A Forster's tern unleashes a salty brine while shaking its head in flight at Barnegat Light State Park. Terns, like many other marine birds, possess nasal salt glands that allow them to secrete salt. This gives them the ability to consume salt water that would otherwise make us quite ill. Despite this ability, terns would rather drink fresh water when it is available. Forster's terns are agile in flight. This bird maintains an unwavering trajectory despite its contorted appearance. The Mongagu's Harrier is a raptor of the harrier family. It is a long distance migrant, that spends its summers in Eurasia and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. They don't look all that different than the Northern Harriers of North America and can be easily confused with Pallid Harriers that inhabit the same regions. Like the Northern Harrier, they are graceful and agile fliers, frequently soaring or hovering low over land while searching for prey. This is a male Montagu's Harrier. The females are brown in color with yellow and white markings. One of my absolute favorite birds is the Osprey. They are industrious, hard working birds. Unlike the eagle, that would rather steal a meal rather than catch it on its own, Osprey spend their time fishing. They are excellent anglers, having successful catch rates of up to 70%. Their toes are unique amongst birds, in that their outer toe is reversible. This allows them to grasp prey with two toes behind and two in the front, unlike the usual one behind and three in the front, of most other raptors. The pads on their feet are equipped with small barbs that make handling slippery fish easier. Everyone knows that this is an elephant! Right? But not everyone knows that there are different species of elephants. Until just a few years ago, it was generally accepted that there were two species of elephants, African and Asian, and that these were differentiated into subspecies. Genetic evidence, however, would suggest differently. Asian elephants are found predominantly in Southeast Asia and India. Evidence suggests that they differentiated from African elephants millions of years ago. African elephants, of which there are two types, bush and forest, were originally thought to be subspecies. Studies in 2010 seem to show that they, too, are separate species that branched off at about the same time as the Asian elephant. This African Bush Elephant is the largest terrestrial animal in the world. The forest elephant is smaller, and resides predominantly in the Congo. It is said that, "the eyes are the windows of the soul." Whether you interpret that euphemistically or literally, in no animal does that seem more true than the bison. North America's largest land animal has a look of resolve. It is one of determination and complacency, a gaze of solemn clarity. There is determination in every step they take. Although they can seem slow and lumbering, don't be fooled! A bison can outrun a human almost two fold. You don't want to meet those horns on the end of a one ton free running, fuzzy train. catching the waves from Mondays storm that rolled through.. this was early afternoon when I shot there from the base of the Burlington Skyway Bridge.. what wicked weather... awesome to catch...
It's just after sunset on the north end loop at Bosque del Apache refuge. Snow geese that have gathered there this evening decide it's time to take to the air in search of water. They have filled their bellies and will now make their way to the safety of the many crane and goose ponds that populate the refuge. It starts somewhere in the flock with an idea, ever so subtle and sudden. Then, almost simultaneously, the geese explode into the air, as if with a collective conscience. They are somehow connected in ways we cannot yet imagine. This darkly colored bird in flight Is called an Anhinga. They have also colloquially been known as water turkeys and snake birds. Unlike many waterfowl that float well above the water's surface due to oily substances applied to their wings, anhinga's feathers tend to get drenched during swimming. They are, therefore, much less buoyant, and swim with most of their body submerged. Their long skinny neck and head give them the appearance of a snake on the water since the body is barely visible. Despite this, they are actually graceful in flight. Landing is a different story, however. Anyone who has ever seen anhinga try to land in trees can attest to that. During the mating season their eyes become bright red and luminescent. I encountered this black-bellied plover this weekend on LBI, while out searching the coast with my camera. "How do I know it's a black-bellied plover," you ask? Well, there are a lot of characteristics that make it so. During the breeding season these medium to large shorebirds are easily distinguished by their black faces, chests, and bellies. When they are young (as with this bird) or in winter plumage it can be a more difficult task. One very little thing does set them apart, however. The black bellied plover is the only American plover that has a tiny hind toe on its foot. You can see this toe clearly on both feet in this photo. It is certainly much harder to see in the wild, while this bird is scurrying about. Black-bellied plovers breed in the arctic islands during the spring and summer months. They seem to like their weather cold. Plovers, in general, are noted for their large eyes relative to head size. A peregrine falcon sat jealously watching a golden setting sun. As I approached, he stopped me. "Who are you, and what do you want of my sky?" he asked. "I'm just a man!" I exclaimed. "But I didn't realize that this was your sky?" "This IS my sky! My mother and father before me, taught me that this was my sky. They said I would rule this sky for as long as I lived." "I don't understand why we can't share the sky?" I replied. "I won't try to take it from you." He turned his back an looked adoringly at the golden sun as it crept below the horizon. "There is no room in my sky for one such as you! The sky is mine alone. In my world there is no place for sharing!" With that, he spread his wings and took to the air with the greatest of ease. He flew off into the distance, landing on another branch far from where I could be seen. He had reclaimed the sky for himself, free of me and any other human. A lioness sits atop a rock outcropping looking over the range. Family groups of lions, called prides, will set up a territory or range that they protect as their own. That territory can be as small as about 20 square miles or as large as several hundred. She may be looking for the next meal approaching on the horizon or she may be looking for trespassers. Who knows, perhaps she is simply enjoying a beautiful day and time alone!

