The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is an 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch in Berlin, and one of the best-known landmarks of Germany. It is built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.
The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin and Germany. It is located west of the city center at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which Berlin was once entered. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to "Unter den Linden", the renowned boulevard of linden trees which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation. Today, it is regarded as one of Europe's most famous landmarks.

You can see Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory at the top of the gate. She stands in a chariot, drawn by four horses, the Quadriga. The primary name of the new Brandenburg Gate was "Peace Gate" and the goddess in the Quadriga was originally Eirene, the goddess of peace. Only with the victory over Napoleon, the goddess of peace turned into the goddess of victory.

ENG: A visit to the Brandenburg Gate in the late evening and with very few tourists. So visiting the landmark is fun even as a local. So I managed to get a panoramic shot that also meets my expectations.

From 1961 to 1989 the Brandenburg Gate came to symbolize divided Germany, as the Berlin Wall shut off access to the gate for both East and West Germans. It served as the backdrop for U.S. Pres. Ronald Reagan's famous 1987 speech in which he entreated the Soviet leader, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
Built between 1788 and 1791 by Prussian King Frederick William II as a key entry point to the city of Berlin, Brandenburg Gate was topped off with a statue known as the “Quadriga,” which depicted a statue of the goddess of victory driving a chariot pulled by four horses.

The photo is there, with its name, to remind me of the exact date, and also the time: it was 9.35 AM on March 21, 2020. I took a walk up to the Brandenburg Gate. It was the first weeks of Covid-19. The city was empty, ghostly. The square in front of the Gate, the Pariser Platz, looked surreal. Two policemen patrolled the area, a photographer took the opportunity to shoot the monument with no signs of life around. As never before, as never, I hope, I'll see it again.
