This Swamp Sparrow was one of many that I encountered during a recent visit to Brazos Bend State Park. This individual was foraging at the edge of 40 Acre Lake when I unintentionally flushed it while trying to get into position to photograph another bird. The perch he chose was so nice that I completely forgot about my previous subject.

New Horseshoe Lake was formed by the cutting off of a bend in Big Creek, which flows just out of sight to the right of the image. To the left, also out of sight, is Old Horseshoe Lake, an older lake formed by the same process.

Old Horseshoe is mostly dry, although it occasionally catches some water during heavy rains. It is gradually turning into a meadow, and the same fate awaits New Horseshoe.

Great blue heron tiptoes around a small alligator on a small island in 40 Acre Lake, Brazos Bend State Park

I looked over my shoulder from watching a little blue heron and found this bird just behind me with a big crawfish. Fortunately, turning myself and my camera around didn't spook him.

This dude is definitely the funkiest caterpillar I've ever seen.

This photo was ranked #63 on Explore!!!

For some reason this guy reminds me of Dr. Funkenstein.

This spring there were a few YCNH nests visible from the spillway trail at Brazos Bend State Park. The site lines were not too good, but I made a few images. I like night herons and was really happy to see them nesting at the Park.

Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) on the edge of a hiking trail at Brazos Bend State Park.

When they open their mouths like this, it's usually for thermal regulation. This one was quite calm in spite of a number of hikers who were passing by.

Nutria are semi-aquatic, herbivorous rodents. Native to South America, they were introduced to the US by the fur trade.

Because they damage marshlands, programs exist to control the population. Here at Brazos Bend, the alligators do their best to keep the nutria number down.

Until this one looked right at me, I don't think I had ever noticed the orange teeth.

Someone sitting beside the lake pointed this large bullfrog out to me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have seen it. I had heard some earlier, but this one wasn't sounding off. It seemed a bit early for that to me, but maybe not. They'll be mating (or trying to) before too much longer.

This ring-necked duck is paddling pretty fast, probably in an effort to catch a nearby female. Either that, or the beer is getting cold.

Botaurus lentiginosus

Here is another shot from Brazos Bend yesterday. On my way back to my car I saw at least four of them and caught this photo about 10 minutes before sunset. I thought the position of the bird was pretty interesting making this my favorite bittern shot of the day.

Yesterday morning we found a large concentration of wading birds and gators in one corner of Elm Lake at Brazos Bend State Park. There was quite a feeding frenzy on some kind of small fish. It was a pretty crazy scene!
