This was November 2014. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to photograph these trees again this season. The Park was flooded and closed the past two autumns. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 11/2014
I caught this crew on my way into the park one morning last week. When I first sat down with my camera, it was just the two fawns. Mama soon came out of the woods to keep an eye on me. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 6/2020

I ran across this Yellow-crowned Night-Heron while visiting Brazos Bend State Park last month. It wasn’t the snappiest looking specimen in the park that day but I thought he was in a pretty nice setting so I took a few shots.

When water levels get low, we see stilts at Brazos Bend. I took this last weekend before Hurricane Hannah's outer bands gave the area some rain. Hopefully the stilts are still in the area. Cropped more than I like. 7/2020

This was last week at the Brazos Bend State Park Owl nest. The adult bird is perched in a tree adjacent to the nest tree. The little ones would soon be dining on what looks like some kind of duck? Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 2/2023.
I made a trip out to Brazos Bend State Park this morning in hopes of seeing the Wood Storks and Bald Eagles that were hanging around Elm Lake this weekend and dipped on the storks but had pretty decent looks at one of the eagles. There wasn’t too much unusual around until just as I was heading out and this Philadelphia Vireo made a brief appearance. It was a fun way to end my visit.

I watched his heron in the morning light for about 15 minutes. I have a few wide shots, and a few close ones. This is the largest bird species in the park, and an amazing hunter. If they can grab it, they eat it. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. - 7/2022.
This Common Yellowthroat was a nice little surprise during a recent visit to Brazos Bend State Park. I frequently see them at the park but they usually have about zero interest in posing for a photo.

Yesterday, a park volunteer directed us to a location where he had heard the distinctive "chirp" of gator hatchlings. We went to the location, found mama gator, and heard little gators chirping. After a few minutes, the little ones started to come out of the foliage and show themselves. We counted at least 20. These two decided to climb on top of mom. For those familiar with Brazos Bend, this is on the right side of the 40 Acre trail between the trail head, and the tower (as you walk towards the tower). Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 9/2019.
The weather this afternoon at Brazos Bend State Park was strangely pleasant. It was one of those days when it looked like it would start raining at any moment but it never really got around to it aside from an occasional light drizzle. It was an incredibly peaceful afternoon and the fall colors were vivid. The White Ibises must have found it peaceful as well as they allowed us a very close approach for photography.

Green Herons are pretty common down here all summer, but they seem to become more abundant late August/early September. Most leave for the winter. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 8/2017
A few months earlier this stilt would have been wading. Lack of rain turned the pond into mud flats. I’m hopeful recent rains improved the situation.

Any day I see a Pileated Woodpecker is a good day and to get one in flight; that’s extra special. This one was from a visit to Brazos Bend SP in early November.

The American Bittern is one of my favorite SE Texas winter birds. They do know how to blend in. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 1/2021
Yesterday I was photographing ducks, when this anhinga swam up and posed. Over the past month, he/she has been a good subject for me, and others. I wanted to get something other than the classic anhinga portrait, so I moved in close with my longer lens and tried this shot. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 1/2021

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of going out with a couple of friends to Brazos Bend State Park. As usual the park did not disappoint and we had no trouble finding lots of interesting photographic subjects. This Green Heron, however, was the standout for me. Not so much because it was the most beautiful bird we saw (though they are quite pretty) but because we had the chance to observe one of its interesting behaviors. We watched (and clicked away) while this bird periodically manipulated a wriggling insect on the surface of the water in order to attract fish. The fish weren’t biting during our encounter but it is always amazing to see how smart birds are. It didn’t hurt that the setting was nice and pretty as well.

Migrating wood storks periodically roost at Brazos Bend, and yesterday I was lucky to catch a few. The bad news was there was very little light. The good news was, had the sun been out, this shot would have been directly into it. A little kid passing by while I was shooting called them "spooky Halloween birds". I can see it.

My beloved Brazos Bend State Park is currently closed because of Brazos River flooding, and won't open until sometime in June. This seems to have become an annual, or multi-annual event.
Last summer, this very cooperative night heron gave me some pretty close shots. This is a rather common summer bird for us, but I never get tired of seeing them. That big beak is well suited for catching, and eating crawfish.
I look forward to getting back into the Park.

Yesterday afternoon I spent some time out at Brazos Bend State Park. The weather looked threatening but it was still a wonderful visit. The rain held off until it was pretty much too dark for photography. This Anhinga was one of many cooperative subjects at the park.

Here's a closer look at the Bittern I posted yesterday. He let me sit on the ground right next to him. Sometimes they don't let you anywhere near, other times they don't seem to care. Perhaps his hunting was more important than worrying about me. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 2/2018

While walking around 40 Acre Lake yesterday morning I heard some intense chip notes coming from the woods and decided to try to see what the source of the noise was. After several minutes of searching I finally spotted this Ovenbird walking around on the ground bobbing its tail up and down. It took a VERY long time to get an unobstructed photo but I was pretty happy that I invested the effort and time. Not exactly a bird you expect to encounter at the park in January!
