Two great-horned owl chicks in Brazos Bend State Park

Brazos Bend State Park is well known for its alligators. As a state park, it contains a lot of wildlife, and it is not a zoo. This shows how close one can get to the park's star attraction.

Approximately 12-ft. (3.7 m) long alligator beside Elm Lake in Brazos Bend State Park. This one is surely a male, as females rarely - if ever - get this big.

Man....it was perfect for a Texas spring Day! A wonderful outing to Brazos Bend State park with Luz....many cool things seen from animals here to celestial bodies in space. It was a great time to shed city worries. I loved it!

These dragonflies are present almost year round at Brazos Bend State Park but are more common during the warmer months. This one was beside one of the small fishing piers at Elm Lake.

While walking the path between Elm Lake and 40 Acre Lake in Brazos Bend SP, this adult alligator came out of the water on the north side and crossed our path to the south side.

This praying mantis seems to be licking itself as if it is grooming. It turns out that they actually do groom themselves:

I had no idea that any insect would do that.

This guy held this pose for about 5 minutes without moving, so I left him to his hunt. I came back by about 1 hour later and he was still there posing. That is what I call patience!

This is another angle of the gator posted a few days ago. The sun was out for this one. The other was taken as a cloud passed.

I thought it was interesting that all these dump trucks had parked in a row like this. The construction site appears to be for a new apartment complex.

This snowy egret was wading around, scraping the bottom of the pond with its feet and watching for what turned up. (The swirling water is visible beneath the base of its neck.) It was pretty efficient at nabbing small invertebrates.

Seems like humans aren't the only ones ready to do some serious chill-axing (chilling while relaxing) over the three day weekend. Saw this young one draped over a log in Elm Lake at Bayou Bend State Park today. In fact, I saw four gators today - one teeny tiny baby, an adolescent, a young adult and then big Momma who cuts through the water like a torpedo.

It was supposed to rain and thunderstorm all day today. And it didn't! What a gift!
