In the quiet of the night, when all you can hear is your stomach growl, why not?

A 16 character LCD display in all its 4-bit power. Powered by an Arduino One and connected to what is called a breadboard. The cables you see are needed, but the blue led was there just to fill an empty spot in the center of the image.

In theory, we should not see the darker squares. There is a potentiometer to the side (out of frame) that can be used to fix that. However, for the sake of the image, here I decided to leave them there.

Sure, the display may be a bit bigger than the coin, but the message will fit right in there and still have some extra space :)

(also, most components you see there are smaller than the coin, including the cables, the led and the two resistors almost completely out of focus)

Happy Monday everyone!

Nothing like a well baked croissant and coffee in the morning. This is all I need to start my day, any ol' day. Shot at 72 East 1st Street in New York City's East Village neighborhood.

HOBBY: Computing, as in building computers, repairing, and any electronics. Never toss an electronic or computing component even if deader than the proverbial doornail. My husband is the expert. I’m trying to learn.

WHAT: Light-emitting diodes (LED) pre-cut (or before sizing) in/on a breadboard. Yes, shallow depth of field. By choice!

FOCAL POINT: Third from left LED in front row.

LIGHTING: Components are in a soft box lighted on two sides by standing Photogenic StudioMax lights triggered by an off-camera SB 800 strobe at 1/64 power.

SIZE: The breadboard (base with holes) measures 2 in / 5.08 cm), and with the negative/unused space equals about 2.5 in / 6.35 cm.

The height including negative/unused space measures 1.75 in / 4.45 cm.

Thanks for looking!

There was a whole story going on about how Gerry was once Chairman of the Board. Charlie was not buying into it.

What amuses me is how long this went on for.

Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday

Sit down, kick back, and relax.

Happiness is... for me creating things out of scrap wood. This little fellow started life as a broken hardwood breadboard and hopefully he'll make someone as happy as I have been to make him :-)

Happy Smile on Saturday (HSoS) everyone 😄

Halloumi salad Sandwich for lunch today. The weather was too bad to get another photo.

Yet another batch of mince pies needed, to combat further unexplained disappearances — honestly, they're hardly around long enough to photograph. I think the house must be haunted — the trail of pastry crumbs, leading to me, can't possibly be relevant...

The final variation on a theme. This time as well as my 'Balsamic Pickled Shallots' I made, there's now a bowl of my 'Pickled Eggs' too ! Neither lasted that long after I took this shot !

or at least the remains for it..

On the bread board this morning, we have.... crumbs, knives and the left overs of lashings of butter..

Saturday Self Challenge: Beginletter B, in vierkant formaat

Saturday Self Challenge: Starts with a B, in square format

Bread (wholewheat bread), bread knife, breadboard. In the background an old bag of flour. This bag was used in my grandfather’s bakery.

Note the bread is also nearly in a square. This is because it is baked in a ‘bus’ (kind of baking tin) with a lid.

Going for a nice rustic rural farmhouse sort of scene — a toffee loaf cake fresh from the oven and crabapple blossom from the tree in my garden.

Prepared for three valves. The droplet controller on a breadboard is placed on the right. Camera/lens combination for droplet shooting: Sony A7II with wireless flash controller. Lens Samyang 1.4/85mm and extension tubes for macro usage. Wireless flashes are placed in the backround and on the left. Boyle-Mariotte bottle for feeding with water is placed on top.

This Kenwood Chef is over 60 years old but instead of retiring, it has just been resprayed and refurbished ready for the next working stage of its life.

These old Kenwoods were built to last and designed to cope with a busy kitchen.

Incredibly, a lot of spares are still available from specialist suppliers.

This photo probably needs a bit of explanation.

2020 has been a challenging year for those, like myself, who work in the UK creative industries. To put food on the table I have done all sorts of new and interesting jobs.

This week I have been working in the R&D department of Inspired Audio, a loudspeaker manufacture based in Derbyshire.

