Buddha Jayanthi Celebration in 2025 at International Buddhist Seminary (Naagasena Buddha Vihaara) Bengaluru.

Buddha Purnima (Buddha Jayanti or Vesak) is a major Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha. In 2025, it was celebrated on May 12, marking the 2587th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

"The mind is everything. What you think you become."

Hanamatsuri is the festival of flowers celebrated on the occasion of Buddha's birthday. Indians celebrates Buddha purnima (full-moon) as it falls on the day of the Full Moon in April or May.

Buddha Purnima (full moon day of the lunar month Vaishaaka) is considered the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar. This day encompasses the birth, enlightenment (Nirvana), and passing (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. At the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhist held in Sri Lanka in 1950, it was Nepal to declare a public holiday on Buddha Purnima and request all other countries for the same.

Many devotees visited Boudhanath Stupa on this day. This is the largest stupa in Nepal which was built in 5th century during the reign of King Mānadeva. This stupa is said to entomb the remains of a Kasyapa sage venerable both to Buddhists and Hindus. As of 1979 this is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pavarana is a Buddhist holy day celebrated on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month. It marks the end of the month of Vassa, sometimes called "Buddhist Lent." This day marks the end of the rainy season in some Asian countries like Thailand, where Theravada Buddhism is practiced. On this day, each monk (Pali: bhikkhu) must come before the community of monks (Sangha) and atone for an offense he may have committed during the Vassa.

Most Mahayana Buddhists do not observe Vassa, though many Son/Thien monks in Korea and Vietnam do observe an equivalent retreat of three months of intensive practice in one location.

Buddha passed into eternity after completing his Sahasra Chandra Darshana i.e., 1000 full moon days (80th year) on the full moon day of Vaishaakha - the day of his birth as also of his Enlightenment. And to this day, Buddha lives on as a beacon-light to billions the world over, who yearn for the peace and well-being of all living creation.

I captured this photograph from Basabo Buddhist temple.

old dhankar monastery's top most floor with prayer flags all around.

dhankar is also of art historical importance. founded between 7th and the 9th centuries, dhankar’s old temple complex occupies the southern part of the steep mountain slope of the village. it is known by the name of lha-o-pa gompa (monastery of the followers of lha-o). the monastery consists of a number of multi-storeyed buildings perched together, giving a fortress like impression.

tea-distributer, resting on the edge of the road with the lower dhankar town in the backdrop. during this celebration of buddha jayanti, food and tea were freely distributed among the people, as they had come from every corner of spiti and beyond.

there are few home stays available down there, but carrying camera or luggage down the sandy sedimentary slope of this mountain was very scary, hence we had to drop the idea of staying there. there are few more high up in the upper town by the nono's palace but again we avoided that too, to avoid any excess physical strain that might ignite acute mountain sickness ams.
