There's a nest of Wrens living in the back yard! And not all of the hatchlings are Wrens! There's a Cowbird chick in the mix.
Cowbirds lay their eggs in nests that are already occupied by another family of birds. Then, the birds who have already made the nest and laid their eggs wind up feeding and raising the Cowbird chick as if it were one of their own. This is called a "Brood Parasite". The problem is: the Cowbirds are usually larger than the original nesting chicks and therefore brute their way to most, or all, of the food that the parenting birds bring back. They will even push one or more of the other hatchlings out of the nest. But nature must take it's course, so I'm staying out of all that bird drama.
With some prep and consideration I devised a plan to take pictures of this little nest. It was after sunset and the birds were nested way down in there, so it was pretty dark. With a flash mounted on-camera, aimed straight up and bounced off of a lawn umbrella, I was able to get enough light for the exposure. The camera was on a tripod with a remote trigger and I was sitting about 10 feet away to release the shutter when the parenting Wrens came to feed the hatchlings.
I'm going to photograph the nest a few more times, and document this relation as it evolves over the next few weeks. I'll keep ya posted :)
Recept uit het boek Brot backen in Perfektion van Lutz Geissler. In alle recepten in dit boek wordt maar heel weinig gist gebruikt. In het deeg voor deze broden zit maar 0,2 gram droge gist op 585 gram bloem/meel. Lutz gebruikt in het boek 0,5 gram verse gist. Het deeg wordt niet gekneed, alleen kort gemengd en na 8 en 16 uur stretch & fold. Na 24 uur vormen, ± 1 uur rijzen en dan afbakken.
This one probably better qualifies as a Max, using only parts from all 3 of the Fang Gang Mixel sets (41512, 41513, & 41514). I had first intended to build a full sized Brood Queen, but started running out of parts before I could finish the legs, so I scaled it back to a Brood Drone.
Forge World Skaven Brood Horror that I play as my second HBA. This model was a must have for me and was a joy to paint. I went for a pale, just out of a dark stinky hole skin tone. Also first time I used spot treatments of the gloss varnish (on the open sores and mouth).
There's been a lot of talk on various news sites about the Brood X (that's a Roman numeral "10") cicadas that are in the process of emerging from their 17-year circle of life to mate. This particular brood mostly exists in Indiana and Ohio, along with a stretch of the piedmont on the eastern side of the Appalachians, so we're not seeing them in Chicago. I did see one a couple of weeks ago at Robin's parents' old house down on the river in Gallatin County, Kentucky, though, so there's some spillover from the Hoosiers.
The cicada thing can be confusing for people, because it seems like the news folk are talking about the emergence of 17-year cicadas every other year. That's because they are. There are just a bunch of different kinds of cicada. Some cicadas have annual cycles, and you'll see them every summer. Other cicadas have cycles of 13 years or 17 years, though the cycles of different cicadas in different places fall on different years. Cyclical cicadas that emerge in the same year are considered part of the same "brood." A map I found online identifies 12 different broods of 17-year cicadas in the United States. This year's Hoosier and Buckeye cicadas are from Brood X. (I'm sure the overlay with the B1G 10 Conference college football teams is coincidental.) The 17-year cicadas we get in Chicago are from Brood XIII, and we're due to see them in 2024. (I got pictures of cicadas from the last emergence of Brood XIII in 2007. They were among the first pictures I ever posted to the Flickr. The picture in the link is my 193rd posted picture. This picture is number 17,342. It will be interesting to see what number my picture of the next cicada from Brood XIII will be.)
There are a couple of cyclical things for me to look forward to in 2024. On April 8, 2024, maybe two months before the Brood XIII cicadas emerge, there will be a total eclipse with a zone of totality slicing right across Indiana, not too far from Chicago. I'll be getting pictures of that, too. (I'm thinking about going down and getting a shot in the Indiana windmill farms. I'll spend the next three years nervous about the weather.) That will be the second of two eclipses I've been looking forward to since I first learned about them in 1999, and will be the last total eclipse to occur anywhere convenient to me in my probable lifetime.
