From the session: "The Neuroscience of Art:
What are the Sources of Creativity and Innovation?" (February 21 to 26, 2015)
---
In recent years, there have been an increasing number of scientific investigations into art, exploring what actually happens in the brain during the creative process. Most of these collaborations have been based in neuroscience and psychological approaches to how art is perceived, produced and created, with music the main focus of studies carried out to date. These studies have yielded important new information that relates to a very basic fact of human biology: all behavior, even that as complex as creativity, can be linked to brain function. Building on this fundamental linkage, the neurobiology of art promises to yield exciting new insights as this research field evolves. Creative behavioral patterns are likely to be a critical component for developing the neurological capacity for innovation.
This Salzburg Global program represents a pioneering step to establish a neutral international forum to discuss state-of-the-art findings from a cross-disciplinary perspective, prioritize future research, and expand creative opportunities for learning, innovation and collaboration. While much research is taking place in various national and regional settings, more global dialogue is needed between specialist silos in order to catalyze knowledge exchange around the results, implications and potential practical applications of new cutting-edge research.

I enjoyed this exercise and will do it a number of times to try different starting points. I think it's a bit like thinking through an assembly line, where to start and finish with minimal back-tracking and maximum efficiency. One must get the mapping brain functioning I reckon.
By the end, Kermit was feeling so down in the dumps about looking like a troll that I had to include a thumbnail ...which woke me up to my own misperceived perspective in drawing the green tea box. A-ha!

The Black Sleep (1956)
dai.ly/x14wrtw Full Feature on Daily motion
England, 1872. The night before he is to be hanged for a murder he did not commit, young Dr. Gordon Ramsey is visited in his cell by his old mentor, eminent surgeon Sir Joel Cadmund. Cadmund offers to see that Ramsey gets a proper burial and gives him a sleeping powder to get him through the night, which Ramsey takes, unaware it is really an East Indian drug, "nind andhera" ("the black sleep"), which induces a deathlike state of anesthesia. Pronounced dead in his cell, he is turned over to Cadmund, who promptly revives him and takes him to his home in a remote abbey. Cadmund explains he believes Ramsey is innocent and needs his talents to help him in an project, which he is reluctant to immediately discuss further. In fact, Cadmund's wife lies in a coma from a deep-seated brain tumor, and he is attempting to find a safe surgical route to its site by experimenting on the brains of others, whom Ramsey comes to learn are alive during the process, anesthetized by the "black sleep", and are taken to a hidden recovery room in the abbey from which few emerge, though they still live...
- Written by Rich Wannen
Old-fashioned as it is, however, The Black Sleep still gets the job done at least as well as most of the movies to which it hearkens back. Most notably, it crystallized a vague sense I’ve had for some time now that it’s too bad Rathbone got pigeonholed so early on as Sherlock Holmes. He had a commanding elegance about him akin to that later displayed by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and which nobody else on the 30’s and 40’s horror scene could match. Lionel Atwill and John Carradine came close on occasion, but Atwill was always a little too foppish and Carradine a little too homespun to play the depraved Old World nobleman with Rathbone’s authority; neither of them would have been up to the challenge of Tower of London’s Richard III, for example. As Joe Cadman, Rathbone simultaneously prefigures the Cushing Frankenstein, and hints at all the brilliant mad movie scientists that might have been if only Rathbone hadn’t been so busy chasing Nazi agents all over the English moors during the years of the second Hollywood horror boom. He might even have injected some unwonted class into a Monogram or PRC production! The rest of the cast doesn’t quite match up to the top-billed star, but most of those who are required to do any actual acting (which is to say, not Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi, or Lon Chaney Jr.) acquit themselves respectably well. Another thing The Black Sleep does right is to incorporate a bit of defensible real-world science into the mad variety more familiar from movies of its type. Much of the film’s horror stems from the certainty that attempting such delicate neurological investigations with the clumsy and invasive techniques of the late 19th century really would produce monstrous derangement's of brain function, even if these specific symptoms (John Carradine’s character is convinced that he’s Bohemond of Taranto— the hell?) are not always especially plausible. Finally, Udo the Gypsy, who in most horror films of this era would be nothing but a comic relief character, is portrayed in much too sinister a light to become as irritating as one might anticipate. His clowning creates more unease than anything else, for it is plainly but a cover for a complete absence of conscience. All in all, The Black Sleep represents a commendable effort to bring some seriousness of purpose back into the gothic mad scientist movie, which had grown silly enough on its own over the years that it hadn’t really needed Abbott and Costello to poke fun at it.

