Is Grapefruit Keto Friendly?
Grapefruit is a famous name when it comes to the fruit world. Some might find it sweet, but I personally do not like grapefruits because of the sour taste of too much citrus acid.
Though the research has proven that grapefruits help lose weight. It has numerous benefits for which one should include grapefruits in their breakfast.
People with a keto diet might find it troublesome to include grapefruit in their schedule. Therefore, is grapefruit keto friendly?
You are about to find out when you reflect on this article through my intensive research.
After reading this article, you will have a clear idea about the benefits of grapefruit, a conclusion about grapefruit being keto-friendly, and other alternative fruits that can be included in the keto diet instead of grapefruit.
Enjoy!
What Do We Know About Grapefruit?
The one mystery about grapefruits is that no one drives the conclusion of whether they are sweet or sour. They contain a sufficient amount of citrus acid, which will help kill harmful bacteria inside the body. Citrus acid also lowers the pH level of urine and helps with human homeostasis.
Coming to grapefruit once again, they are widely known as the Fruit of the Gods. The reason behind this wholesome title is that they arrive in various colors, such as pink, white, yellow, and most interestingly, different colors come with slightly different tastes.
The darker the outer region of a grapefruit, the sweeter it will get. Grapefruit is also used to make juice which is even more delicious.
Therefore, if you ever need to refresh your guests on a summer morning, you know what to serve them.
Ketogenic Diet- What Is It, How It Works, And What Are The Benefits?
So, what is the keto diet? It is a standard method of diet used by many celebrities over the years, which helped them stay fit and healthy. A keto diet restricts the amount of carbohydrate consumption in your body.
A person with a keto diet should consume a minimum of 20-50 grams of carbohydrates per day. In doing so, your body reaches a stage called ketosis, where the metabolic enzymes start to burn down stored fat for aerobic respiration.
It is also suggested to include food with high fat in your keto diets, such as cheese or avocado.
How does a keto diet work? You start taking too much fat and protein-based food every day and lower the level of carbohydrate intake. In months, you will notice that you are gradually losing weight, and your body’s metabolic activities have increased a lot.
What are the benefits of a keto diet? As is already mentioned keto diet burns the stored fat in your body; therefore, your body will start to lose weight.
Furthermore, it will also decrease inflammation and increase your brain function. Because of low carbohydrate consumption, you can now maintain your blood sugar level and put an end to diabetes.
It also reduces the level of insulin circulating in the body. A ketogenic diet will save from the risk of sudden cancer in the body.
Medical research nowadays suggests a ketogenic diet for all families, and it is also proven that the fitness level of Americans is increasing, thanks gradually to the keto diet.
Nutritional Facts About Grapefruits
Suppose we want to conclude whether a grapefruit is keto-friendly or not. In that case, we need to consider the nutritional composition of an average-sized grapefruit and compare the results with the general rules and regulations of the keto diet.
The table shows the composition of nutrients contained in a grapefruit

At last, we have arrived at the long previous question, “Is grapefruit keto friendly?” From the above table, you can see that the macronutrients contained inside a grapefruit consist of 16.2 grams of total carbohydrates.
From the session: "The Neuroscience of Art:
What are the Sources of Creativity and Innovation?" (February 21 to 26, 2015)
---
In recent years, there have been an increasing number of scientific investigations into art, exploring what actually happens in the brain during the creative process. Most of these collaborations have been based in neuroscience and psychological approaches to how art is perceived, produced and created, with music the main focus of studies carried out to date. These studies have yielded important new information that relates to a very basic fact of human biology: all behavior, even that as complex as creativity, can be linked to brain function. Building on this fundamental linkage, the neurobiology of art promises to yield exciting new insights as this research field evolves. Creative behavioral patterns are likely to be a critical component for developing the neurological capacity for innovation.
This Salzburg Global program represents a pioneering step to establish a neutral international forum to discuss state-of-the-art findings from a cross-disciplinary perspective, prioritize future research, and expand creative opportunities for learning, innovation and collaboration. While much research is taking place in various national and regional settings, more global dialogue is needed between specialist silos in order to catalyze knowledge exchange around the results, implications and potential practical applications of new cutting-edge research.
A representative from the Southeastern Raptor center brought one of Auburn's bald eagles, Sprit, to visit with Auburn University Brain Camp attendees and talked to students about a raptor's brain functions as part of their time on the Plains. CHOLINE INTAKE FOR PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
In addition to a daily prenatal vitamin and a daily prenatal DHA supplement, I also recommend a daily prenatal choline supplement.
What is Choline?
Choline is a macronutrient found in foods. Choline is in the B vitamin family . It is essential in fetal brain development. Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that sends signals in the brain. Acetylcholine, and therefore choline, are important for memory, muscle control and brain function.
Choline is involved in many of the same metabolic pathways as folate, including methylation. Everyone knows folate — or its synthetic supplemental version, folic acid — due to its vital role in the prevention of neural tube. Did you know choline is equally as important as folate for preventing neural tube defects?!
The major reason choline is not making headlines in prenatal nutrition is that it’s a new kid on the block, relatively speaking. The first time we had a recommended intake for choline was 1998. The data used to set that recommendation was fairly weak; it was set based on a depletion-repletion study conducted in adult men & set at a minimum level to prevent liver damage. These figures were then adjusted upwards for pregnancy/lactation based on estimates of fetal needs.
Consuming adequate levels of choline during pregnancy is essential to ensure normal fetal brain development.
Our current recommended intake for pregnancy is set at 450 mg.