This makeshift 'Breadboard' (the electrical type!) feels like an appropriate way to bring in the #Breadandbutter.

Not for the faint hearted.

Self-surgery is the act of performing a surgical procedure on oneself. It can be an act taken in extreme circumstances out of necessity, an attempt to avoid embarrassment, legal action, or financial costs, or a rare manifestation of a psychological disorder.

Yubitsume (指詰め, "finger shortening") or otoshimae is a Japanese ritual to atone for offences to another, a way to be punished or to show sincere apology and remorse to another, by means of amputating portions of one's own little finger.

- - - And just for interest it turns out that "Rocialle" that made some of my kitchenware also make surgical instruments including scalpels.

While taking this photo I couldn't get the song out of my head. For those of you who haven't had the delight ;) of listening to this song by The Newbeats, their 1965 (one and only) hit! Here is a link

ATSH: Enough

This is an analog sequencer I started after I had ordered some pink and blue LEDs for valentine's day. It doesn't make sound, but puts out a cycle of changing resistances (12...41...0...108...12...41...0...108, etc.) that can be used to control a simple frequency generator, synthesizers, or even be used as an input sensor for Pure Data, MAX/MSP, etc. via an Arduino (or Dorkboard). There are 12 knobs to set resistances/notes, and one for tempo. The other knobs and output jack connect to a simple synth breadboarded on the inside. I added them just to make interfacing a bit easier, but they are separate from any functions of the sequencer. Sorry for the small photo!

Crazy Tuesday: Hearts

I'm getting a lot of use out of that Dollar Store deck of cards I bought (and mangled) for the House of Cards challenge....

More efforts at still life using some of my kitchenalia / props etc.

I made this rustic bread by baking it in the oven in a Dutch oven today. No kneading involved.

It's that time of year again, as the wheel turns, the ears of wheat stand golden in the fields ready for the harvest.

Marc worked hard on this RFID reader circuit for our Music Hack Day Boston project. Our goal is to create music using the data from RFID cards, a Leaf Labs Maple (an Arduino-like microcontroller), and Max/MSP.

Had a delivery of Cheese from Quicke's in Devon, I put this together in my shed while enjoying a few bottles of Hallet's Cider ...

A joint effort today. I thought I'd have a go at some product photography, so what better product to feature than a home-made wholemeal loaf, baked by Mrs Palmer?

The task is to explore the house, inside and out, finding new ways of looking at the familiar things that surround me every day, and literally shedding new light on them - hopefully producing a worthwhile photograph.

Might not be one every day, but we'll see.

The 5th Symphony by Beethoven

(pardon, je recommencerai plus ;-))

This painting was done for my daughter's tenth birthday, and was inspired by a beautiful photo that I saw on Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/anna_greece/381662926/in/set-721575...

It's painted in acrylics on an old breadboard with gold leaf. The quote is by Khalil Gibran

For October: A month in 31 pictures.

Well, it's brioche actually.

Meant to get more of the knife handle in the frame, not just the tiniest bit on the end, but I got carried away with the overall composition and focus and didn't notice until I uploaded. No time to re-take it...live and learn!

Many years ago I built a box housing switches, indicator LEDs, and a variable speed clocking trigger that I could use to make and test TTL logic circuits for a college class (see last Monday's photo of the breadboard to which this would be connected).

This is a row of indicator lights from that box. The row is approximately 3"/75mm from end-to-end but the width of the photo at the subject (in focus) LED is about half that.

Various parts from my electronics box laid out "knolling" style on my breadboard.

Anyone familiar with breadboards will immediately see that this "circuit" doesn't do anything. The breadboard is just holding/aligning the parts.

Seen here are a couple capacitors, three resistors

four jumpers and three red LED lights surrounding a National Semiconductor LM3909N monolithic oscillator. The LM3909N was a special purpose IC specifically designed to flash an LED using very low power so it could run a year or more on one "C" battery.

Standard DIP pin spacing is 0.1" making this photo approximately 1.4" across.
