This museum is a : You-have-to-go-inside! So much to see, so much to discover. The museum was the reason for my trip to London. We have had an Exhibition with several pieces lended by the British Museum to Bonn/Germany. And I visited it several times only for seeing some chess figures made by the vikings. But it wasn't allowed to make fotos there. But.......
YES! here in London it was possible and my SD card was filled all over : )
These distortion images are always an actual image of architecture usually in London..........
Distortion of interior of the British Museum........
Please look at the other images in this set as well as my photostream.......

turquoise mosaic
Mexico, 15th-16th century AD
An icon of Mexica (Aztec) art, this striking object was probably worn on ceremonial occasions as a pectoral (an ornament worn on the chest).
------------------------------------------------
It is carved in wood (Cedrela odorata) and covered with turquoise mosaic. The wood is hollowed at the back.
Serpent imagery occurs throughout the religious iconography of Mesoamerica. The serpent is associated with several Mexica deities including Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent), Xiuhcoatl (Fire Serpent) and Mixcoatl (Cloud Serpent) or Coatlicue (She of the Serpent Skirt), the mother of the Mexica god Huitzilopochtli. The habit of snakes to shed their skin each year probably led to them being used to convey ideas concerning renewal and transformation. Likewise the ability of many species to move freely between water, earth and the forest canopy helped underline their symbolic role as intermediaries between the different layers of the cosmos (underworld, earth and sky).
Spondylus (thorny oyster) shell was used for the bright red details around the nose and mouth of both of this object's serpent heads. Strombus (conch) shell was used for the white teeth. Within the gaping mouths the resin adhesive was coloured bright red with hematite. Beeswax adheres to the edges of the empty eye sockets which were probably originally inlaid, perhaps with iron pyrites.
The reverse of the body is undecorated, although the surface may have originally been gilded, but the heads are worked in mosaic on both sides. Resins from pine and Bursera (copal) were used as adhesives for the mosaic.

British Museum photo, cropped and with very minor level adjustments. An admirably clear institutional photo! And an unusual one, of a local fish. I think this is an African snakehead, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parachanna_africana
The Benin "bronzes" have been much in the news in the art world of late. Nigeria has been seeking their return for decades, to little avail. But the French Musee de Quai Branly has agreed in principle to return their substantial holdings, which they purchased from the British Admiralty, which auctioned off much of their war booty from the conquest of the Kingdom of Benin in 1897. Details are here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_Bronzes
-- which includes a link to the BM holdings, by far the largest in the world.

Three Nereids
From the Nereid Monument, Xanthos, about 390-380 BC
Sculpture 912, 910, 909
The three figures are sea nymphs, daughters of the sea god Nereus, riding over the waves on Sea creatures. They are thought to have escorted the soul of the deceased on its journey to the afterlife. A sea bird is visible under the feet of the nymph to the far right and partially preserved dolphins support the others. Their dramatic, wind-blown drapery is clinging and almost transparent, wet With sea spray. They were originally placed between the columns of the tomb.

Two colossal winged human-headed lions that flanked an entrance to the royal palace of King Ashurnasirpal II (883–859 BC) at Nimrud, ancient Assyrian city located in Iraq.
Seen from The Post Building roof garden in Museum Street, Holborn. The building behind is The University of London and the ornate tower in the foreground, including a Roman on top, is the otherwise fairly unspectacular St George's Church in Bloomsbury. It does have a museum of comedy in the crypt though with regular performances by some big names.
