Shot at my home on Vishu (Sowing festival of Kerala, India) day. The framed photograph seen in the background is the very famous Mother Goddess worshiped in Calcutta (Kolkata) called Calcutta Kali

Way back in 1977, while browsing in a second hand shop in Brecon, I came across and bought this beautiful heavy brass Cambrian miners lamp. Within a few seconds I recognised its deep Welsh heritage, thanks to the well-worn engraving of the three feathers – among other things the emblem of the Prince of Wales.

This spurred me on to more research, and I soon discovered that the lamp was manufactured by E Thomas & Williams Ltd of Aberdare, which began business in 1860. The lamp has a milled tank and internal grid for protection against explosion, and weighs 1.37kg.

The brass label, attached to the lamp funnel with two copper rivets, reads ‘Lancaster Steam Coal Collieries’ at the top, and ‘Cwmtillery’ at the bottom. The large unique lettering in the centre reads ‘No 1 Pit 441’.

That refers to the first shaft at Cwmtillery Colliery near Abertillery, South Wales, which was sunk in 1843. Lancaster Steam Coal Collieries (originally Lancaster Spier & Co) owned the colliery, which by 1918 employed 2,760 men. It closed in 1982.

In the 42 years that I've owned the lamp, I can't begin to imagine how many litres of Brasso I've used to keep it in gleaming condition... but it's been worth it!

This traditional hanging decorative oil-wick brass lamp is widely used in the South Indian state of Kerala. This variation of a religious lamp is used both at homes and in temples of worship.

Nilavilakku is a lighted bell metal traditional lamp used commonly in Kerala, South India. Nilam in the Malayalam language means ground and Vilakku means lamp. Nilam and vilakku have exactly the same meaning in the older cognate Tamil language.

Headlamp detail, 1906 Pungs-Finch Finch Limited Roadster. (Should be viewed large.) The brass on these very early automobiles is simply stunning; being able to see several of the cars at close range was a special treat for me. The headlamps on this Finch Limited are particularly striking.

I've sacrificed some detail in the smaller file size posted to Flickr, but when viewed in the light box, I can still read the information on the copper plate above the lens of the lamp.

Some of the Finch Limited lettering on the readiator can be read in the reflections in the left-hand lamp. This is said to be the only Finch automobile produced (made before Finch left the firm). Of greater interest, perhaps, is that this car had 4-cylinder engine with hemispherical combustion chambers and over 600 cid. All the brass on the car is simply stunning, and the rich, deep shade of red on the wheels and body behind the cowl is, I think, very nice.Seeing each of the many old cars at the Gilmore Museum, at Greenfield Village, and elsewhere on our recent trip was great for me, but there was a special thrill from seeing some of the grand old Brass-era cars. Perhaps that is due, in part, to the fact that these were gone from the roads before the time of my earliest memory, so that they never had the chance to become in any way ordinary to me. And, of course, these vehicles are simply very impressive. Flickr friend Steve Brown (sjb4photos) was our very able and amiable "tour director" for the cars and SE Michigan countryside June 15-18.

This pretty floral style reading lamp casting a honeyed glow across a tabletop is French and made of brass. Featuring its original ruffled glass shade of cream glass, the lamp’s stand is perhaps its most interesting feature. Decorated with vine leaves, the sinewy vine holding the glass shade “flower” is held aloft by a little hand whose fingers grip the vine very tightly. It is very Art Nouveau in its form and design, and has its original Edwardian flex of brown and cream woven cotton.

A Nair (a Hindu community in Kerala) wedding in progress (at the auditorium of the Azhakodi Devi Temple, Kozhikode or Calicut). The bridegroom and bride are seated with flower garlands round their necks while the priest (standing wth back to camera) performs the religious rites. The flower decorations and the arrays of brass oil lamps, small and large, were awesome!
