National Warehouse is a complex of old brick industrial / warehouse buildings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is located at the intersection of South Water Street and an isolated leg of Bruce Street, in the Walkers Point / Fifth Ward area. A spur on the west side still sees active rail service, and other out-of-service tracks wind through the complex. Union Pacific has several other active tracks to the west and north, used for local switching and storage. This Union Pacific trackage was the route to the CNW lakefront Milwaukee station, across the nearby Milwaukee River swing bridge.

A Golden West Service boxcar (but with SSW reporting marks) was spotted at the loading dock on the west side of the complex in May 2010. Not sure what is typically shipped in and/or out. This kind of railroading (single breakbulk boxcar loads spotted at warehouse and dock sidings) has mostly disappeared, but hangs on here at National Warehouse.

WWL ALS successfully completes transport of the widest loads since records began through central London

Location: Central London – Canary Wharf in background

Description:

In May, 2013 Dragados Sisk Joint Venture (DSJV), the contractor constructing Crossrail’s Eastern running tunnels, approached WWL ALS (Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Abnormal Load Services UK International Limited) to discuss the practicality of delivering Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Jessica’ from Stepney Green, east London through to Limmo Peninsular, east London as part of the Crossrail Eastern Tunnels contract C305.

The challenge from DSJV was to transport the 1,300 tonne Herrenknecht S-721 TBM and back-up equipment in as large individual components as possible to enable DSJV to achieve the relocation quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.

For such a large-scale project nine months of intensive planning was required to determine a suitable route, obtain permits and liaise with multiple statutory authorities regarding the removal of street furniture, traffic management and street parking suspensions. The process required WWL ALS’ Project team to secure the necessary Be16 Special Order, VR1 and TTRO permits.

Extensive surveys were undertaken by WWL ALS to determine possible routes for this project. As part of this planning process innovative 3 dimensional laser mapping was used on dual carriageway sectors of the route with high traffic density, for scanning overhead gantry, bridge and tunnel heights and widths where manual means of checking clearances would be too hazardous.

Two optional routes were identified, and the least problematic option was selected to cause minimal disruption to residents and other road users. The route taken by all loads was eastbound via the A13 Limehouse Link Tunnel, with a height and width clearance of just a few centimetres for the largest items, and it also involved travelling contra-flow on a 750m section of this major arterial route (A13) for the two largest loads.

WWL ALS’ project team, headquartered in Hull, organised and closely supervised deliveries over a four week period for this challenging operation, concluding in April, 2014. TBM ‘Jessica’, which was dismantled and transported by road two months after completing a 2.7 kilometre underground drive from Pudding Mill Lane, involved a total of 26 x abnormal loads plus ancillary equipment. Due to the congested nature of the inner-city route, between seven and twelve police escort vehicles were required for each abnormal load movement in addition to the private escorts provided by WWL ALS.

An assortment of low loader and semi low loader vehicles were used, with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 114 Tonnes, and the time taken from collection to delivery of cargo was on average 90 minutes per movement. The largest items were transported towards the end of the project, involving loads with maximum dimensions up to 18.20 metres long, 7.10 metres diameter wide, 4.35 metres high and maximum weight 72 tonnes. The Metropolitan Police have commented that “these were the widest loads moved within central London since records began”.

WWL ALS’ Project team ensured that TBM ‘Jessica’ made the smooth 5 kilometre journey from one of Europe’s largest mined caverns at Stepney Green to Limmo Peninsular (Canning Town), east London within the scheduled timescale and budget for the project, where the TBM has been reassembled to commence work on the final Crossrail tunnels between Limmo Peninsular and Victoria Dock.

Within the next month WWL ALS will commence the relocation of TBM ‘Ellie’ (a sister machine to TBM ‘Jessica’), again from Stepney Green to Limmo Peninsular.

The vessel is seen here at the AST Terminal at the Albert dock. It is loading building equipment and steel destined for Madagascar and La Réunion.

The bottom of the holds will be filled with this breakbulk cargo. Then the tweendecks that can be seen here stowed upright against the side of the hold, will be lowered. The tweendeck will be loaded up with roro cargo which is loaded through the stern ramp.

After discharging at La Réunion, the 1990 built vessel will proceed to a beach in India to be scrapped. This is the last time we will see this vessel.

Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) Chief Executive Officer Eric Green outlined the port’s growth opportunities and plans for the future during today’s sold-out State of the Port address. Hosted by the Propeller Club of the United States – Port of Jacksonville, the event provided updates on JAXPORT’s major projects, business growth, and supply chain trends impacting Northeast Florida’s maritime industry to a crowd of nearly 400 transportation and logistics professionals.

“The solution to the nation’s port congestion problem—is right here in this room,” Green told attendees. “As the industry looks to combat everything from truck capacity issues to labor and equipment challenges, protecting the supply chain is a global priority. That’s where Jacksonville’s modern deepwater seaport comes in.”

During his keynote address, Green announced that JAXPORT’s single biggest growth initiative, deepening the Jacksonville shipping channel to 47 feet, is on track to be completed through JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal as early as May 2022. The project includes the construction of a turning basin to allow larger ships to turn at Blount Island berths.

In coordination with deepening, more than $100 million in berth enhancements will be complete this summer to enable the SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal at Blount Island to simultaneously accommodate two post-Panamax ships. By the end of 2022, Blount Island terminal operator SSA Atlantic will welcome three new eco-friendly container cranes and complete the first 20 acres of a modernization project to enable the facility to accommodate more containers.

At the Dames Point Marine Terminal, Ceres Terminals has committed $15 million in private investment in cargo handling equipment and systems. Investments continue at the Talleyrand Marine Terminal, where the port is working on expanding its footprint and capabilities.

“Under Eric’s leadership as CEO, JAXPORT has attracted more than a billion dollars in investment over the last five years, including multiple public-private partnerships,” said JAXPORT Board Chair Wendy Hamilton. “These investments provide a modern deepwater seaport that will continue to provide supply chain solutions for the nation and bring new jobs and business opportunity to our community.”

“In our business, we deal through partnerships, and JAXPORT for us has been an amazing partnership,” said Southeast Toyota Distributors Group Vice President Casey Gunnell. “They are a business-forward organization that’s looking to not only support us but help us grow in this community.”

To build on the port’s position as one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports, JAXPORT is expanding a primary Ro/Ro (rolling cargo) berth at Blount Island to dock two vessels from a single berth. The $36 million project will take about 24 months to complete.

In lockstep with growth strategies outlined in its strategic master plan, JAXPORT is also exploring options to build its breakbulk capacity. “Some ports have shifted away from breakbulk; we are embracing it,” Green said.

Mary Baer, anchor of Jacksonville television station WJXT-TV, moderated a “Why Jacksonville” panel discussion featuring JAXUSA Partnership President Aundra Wallace and leaders from global companies who have grown their businesses in and around JAXPORT.

Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited JAXPORT to announce that Singapore-based ocean carrier Sea Lead has selected Jacksonville as a port of call on its first-ever US East Coast service. Jacksonville is the last port of call on the rotation connecting Jacksonville to three ports in China and one in South Korea. This new service is an expansion of Sea Lead’s U.S. West Coast operations and showcases the advantages JAXPORT’s uncongested berths and efficiency offers worldwide ocean carriers.

In fiscal year 2021, a record-setting 1.4 million containers moved through JAXPORT, maintaining its position as Florida’s largest container port and one of the top 10 container ports in the nation. JAXPORT is also one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports, moving more than 616,000 vehicles last year.
