The British Invasion of 1963-64 wasn’t just about The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits and Lulu. It was also about Carnaby Street fashions worn by a young woman named Lesley Lawson, AKA Twiggy. The hats and skirts worn by Twiggy swept across the American landscape as quickly as the Fab Four’s popularity.
The British Invasion was also about sports cars. In the years following WWII, vets began bringing home MG TD and A roadsters, Triumphs and Austin Healy, Bug-eyed Sprites. When Jaguar introduced the E-Type, marketed as the XKE in the states and a certain British Secret Agent introduced us to Aston Martin’s fabulous DB5, many young American men began to see all true sports cars as being British. Soon, Austin Mini Coopers joined the rush to American roads, giving America a taste for mini cars that helped open the doors for Fiat and Alfa Romeo to start making a dent in US auto buying as well. By the end of the decade, Japan had joined in on the invasion too. Detroit’s monopoly on American auto buying tastes was over.

For many baby boomer males, our introduction to the fabulous Bentley came from the British TV show, The Avengers.
You see, the British Invasion of the early 1960s was not just about The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It was not just about girls wearing miniskirts made from psychedelic fabrics or about the knee high boots that completed the look.
It was also about secret agents!
The Avengers capitalized on the frenzy the early James Bond films created and American film and television quickly got on board with products of their own.
Get Smart, I Spy and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. top the list of US shows. To counter Mr Bond, the USA had James Coburn as Our Man Flint and Dean Martin as Matt Helm.
There was one part of the success of the British, spy shows the US productions missed. That is, Dianna Riggs as Mrs. Emma Peel. While Patrick Macnee’s John Steed was a charming, witty fellow and the Bentley was Fab, It was Mrs Peel in her Lotus that had our attention.

There is no denying the Beatles had a HUGE influence on modern music as we know it. I for one was inspired to pick up guitar because of them.
But an interesting note is that aside from Paul's Hofner bass, the rest of the instruments they played were all American made!
George's Gretsch guitars were made in New York. John's (and George's) Rickenbackers were made in California and Ringo's Ludwig drums were produced in Indiana... Ringo was so proud of his "Imported from America" drums that he had the Ludwig logo printed on the bass drum head (it didn't come from the factory that way) So there you have it. The British Invasion was played on American Instruments... Kinda cool huh? :)
Beatnik:I wanted to enter this I BOX!
British:Well, is it so? Certainly! Why don't you wear the clothes incidentally?
Beatnik:Thank you kindly.
British:You're welcome. I entrusted it afterward!

Hi there! It's been a while!
The non-doll portion of my life has been pretty insane for the past six months. My job (ugh) is... ugh. I don't even want to get into that aspect of it. There were mass layoffs. There was an increase in the amount of work, and not in a meaningful way. So there's all of that. Ugh.
But, I also married my boyfriend of 5 years, and we bought his parent's home in the suburb where both of us grew up. And then moved! And then did some minor renovating! And now we live closer to both of our families and have a place we can call our own. So that has been pretty amazing.
But the combination of more to do at work and having to undergo two moves (ours and his family's) PLUS, has meant I really had to keep myself from going online in any way, shape or form to try to focus and not fall down the endless rabbit hole. But I ran away for awhile. I have some guilt about that.
Anyway. I am so glad to be back on Flickr. :)