I had never gone to see the CP Holiday train before, so tonight was the night... It is a great event that CP does, spreading Christmas cheer and raising money and food donations for local communities right across Canada and the USA.... Also live Music, tonight performing was Devin Cuddy and Kelly Prescott..... it was great seeing all the families out with there kids..a great turnout... This took place at the CP yard in the Runnymede and St Clair part of Toronto... So here is a shot of the train.. Get out there and track it down...
Greeting me with a cold shoulder, a Red Shouldered Hawk flies off to find a less intimidating landscape. It only moves off a few hundred feet, but far enough that it doesn't feel at risk by my presence. Red Shouldered Hawks are typically found were forests and water are present. They are medium sized hawks with reddish barring over their chests, that extends over their shoulders. The birds of Southern Florida, like this one, are typically paler in color. They also have a translucent crescent at the wing tips that can help identify the bird at a distance. These hawks appear to be fairly common and widely dispersed in the Florida Everglades. Lionesses of the same pride relax on the Serengeti plains. A storm looms in the distance. Female lions generally remain with their birth pride their entire lives. A lioness who is expelled from the pride will find it difficult to raise her cubs on he own. She may rejoin her pride or another, though joining another pride isn't that easy. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon
Xanthochroism is a genetic abnormality that causes a normally red color to be replaced by yellow or orange. It can happen in birds, however, in the case of house finches it it believed to be due to diet rather than an alteration in genetics. This is an orange morph house finch. The typical red color is replaced with an orange coloration. This male was seen together with normally colored males and females in Holgate. Theoretically, if this bird were to eat the same thing that other red colored males eat it would eventually develop normally colored plumage. Obviously, this change would be delayed at least through one molt. Well, I enjoy the color variation. Imagine if everything and everyone was the same color! How boring things would be! I revel in our differences. Each time I see this photo I can't decide if I should post it or not. It makes me laugh only because I know that nothing happened to anyone. I can't help think that it probably isn't a great idea to stick your head out the window when the worlds fastest cat is doing a beauty makeover in your side view mirror. Eventually, when the cat started to take an interest in the windows, they closed them. This cheetah was one of three, a mother and nearly full grown cubs. They also checked out the gas tank and the tires to see if there was anything they might be able to eat. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon
Commonly found in deciduous and mixed forests, the Chickadee is a year round inhabitant of the Northern US and much of Canada. They are universally inquisitive, curious about everything including humans. It's not unusual for me to find one sitting just a foot or two from where I am working outside, watching me intently. They have a complex language of calls, many of which seem to have specific meanings within a flock. Some of their calls have been described as having human language-like characteristics. It has also been said that the more dee notes in a chickadee-dee-dee call, the greater the threat level. A pride of lions at home in their pride area. This one even comes with a natural jungle gym (the tree on which the cubs are playing). Lions typically rest or sleep for up to 20 hours a day. Of course, the cubs are more active than the adults. A territory dominated by a pride is called a pride area. Single males that have been pushed out of their birth prides may travel in areas generally called a range. A Red-tailed hawk takes a leap of faith and flies off into a cloudy New Mexico sky. Red-tailed hawks have significant geographic variations in plumage. This is a southwestern variety and was photographed in Bosque del Apache NWR in San Antonio, New Mexico. The red-tailed hawk is one of the largest members of the genus Buteo and also one of the most common. They are also one of the most common birds used in falconry. A dark feathered morph of the red tailed hawk has been given the name "Harlan's Hawk." I must admit that I have a fascination with raptors. Watching their behaviors, it is easier for me to make a mental connection with the dinosaur relatives from which they are descendants. #ILoveBirds

