A flower stem toppled over in the breeze and in the process of drying and breaking down. It seemed to have warm colours as though it had absorbed what it needed of the summer. 2 inches from the visible stem the the seed head ends. HMM

The last two posts have had one main leaf as the star of the image. Here there is a group of two, that act as one subject because of their close proximity to each other.

As with all of these shots, it is the colour and textures that I like. I have always been a big fan of trees and leaves. No matter what state a leaf is in from it first opening in the Spring to its total disintegration when decaying, I find them to be special.

I took this shot as part of a recce for my most recent 1-2-1 workshop concentrating on alternative camera techniques.

This was taken on a scrappy patch of land next to a railway platform which again is about 30 secs walk from my house...and as such will form part of my 'Back Yard' project.

It's a blend of three images, compressed in-camera and processed during the workshop.

If you or a partner/friend/family member would like a workshop please get in touch. I teach beginners, intermediates and alternative camera techniques.

A macro shot of yesterday's old derelict Pontiac. After ten years of photographing this car, I think I've gone over every square inch of its surface, yet I can still find something new. In part, that is because it is always changing, weathered by wind and heat and cold and blowing sand. In part, it is because a deep dive always produces the unexpected. I once had a great photography teacher whose singular command to his class was, "Surprise me!" If I can take it a step further and surprise myself, I know I'm having a good day.

I'm on the road but I brought along a suitable shot for Halloween. Dolls, like clowns, can be scary...

I shot this a few years ago in the Purgatory Garden of my late friend, metal sculptor Jan Johnson. His collection of dolls - found objects and donations from his many friends as their kids aged out of childhood - was unsettling to some. Most of them were in the woods surrounding his house: peering up from amid the mosses and ferns; gazing down from tree limbs; nestled in old tattered baby carriages; gleefully riding rusted toy cars. Here and there, a head on a platter or spike. Or in an old shoe, like this one.

Responses from visitors ranged from "I don't like this place" to "Oh, wow! Art everywhere!" I was in the latter camp. You have to dig black humour and social commentary to understand Jan. Whereas some people see only the darkness, others see Jan holding up a mirror to it, unafraid, in fact taking delight in the view. Artists are here to show others what they might be missing, and it doesn't have to be pretty. If it shakes us out of complacency and makes us feel... something... then art has been worth the effort of creating it.

I don't want to seem too serious about all this. Jan's work - even his serious work - was often playful. I can hear his laugh in the background: hee hee hee...

Happy Halloween!

Tan bonito. Como has amanecido.

Queremos dormir. Buenos días.

I've become

A simple souvenir of someone's kill

And like the sea

I'm constantly changing from calm to ill

Madness fills my heart and soul as if the great divide could swallow me whole

oh, how I'm breaking down
