For ten days in October 2021, the brutalist concrete structure known as the International Congress Centre Berlin was open to the public as a unique experience of film, performance and art. We visited the ICC Berlin on the first few days of The Sun Machine is Coming Down, a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Berliner Festspiele.

Since we are big fans of brutalist architecture, visiting the International Congress Centre Berlin was always in our sight. This gorgeous landmark of German architecture is massive beyond comparison, making it one of the largest congress venues in the world.

There seems to be something rather desolate about Mile End tube station, with the renovations not completed. The sort of brutal architecture interested me though.

A solitary high-rise stands against the vast sky, its stark geometry emphasized by the interplay of light and shadow. The black-and-white tones accentuate the contrast between the sunlit balconies and the darkened facade, giving the structure an almost sculptural presence.

The repetitive pattern of windows and railings creates a rhythmic visual effect, evoking a sense of order and uniformity often found in modern urban landscapes. Yet, subtle details—open windows, perched birds—hint at the human lives within, adding depth to the otherwise rigid composition.

A study in minimalism, contrast, and the quiet poetry of architecture.
