BROODS perform at the Bumbershoot 2017 music festival held at the Seattle Center every Labor Day Weekend in Seattle, Washington, USA
Happy Wing Wednesday! I was chasing another insect in my yard (Durham NC USA) when this cicada came out of some vegetation and perched on a tree. I got a few images before it flew off.
Periodical Cicada - Magicicada species
Having watched insects for 30 years in this area, I have seen periodical cicadas only in years when brood XIX (a 13-year brood) is expected: 1998 and 2011. They are expected back in spring 2024. My best guess is that this is an off-year emergent of brood XIX.

In one frame I can just see that the underside of the abdomen is tan, so this is most likely:
Riley's 13-year Cicada - Magicicada tredecim
Edit. There is also an orange mark on the edge of the pronotum, another character for tredecim.
Thinking back to 2011, this was the only species I found emerging in my yard. (The other common one in the area in 2011 was M. tredecassini, which has a mostly dark abdomen.)
"And as I sat there, brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out Daisy's light at the end of his dock. He had come such a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close he could hardly fail to grasp it. But what he did not know was that it was already behind him, somewhere in the vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night." ~ F Scott Fitzgerald (from "The Great Gatsby")
Red drum brood stock, or parent fish, are collected from coastal waters and placed into round fiberglass tanks inside environmentally controlled rooms in the hatchery building. Scientists manipulate water temperature and day length to mature red drum brood stock to spawn in captivity.

The combs that are covered over contain larvae that will soon hatch. This is called capped brood. When we took the hives apart to inspect them we found a lot of capped brood. These worker bees are busy feeding the larvae and capping off the combs.
