I have photographed many staircases but this one from Prague is a remarkable piece in my collection.
The staircase is located in Nova Scena, a theatre building constructed around 1980 in so-called Brutalist architecture style. Even though the origin of Brutalist is not "brutality" I find the staircase looks a bit brutal with all its edges and the monstruous, almost terrifying chandelier 😄
… St Giles Cripplegate, facing the Barbican Centre. St Giles’ tower is a XVII Century addition. The church was heavily damaged during the Blitz, but contrary to the rest of the neighbourhood, it was rebuilt and not replaced by brutalist monstrosities.

Brutalism • Reimagined
Brutalist architecture is one of the most controversial styles of architecture to exist. It’s what people imagine when they think about what a prison looks like, with its cold and imposing exterior. Brutalism is also what people typically picture when they think of government buildings or schools built in the 1950s-1960s.
Brutalist style is known for its heavy, imposing appearance. If there’s one word that can sum up the entirety of brutalism, it’s the word “concrete.” The style came as a response to the sleek and polished Moderne style popular during the early 20th century.

Geometric brutalist architecture to be found incongruously in the beachside conurbation of Los Arenales near El Altet airport
Saw this kind of brutalist building in Ciney. I couldn’t find the entrance but when I was going home I saw a path to this building
Cameron Offices, Belconnen, Canberra, ACT. Mostly neglected but a fine example of early brutalist architecture designed by John Andrews. Unfortunately I forsee the demolition of this building in the near future, but hope I am wrong.
The National Theatre on London's Southbank sits next to Waterloo Bridge and overlooks the river Thames. The architecture of the building strikes a 'love it or hate it' chord with a lot of people. Anyone that knows my photos will know that I fall firmly into the 'love it' camp and this photo illustrates why. Yes, it can be a drab piece of grey concrete on a grey London day. But just look at what it also can be! When the sun is low in the sky and the light is right and the shadows are being cast like they are here, well, even the most hard-hearted brutalist architecture hater will surely be swayed.

Karlovy Vary is famous for its wonderful city architecture and great location. The Hotel Thermal may be fine example of Brutalist architecture, but to build it in the middle of Karlsbad was a crime. Several irreplaceable historic structures were destroyed and 10 years of construction must have been unbearable. In the 1970's the people who made decisions where largely incompetent. The Architects Věra Machoninová and Vladimír Machonin are not to blame, but it just feels inappropriate to be in the city center. Of course my opinion is bias, as I did never see any example of brutalism architecture I liked.

Pastoral scene on the outskirts of Derby...just a few edits in Snapseed.
Derby can be an unlovable city, hardly any historic buildings left intact, brutalist architecture in places and the odious Intu shopping mall...however, a short drive gets you into the countryside and that’s a big plus.
A foggy night at the Christian Science Center Plaza. Looking through the trees past the fountain (not yet on) toward the reflecting pool, Mother Church, and the trio of Brutalist buildings that ring the reflecting pool: the Colonnade Building, Reflection Hall, and the towering 177 Huntington, the former CSC Administration Building-- all designed in the early 1970s by Araldo Cossutta of I. M. Pei & Associates. Back Bay, Boston.

Here's an extract from a bruchure on the opening of the St Leonards Centre in Crows Nest, Sydney.
‘To those who work here, St Leonards Centre has been designed as a home away from home for the 400 people who will eventually work there. It is fully air-conditioned, tastefully decorated in bright colours, carpeted throughout, and includes every possible staff amenity.
In order to gain maximum utilisation from St Leonards Centre, parts of it will work around the clock. The computer installation, for example, never needs to sleep, eat meals or take holidays, and seldom gets sick. When fully operational, St Leonards Centre will employ staff on a three shift basis - about 300 on daylight, 60 on twilight and 40 on night. Cleaning and maintenance of the building will be carried out in the small hours of the morning to eliminate needless interruptions.
Originally the Esso Motor Hotel and built in 1971, this example of Brutalist architecture is still open for business (or would be were it not for covid restrictions).

Brutalist architecture is an influential and polarizing architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century. It is characterized by its raw, robust, and utilitarian aesthetic, often featuring large, exposed concrete structures. Brutalist buildings display a sense of monumentality and solidity, with bold geometric forms and a distinct lack of decorative embellishments. The style prioritizes functionality and the honest expression of materials, focusing on the inherent qualities of concrete. While some consider Brutalism to be visually austere, proponents of the style appreciate its uncompromising honesty, the sculptural qualities of its forms, and its ability to evoke a sense of awe and timelessness.

We stayed near Waterloo Bridge this time, and just across the water is the National Theatre with its many balconies and towers, designed by Denys Lasdun it is typical example of Brutalist architecture.
Along the Christian Science Center Plaza reflecting pool looking toward 177 Huntington, the former CSC Administration Building, and the Colonnade Building, two of the three Brutalist buildings (designed by I. The Sirius building is an apartment complex in The Rocks district of Sydney. It was built to rehouse public tenants who had been displaced after a controversial redevelopment of the the area during the 60’s and 70’s.
A decision to sell the building was made in 2015, thereby placing it under risk of demolition due to a lack of any heritage protection. It’s future remains in doubt.
I like this building. I like it a lot in fact, particularly the strong lines, crisp shadows and idealism it embodies. It’s one of only few prominent examples of Brutalist architecture in Sydney.
Shine on Sirius.