Brain Awareness Week:
BAW On Facebook:

As part of #BrainWeek, the Wellcome Institute is giving away a free
app to both teach folk more about how the brain and memory work, and
also to gather data for research scientists. That means it is a
citizen science / health literacy / neuroscience GAME.
I just downloaded it, and haven't gotten very far into it, but I am
excited about the idea of it more than the implementation, at least to
start. It seems a bit boring, but I really really want this to work,
so I will probably play more of it. I want to both do some brain
training (and this seems like it would work for that also), as well as
donating (hopefully useful) information to science.
In their words:
"As you might have guessed, by playing the games, you will actually
become part of a giant scientific study! With your permission your
game scores will be sent to us anonymously, for further analysis in
our lab. Then, as the results flood in, we’ll be able to use your
scores to investigate the function of the human brain.
Each game looks at a different aspect of brain function: how good we
are at stopping ourselves from doing something, how good our short
term memory is, how quickly we can take in visual objects, whether we
prefer to take risks or stay safe, and how these choices affect our
happiness."

Last week when I came home I found a box of Californian walnuts waiting for me. It was a pleasant surprise and it had been packed very nicely. The walnuts were in a wooden box and along with it I found a book titled “California Walnuts Nutrition and Health” by Geetu Amarnani, a Nutritionist and Lifestyle Management Consultant.
DSC07155
I found the book to be very interesting as I got to know about the benefits of walnuts and various recipes and preparations through which I can incorporate walnuts in my daily diet.
DSC07156
According to Dr. H.K Chopra an ounce i.e. 28 g of walnuts a day keep many ailments like cardiac attacks at bay. They reduce LDL bad cholesterol and give 2.5 gms of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) per serving and are the richest source of omega -3 fatty acids which are not manufactured by our body and obtained though diet.
DSC07158
Walnuts contain other minerals and vitamins like magnesium and phosphorus, which are important minerals in energy metabolism, bone health and regulating heart rhythm. Walnuts are a rich source of antioxidants as compared to any other nut. Not just that, Californian walnuts are delicious and eating 1.5 ounce per day promotes heart health, raises HDL cholesterol, decreases blood pressure, and improves the arterial function so as a result making them an essential food for reducing cardiovascular risk. Moreover research has proved that incorporating the right type of fat especially the type found in walnuts is important and helpful to people with diabetes as walnuts help in managing the metabolic syndrome which increases the risk for coronary disease, stroke, liver and kidney diseases and type-2 diabetes.
DSC07159
According to Geetu Amarnani an ounce i.e. a handful of walnuts provide 4 g of protein and 2 g of fiber and fiber provides a feeling of fullness which promotes weight management, lowers cholesterol and improves blood glucose levels.
DSC07160
Walnuts are also loaded with omega-3s, which makes them a good brain food as the brain needs high-quality fats like omega-3s to function properly.
DSC07227
According to researchers, eating walnuts as a part of a Mediterranean diet was associated with better memory and brain function and the antioxidants present in walnuts may help counteract age-related cognitive decline and reduce the risk of neurogenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s.
DSC07237
The taste, the flavour and nutritional value makes it ideal to be used in salads and recipes like walnut halwa, chicken kofta, seekh kebabs, various puddings, cakes and desserts and I will enjoy eating walnuts more now that I have known all the nutritional and health benefits of them. I will also try to have walnuts as an anytime snack as now I know walnuts are naturally gluten, sodium and cholesterol free.

We all know lockdown has a negative impact on our well being but what is it doing to the brain function of those who don’t work? With few things to remember or plan for our brains will get lazy and slow down. Keeping our brain sharp is just as important as keeping our body physically fit.
I feel it’s time to do a few more puzzles.

Ottmar: I know, the resemblance is uncanny, but this is not Jolly!
Jolly: Ha! That's a she-ep!
This morning mom went to the doctor to get a prescription. The ten minute walk from home to the health center is always an adventure. Mom always takes her camera with her because you never know what you're going to come across! :o)
Just as soon as we're like owls abiding by the Land of the Couch Time Zone, we may also have to wake up early in the morning to interact with what we call "The Real World". Because of this, and also because Dad always finishes things the last minute before either delivering or leaving on a trip, we've become experts in sleep management.
Here are our tricks:
1. Sleep on a latex mattress, and turn it around once a month. You get double the rest, or rest the same in half the time.
2. When you go to sleep, or when you can take a short rest period (maybe waiting for some process to finish), try to make your mind go blank. Even if you don't actually fall asleep, you will feel rested (Ottmar: Daddy and Jolly seem to be specially good at this!).
3. Set an alarm to sleep for either 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, or 12 hours. Those periods catch you in the middle of the lighter sleep periods, so you wake up fresh and feeling relaxed. Waking up after 3 or 6 hours will leave you groggy all day!
4. Sleep 12 or more hours whenever you can. That gives you "sleep credit" that you can use during the next few days, if need be.
5. If traveling by car, sleep whatever you can before leaving, even if it is only half an hour. You can catch up on your sleep while driving, because that's a low-level brain function like breathing or heartbeat, but that only works if you keep your eyes open, which is hard to do if they're sore!
6. Caffeine is your friend :o)

Alcool lead, even social consumption, to brain dysfunction. I posted this photo to show a huge social lie. Even in poetry, art and sacred books vine is seen like an elixir, like an arhetipal drink and many poets said "like wine are your lips my love" and things like that, But the scientific truth is that the state created, euforic state of a glass of wine si in fact due to an intoxication with a poison which in great quantities can lead to death.

