The Goshawk has to be one of my favourite birds of prey but it remains particularly elusive with only around 400 breeding pairs in the UK. Whilst numbers have increased the species remains the target of egg collectors and still subject to persecution on some managed estates. This is actually a rescued bird I was fortunate to observe and photograph on private woodland.
This man has seen a lot in his lifetime. Unbending will and fortitude allowed him to succeed in his business. They say about such people - hardened by life.

On May 11th 1889 James Maybrick, a wealthy Liverpool cotton broker, died in this house. The cause of his death is likely to be either :
- gastroenteritis caused by his long term habitual over-use of poisonous drugs for medicinal purposes
- poisoning by his wife in revenge for his shameless philandering and coldness towards her
- poisoning by his wife so that she could be united with her own secret lover
- poisoning by his brother Michael Maybrick, a bachelor of enigmatic character, a professional singer and composer who lived in London, a misogynist who despised his sister-in-law and who has subsequently been suspected of being the infamous Jack the Ripper serial murderer
So which is is most likely?
James Maybrick's wife, the American born Florence Elizabeth Chandler, was subsequently found guilty of his murder. She was sentenced to hang (later commuted to a life sentence) - an outcome regarded as one of the most blatant injustices in English legal history.
