This gator has a visible tag attached to its tail, possibly to indicate that it has been counted as part of a census of alligators in Brazos Bend State Park.

This anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) seems to be making an announcement...

On this particular trip, we spotted 10 of these well camouflaged birds. It's easy to look right at them but not see them.

This fellow is a regular winter visitor to Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. Others have made some beautiful tight portraits of this bird. Fingers crossed. 11/2017

This is what December looks like in SE Texas. We have seasons, but the changes are subtle compared to up north.

An American bittern with a large bullfrog

I strongly suspect the bird wasn't carrying the bullfrog around simply to transport it to a place where it wanted to go.

I'm posting a few more images of this guy to do him justice. My first post a few days ago had him in a rather silly pose. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 5/2025

Yesterday I spent sunrise to sunset at Brazos Bend. Sunrise was buried under heavy cloud cover, but the evening sky was quite a treat. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 12/2019

At Brazos Bend, Gators wander freely. They are joined by snakes and fire ants and poisoned ivy and---. So, you need to watch it.

Most people get this, but not everyone. The craziest I have witnessed was a guy telling his his little child to touch a gators tail for a picture. Several of us protested, and he angrily moved on.

This pic was taken from the trail, with my iPhone. 3/2020

It was a nice surprise to come across these two. I've seen young great-horned owls at the park several times over the years, but this is my first look at young barred owls. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 5/2025

Watching and listening.

I thought this looked a little comical with the left side owlet watching its sibling spinning it's head. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 5/2025.

I visited these birds three times in the past month, but never when there was much light. Regardless, they have been a treat, and I have way too many pics of them :) On this last visit they were on a much higher branch than in the past. As a result, they tended to look over rather than at me. I also got the white sky bg rather than greenery. There's a good chance they will have fledged by the time I get back to the location. FYI the second owlet was on a separate branch. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas 3/22/2020

A young - a little over a year old - alligator appears to be pondering its life, the world, and all that's in it. Or it may just be thinking about lunch.

Or it might not be thinking at all...

But not *that* precarious. These black-crowned night herons are well adapted to perching on branches such as this while they try to spy a passing fish or crawfish in the water just below them.

This was a few days before Christmas. I arrived at the park before sunrise, but ended up watching the sun come up from behind the locked entrance gate. I made a few images from the outside looking in. The gate was opened about 15-20 min. later. It would have been a shame to have spent that time sitting in my car.
