This man has seen a lot in his lifetime. Unbending will and fortitude allowed him to succeed in his business. They say about such people - hardened by life.

Certainly can spot this place from a mile away!!!

I spotted this old sign down some of the back streets of the City. Pater & Co have long since ceased trading.

EXPLORED

The day I arrived in Srinagar, there was strike which I wasn’t aware of as I was on the road for long. i thought it was offseason. There was a clash going on between Muslims and state government (this is pretty regular issue) regarding a temple dispute. Apparently, I found myself the only tourist in miles. This caused me serious problems from the touts and brokers as they were out of business for a while now.

I will remember Toya, the house boat owner of Irfan palace, as long as I will remember Kashmir. This guy started following me from the moment I got off from the jeep I hired from Leh. He was offering me services and telling me he owns the boat and his family lives there. So he would take care of me like authentic Kashmiri way. Meanwhile another guy joined in this party followed by another few, they all were offering the best. I was tried as it is, and this torture of the touts was making me furious. To my astonishment, they started fighting among each others about who should take me to their house boats. Toya, the owner of Irfan Palace house boat took a quite few beatings as I ended up his Shikara(little boats they call).

Irfan Palace Boat house is just one of the house boats among hundreds of house boats in the lake. this one was on the better side of the lake. He took me there with such small boats(similar size as you can see in the picture) which I found a bit risky to board on with my camera equipments. However, we made it safely.

Now he asked for 1000 rupees for one night and 700 rupees per meal. This evoked fire in me and I started swearing at him for the ultimate harassment because earlier he offered his price will start from 200 rupees per night and meal wont cost more than 50 rupee. The reason he did this cause he knows I wont be able to get off the boat house without the help of his Shikara and he thought as I was tried, I would give up & surrender to whatever he says. Now, there were other touts circling near the boat house like the vultures and I shouted at Toya that I am leaving for the shore to check in to a hotel. At this point, Toya ended up verbal arguments with his wife and agreed for 250 rupees per night.

His wife gave me a traditional Kashmiri Tea called Kava … this tasted so good and made me relaxed. But my relaxation short lived! All the hawkers started to come by the boat and tried to sell stuffs to me. They wouldnt leave even if i said i dont want any, they would simply park their boats infront of the boat house seizing my opportunity to relax. Toya didn’t discourage these hawkers much as I know he would get some commissions from them. In their conversation, I found out it was strike today and things can get worse soon. I decided to leave Srinagar next day.

The Dal Lake is a famous lake in Srinagar, the summer capital of the northernmost Indian administered state of Jammu & Kashmir. The lake itself is connected to a number of other lakes of the Kashmir valley. It is well known for its approximately 500 Victorian-era wooden houseboats, originally built as vacation homes for landless British administrators during the Raj. The lake covers 18 square kilometers, and is divided by causeways into four basins, called Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin. Lokut-dal and Bod-dal have an island each in the centre, known as Rup Lank (or Char Chinari) and Sona Lank respectively. Along most of the shore of the lake is a boulevard, lined with Mughal-era gardens, parks, and hotels. During the winter season the lake sometimes freezes over.

I went out with a big Shikara(the one you see parked in the pictures) to roam around the Dal lake, this journey was simply awesome. The boat man took me to the kashmiri silk shops and I ended up buying some Pashmina shawls. Next day, before I was leaving, I checked the floating vegetable market there. It wasn’t very colourful. But the journey at 5.30am in the morning was simply enchanting as praying sounds from the distance mosques was echoing mixed with the splashing noise to water.

Before I was leaving, the shikara man told me Toya is a drug addict, he has two sons. Elder son left him and younger one is with his mother. Toya spends his money on drugs; his poor wife sometimes ends up starving. This statement matched as this couple was constantly arguing and at night I couldn’t get a sleep cause of her crying & moaning. I suddenly felt so bad for Toya and that poor woman as there is no one to help them out from this misery. I prayed for them and headed for Jammu from where I will go to Delhi. This was my story from Kashmir, the city described as heaven on earth.

p.s - Sorry I had to skip posting Kargil and road to Srinagar shots as I have displaced it somewhere else.

Sell,Sell,Sell, says Ally the Stockbroker. And she says a big hello and waggy tail to Matilda & Elanor. I had the pleasure of spending the day with one of my flickr friends, Maureen and her husband. It was great to catch up.

Changed the face and head on him, also gave him a new gun. Much better.