What are the Sources of Creativity and Innovation?" (February 21 to 26, 2015)

Animal Equality released disturbing scenes of animal suffering filmed at a Simmons Farm Raised Catfish slaughterhouse located in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Simmons, which kills 21,000 fish catfish per day (animals who are raised in the company’s intensive confinement ponds), is one of the largest USDA inspected catfish slaughterhouses in the U.S
. The fish slaughtered by the company go to national restaurant chains Cracker Barrel and Captain D’s, as well as grocery stores Kroger, Save A Lot, and Piggly Wiggly.
PROLONGED SUFFERING: The investigation revealed fish kept out of water for prolonged periods—up to an hour—before they were finally beheaded. While fish pass through an electrical stunning device during processing, many regain mobility and begin gasping and moving their fins long before they are finally decapitated. Rejected catfish, mudfish, and turtles were removed from production lines and placed in buckets without water. Later they are placed onto a conveyor and transported to a macerator where they were ground up alive.
ILLEGAL ANIMAL ABUSE: Our investigator filmed disturbing scenes, including serious legal violations. Hidden-camera footage and eyewitness statements reveal:
- Hundreds of catfish regularly left out of water to slowly suffocate while workers went on breaks
- Conscious fish beheaded
- Turtles and rejected bycatch fish placed in buckets to be later ground up alive and, according to one employee, used as feed for Simmons’ still-growing catfish
- A turtle thrown onto a moving conveyor carrying severed catfish heads and then desperately trying to crawl in the opposite direction as they were carried towards the macerator
- Undersized, deformed, and parasite-scarred fish left alive in bins without water on the slaughter floor for hours
WHAT WE’RE SAYING: "Every day at Simmons’ slaughterhouse, thousands of catfish and countless other animals suffer,” said Sharon Núñez, President of Animal Equality. “Our investigation revealed persistent violations of Mississippi state law. Charges must be brought against Simmons to stop the ongoing abuse."
CALLS FOR CHARGES: We submitted evidence to the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office and County Prosecutor, detailing violations of Mississippi’s animal cruelty laws documented during the month-long investigation, including severe violations of the statutory prohibition on needless mutilations and cruel manners of “carrying” or “conveyance,” such as upon the conveyor equipment.
Mississippi law states that any person who is responsible for the care and handling of “living creatures,” including fish, may not cause those animals to be tortured or tormented, nor deprived of necessary sustenance (such as oxygen), whether by reason of intentional cruelty or mere neglectfulness. In causing hundreds of fish each day to be subjected to such treatment, Animal Equality maintains that Simmons management and owners should be held criminally liable under Mississippi anti-cruelty law.
FALSE ADVERTISING: Contrary to the investigator’s findings, Simmons claimed the fish are processed “within 30 minutes” and in a “swift [and] sterile” manner. Animal Equality filed complaints with state attorneys general in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, alleging that Simmons's false and misleading claims about its products and production practices constitute unfair or deceptive trade practices under those states’ consumer protection laws. In response, Simmons agreed to remove from its website the claim that the fish are processed “within 30 minutes.”
Animal Equality has filed complaints with state attorneys general in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, alleging that Simmons's false and misleading claims about its products and production practices constitute unfair or deceptive trade practices under those states’ consumer protection laws.
After slaughter, the dead catfish are inspected by the USDA and then go on to supply restaurants, grocery stores, and foodservice companies. Although Simmons’ products bear the federal agency’s official seal, there is no federal law mandating the humane slaughter of fish, so USDA inspectors do not monitor for animal cruelty.
FISH FEEL PAIN: Definitive scientific evidence details the ability and scope of fishes’ ability to experience pain and distress and, in particular, the difficulty of rendering them insensible during slaughter. A study published last year on the effects of commercial stunning methods on the brain function of catfish reviewed the ineffectiveness of electrical stunning. The study determined that catfish regain sensibility from a two-second stun within 30 seconds, and recover from a 10-second stun after 1.7 to 4.9 minutes. When catfish, like those at Simmons, are allowed to recover from the stun, they experience avoidable fear, anxiety, pain, suffering, and distress during their deaths.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: In addition to requesting that charges be filed against Simmons for animal cruelty violations, we are also asking for federal legislation that would protect fish under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, as aquatic animals are currently excluded from the Act’s protections. To that end, we have created a petition asking Congress to act. Please, let your voice be heard on behalf of these animals and add your names to those asking our representatives to prevent fish from being killed while still fully conscious. You can also make a difference for fish by sharing this investigation and leaving them off your plate. With your support, we can help these suffering animals and ensure future generations do not have to face the same brutal fate.

