Mafex is one of those lines that I generally only get if there's no other option. But occasionally, I will double dip just to see how their version compares to the Figuarts version.

Such was the case with Endgame Captain Marvel, which went on clearance a few months back. Not exactly surprising news, given the popularity of the character.

The overall colour scheme is definitely darker in comparison to Figuarts release. Neither of them really look like Brie Larson, though I guess the Mafex looks closer? You choices aren't that great to begin with, TBH. There's also a few minute paint differences in the details.

You definitely get more accessories with the Mafex version as compared to the Figuarts release. Of course, there's that price difference to account for, though the difference in MSRP is much smaller than normal given that the Figuarts version was a web exclusive.

In addition to an extra head and the various hands, the Mafex version comes with a variety of effects parts that replicate her aura and energy effects that generally found to be lacking from the Figuarts version.

Articulation wise, I'd have to go with Figuarts. Not that their version does anything extraordinary.. the figure behaves like what every other Figuarts generally does. It's more the surprising limitations on the Mafex, with it's non existent leg spreading capabilities. Neither figure can pull off a hero landing particularly well. From a sculpting perspective though, I have to give slight props to the Mafex, as the shoulders end up looking more bulky than the Figuarts version, especially when the arms are slightly raised. Range of motion on the knees is also less on the Mafex. Otherwise, the rest of the body functions effectively identically, with perhaps a slight advantage to the Mafex as her sash is slightly smaller.

Paint Application wise, I mean I don't have too many Mafex to compare it to, but in general paint has never really been an issue with this line. It's generally the Build Quality that gets people hung up, though fortunately there's nothing that stands out at me. I've heard horror stories on other figures about broken joints, or issues with limb length. Not exactly the things you want to hear when you're dealing with figures that are over 10,000 Yen.

To say that The Marvels was disliked by many people is an understatement - people HATED it. i watched it and while it certainly wasn't great, it wasn't terrible to me.. just really stupid.

Being a female led project I'm naturally interested in the character goods, and sure enough, S.H. Figuarts released a Captain Marvel. Sadly, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau never materialized, probably due to the negative press this movie got.

Anyway, I guess you can say that this figure had more accessories than any of the previous releases. Two head sculpts, two sets of energy effects, and Jones the... cat thing.. accompany a set of hands.

As you can see from the group pics, NONE of the Captain Marvel figures have an accurate face, with things getting worse I think with this latest release. About the only positive I can say from this aspect is that they at least got the hair closer, and the Binary mode sculpt at least looks more intense than previous efforts.

For likeness, at this scale you're still going for the Mafex Endgame version for accuracy.

The small energy effects I believe we saw in the Endgame version, but the actual energy blasts should be new. I don't think Jones was in any of the previous releases, and I'm too lazy to check.

When it comes to Articulation, I certainly wouldn't say it's anthing outstanding, or even that different compared to previous releases of the character, especially since it doesn't have a sash like the Endgame version. With a bit of imagination and brute force, you can pull off a decent number of poses though the hair will get in the way of posing.

On a related note, sadly this new version doesn't seem to feature as much Paint as the previous versions. People I've spoken to were disappointed in the lame suit compared to previous efforts, so it's only natural that the figure disappoints me in some way. Overall, it seems like its base plastic with some painted accents here and there (naturally the faces are painted) whereas previous version seem to have paint even on the suit itself. Maybe there's some top coat? I dunno.

Having said that, it's this lack of observable finish that basically said to me I might as well see how far I can push the articulation.

At least from a Build Quality perspective, things are pretty consistent. No real complaints with regards to finishes or joints, and the effects parts connect with the closed fists nicely.

Here's a silly illustration of Adventure Time's Lumpy Space princess cosplaying Captain Marvel.

And yes, the strongest one does her own stunts.

Having said that, it's this lack of observable finish that basically said to me I might as well see how far I can push the articulation.

At least from a Build Quality perspective, things are pretty consistent. No real complaints with regards to finishes or joints, and the effects parts connect with the closed fists nicely.

I dunno.