While mom is home alone tending to the nest built primarily by her mate, another osprey attempts to drop by. The visit is not welcome, and she manages to fend off the unwanted arrival. These osprey chose a bare dead tree on the edge of a parking lot in Flamingo as their nest for 2015. They are smarter than they seem. They realize that they can tolerate the proximity to humans better than a lot of other predatory birds. It provides them, and their offspring, with a modicum of safety that other osprey, nesting farther away, may not enjoy. Another couple has chosen a nest on a walking bridge tower, not 10 feet from where human activity is frequent. That nest is busy each and every year I visit Flamingo. A double crested cormorant takes to the air with a freshly caught catfish. It knows that, within seconds, other cormorants will fly in and try to steal its meal. It will spend the next moments trying to evade competitors and attempting to orient the fish to be swallowed whole, head first.
Cormorants are ancient birds. It is believed that ancient ancestors of similar structure may date back to the time of dinosaurs. They have been described as having an appearance of something between a duck and a loon, but at times I think they almost appear dragon-like. You will frequently see them on riverbanks and shorelines sunning themselves with open wings. An injured cape buffalo returns fire by charging a pride of hunting lions in Ngorongoro Crater. Cape buffalo return again, and again, to help fend off the seemingly endless pursuit. Most lions won't hunt cape buffalo. They know that this large beast could easily injure or kill them. A few prides have made cape buffalo the main dish on their menu, including this pride in Ngorongoro. Even injured, the buffalo manages to fight back, and his colleagues take on the charge when he is too exhausted to continue. When he tries to lay down, they try to pick him up. They are ever so faithful, and will fight on even beyond when all hope seems lost. Nature's struggles can seem terrifying and terrible. Life and death are cycles. A young lion cub hangs out with its mother atop a rock outcropping in the Tanzania Serengeti. As she matures she will remain with her birth pride and eventually become a mother herself. Her brothers will eventually be cast out and will either find a pride of their own, or wander as a bachelor, either alone or in groups. The life of a lion isn't easy. The Florida Everglade provide ample opportunity to observe nature's pristine creatures, sometimes incredibly closely. Red-shouldered Hawks are fairly plentiful in the Everglades, however, none provided such an unfettered encounter as this dampened bird, on this foggy morning. When I approached, there were two red-tail hawks sitting on a sign. As I imagined would happen, one flew off within seconds of seeing me exit the vehicle. I took a few photos, at a distance, and then realizing that the bird was in no hurry to leave, approached slowly, taking a few photos with each step. I was no further than a car's length away. Eventually, it flew to another sign some 15 or 20 yards further down the road, and at that point I let it be. Who knows why this hawk decided to share its jealous sky with me that morning. Perhaps it already had a full belly and was content? Perhaps it just didn't sense a critical threat? It is an experience I would otherwise only expect from a captive bird. It is possible that this was, at some point, a rescue animal. That, too, might explain its reaction to my approach. A dunlin, in winter plumage, stands on one leg facing into the wind at Barnegat Light State Park. Dunlin are medium sized sandpipers that breed in the more northern parts of North America, Asia, and Europe. They look quite different during the spring and summer months in their breeding plumage. They migrate south to sandy shores and mudflats during the winter. The can still meet up with some pretty difficult weather in places like Barnegat. They have learned, however, that decreasing surface area exposed to the harsh winds also decreases their energy expenditure. Even with their plump bodies, they offer little resistance to the wind when pointed in the right direction and standing like this.