Honor God With Your Sexuality:
Our love makes it right
Spiritually weak people easily confuse lust with true love. Feeling a powerful attraction to someone else when you’re married, or to someone else who’s married, is a dangerous flirtation, not real love. People today seem to think that “being in love” justifies any and every action--cohabitation, dating married people, whatever. That powerful attraction must be obeyed and makes the sinful action “right.”
God calls it playing with fire.
"Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches
her will gounpunished." ~Proverbs 6:27-29
People caught up in the rush of sinful sexual attraction often suffer from cessation of brain function. That’s where you come in. Be a true friend. Tell them the truth. Help the people in your world come to respect marriage again. God bless

Steven Strogatz has a way of finding rhythm in places most people overlook. In his office at Malott Hall at Cornell, and later in the Space Sciences Building at the SPIF, that rhythm came alive in a simple but elegant experiment. Two small metronomes ticked on a shared platform, gradually aligning their beats as if discovering a shared pulse. Strogatz leaned in, smiling as the synchronization unfolded. The moment captured both his joy and his curiosity, the twin forces that have guided his life in mathematics.
For decades, Strogatz has explored the hidden order beneath the world’s apparent chaos. His work has spanned from the synchrony of fireflies flashing in unison to the oscillations of the human heart. He has revealed how patterns emerge naturally when systems, whether biological, physical, or social, interact in just the right way. His research on coupled oscillators, complex networks, and nonlinear dynamics has reshaped how scientists think about everything from brain function to the spread of ideas.
At Cornell, Strogatz is known as a gifted communicator who bridges the gap between advanced mathematics and everyday experience. His lectures attract students from across the university. In books such as Sync, The Joy of x, and Infinite Powers, he writes with clarity and wonder, turning abstract ideas into stories that feel alive. His voice carries the same enthusiasm whether he is explaining calculus or describing the geometry of friendship.
What sets him apart is not only his command of mathematics but his warmth and wit. He listens as carefully as he speaks, often finding metaphors in the natural world or in a casual conversation with a colleague. His humor disarms. His curiosity invites. Watching him adjust the metronomes, eyes bright behind his glasses, it is easy to understand why students and collaborators describe him as both rigorous and kind.
Beneath it all is a belief that mathematics is not separate from life but a language that reveals its beauty. The dance of the metronomes, the firing of neurons, the movement of planets, and the laughter shared across a classroom all express a single truth about connection and harmony.
In person, Strogatz radiates calm delight in the act of discovery. The photograph from that afternoon shows him resting on his arms, thoughtful, as the metronomes begin to fall into sync before him. It is a quiet moment that suggests something larger, a glimpse of the universal tendency toward order and the human impulse to understand it.

A groundbreaking Stanford Study lead by Dr. David Spiegel has revealed what hypnotists have long known about brain activity whilst under a hypnotic trance.
That is: some parts of the brain function differently under hypnosis than during normal consciousness. In essence, hypnosis indeed alters brain patterns and activity.
These findings might help explain the intense absorption, lack of self-consciousness and suggestibility that characterize the hypnotic state.

No trains from my station today as various contractors were busy desecrating bits of the platform. Two blokes walk into the station with this lump of metal, but it didn't have the board on until I was wandering around on the platforms before home time.
Anyway, the engineering works saga continues, as does the abuse and general ignorance (some bloke tried to punch me on Friday, so today wasn't a day for trying my patience). Thank Darwin I'm on Annual Leave for two weeks.

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), measures a number of metabolites that are important to maintain healthy brain function. PET scanning can provide a window into brain chemistry by measuring neurotransmitters and receptors for neurotransmitters, which gives a picture of where in the brain biochemistry may not be working well. The MRS can complement the PET findings by allowing us to look at chemicals in the brain that PET scanning cannot measure. Combining genetics, PET, and MRI will give us a better understanding of how these complex factors interact, how treatments changes those interactions, leading to more targeted therapies, and better outcomes.
When Vince was young, he seemed disinterested with his surroundings and was quiet. Everybody thought that he was just a shy little boy. At 3 years old, he still hasn't spoken a comprehensible word. He was soon brought to a child specialist and was diagnosed with Autism.
Autism is a disorder of brain function that appears early in life, generally before the age of three. Children with autism have problems with social interaction, communication, imagination and behavior. Autistic traits persist into adulthood, but vary in severity. Some adults with autism function well, earning college degrees and living independently. Others never develop the skills of daily living, and may be incorrectly diagnosed with a variety of psychiatric illnesses. The cause is unknown.
He is currently going under therapy.
