of fresh produce you got at the corner market.

Now you sit in traffic and order your meals through a clowns mouth or microwave something you can't even identify as actual food.

Oh, the good ole days. Thankfully they still live on Buena Vista Street.

From Disney's California Adventue Park, this shot is a little farther back behind the trees than I normally shoot. Love this area of the park. Buena Vista Street is was decked out for the holidays perfectly.

For better viewing, please View Larger On Black if you have a moment. Thanks!

Two years ago, if you had the misfortune of walking through Disney's California Adventure during the holidays, you had to actually look around for a while before finding any decorations while being regaled by holiday favorites by the Beach Boys. Something about that experience never quite put me in the holiday mood. For most guests, they probably didn't even notice a change of decor until they spotted a small tree way out on Paradise Pier at some point during the day.

Today, the entrance to the park is nearly unrecognizable as it has been re-themed to Buena Vista Street in Los Angeles, circa 1937. One of my favorite moments in that park came just a couple weeks ago as I suddenly heard Bing Crosby singing "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, toys in every store" while literally looking at toys in the window as a trolly car clanged past. It just doesn't get any better than that. I've always loved heading down to Disneyland during the holidays, but now, thanks to John Lasster and company, Disneyland has some serious competition just across the Esplanade. Between the large tree out in front of Elias and Company, the bell playing carolers, the department store Santa, and decorations, you literally begin to experience Christmas as it was in 1937. What an amazing transformation! If you haven't been down to Buena Vista Street yet during the holidays, be sure to add it to your list of things to do. Pop into the Fiddler Fifer and Practical Cafe for a Peppermint Mocha, find a bench, and just soak in the holidays.

The Red Car Trolleys live again on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure.

When I saw this scene I was struck by the light pouring out of the door and windows of the trolley. I knew it had to be seen in Black & White to really set the tone of the scene as I saw it that night.

Love that Disney is using Oswald in the parks!

Taken from Inside the Magic: The new statue is called “Storytellers,” depicting a younger, more casual Walt, as he may have looked just after stepping off a train into California with, as Disney likes to put it, little more than “a suitcase and a dream.” Unlike “Partners” at Disneyland, which is elevated amidst a large flower bed and directly inaccessible to guests, “Storytellers” is at ground level, allowing fans to come closer than ever to Walt himself.’