Project MK-ULTRA, or MK ULTRA, was the code name for a covert CIA mind-control and chemical interrogation research program, run by the Office of Scientific Intelligence, that began in the early 1950s and continued at least through the late 1960s. There is much published evidence that the project involved the surreptitious use of many types of drugs, as well as other methodology, to manipulate individual mental states and to alter brain function.
It's aims included:
Substances which will promote illogical thinking and impulsiveness to the point where the recipient would be discredited in public.
Substances which increase the efficiency of mentation and perception.
Materials which will prevent or counteract the intoxicating effect of alcohol.
Materials which will promote the intoxicating effect of alcohol.
Materials which will produce the signs and symptoms of recognized diseases in a reversible way so that they may be used for malingering, etc.
Materials which will render the induction of hypnosis easier or otherwise enhance its usefulness.
Substances which will enhance the ability of individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion during interrogation and so-called "brain-washing".
Materials and physical methods which will produce amnesia for events preceding and during their use.
Physical methods of producing shock and confusion over extended periods of time and capable of surreptitious use.
Substances which produce physical disablement such as paralysis of the legs, acute anemia, etc.
Substances which will produce "pure" euphoria with no subsequent let-down.
Substances which alter personality structure in such a way that the tendency of the recipient to become dependent upon another person is enhanced.
A material which will cause mental confusion of such a type that the individual under its influence will find it difficult to maintain a fabrication under questioning.
Substances which will lower the ambition and general working efficiency of men when administered in undetectable amounts.
Substances which promote weakness or distortion of the eyesight or hearing faculties, preferably without permanent effects.
A knockout pill which can surreptitiously be administered in drinks, food, cigarettes, as an aerosol, etc., which will be safe to use, provide a maximum of amnesia, and be suitable for use by agent types on an ad hoc basis.
A material which can be surreptitiously administered by the above routes and which in very small amounts will make it impossible for a man to perform any physical activity whatsoever.
Historians have learned that creating a "Manchurian Candidate" subject through "mind control" techniques was undoubtedly a goal of MK-ULTRA and related CIA projects.

I love music. I come by this naturally--both my parents had musical skill and loved listening to various genres of music. My dad spent a period of time working at a radio station; my mom has been and is currently active in the worship group of her church. In my brother and I, this genetic predisposition translated into self-taught guitar and modest piano skill, respectively; and both of us were in various school choirs.
I grew up listening to music in the car, in the shower, doing chores, doing homework, and to wake me up in the morning. As an adult, this love of music has not faded.
My iTunes collection is one of the major reasons I'm running out of space on my laptop.
And sure, I could go into all the ways that music enhances brain function, the powerful impact of a song's lyrics in conjunction with its melody, the universal way that music influences people. But that's way more of an intellectual post than I'm going for. I know that the brain response, lyrical content, and genres of music I prefer are major factors as to why I love music and listen to it so much. But today I don't need to know any more than that.
I just need to decide which song I want next.

Said to be the elephant's closest living relative (the elephant must not have any close relatives), these cat-sized things are found in Africa and the Middle East, and, according to the net: "early Phoenician navigators mistook the rabbits of the Iberian Peninsula for hyraxes (Hebrew Shaphan); hence they named it I-Shapan-im, meaning "Land of the Hyraxes", which became the Latin word "Hispania", the root of Spain's modern Spanish name España and the English name Spain. ..."
- For your inner zoologist: "The order first appears in the fossil record > 40 million yr.s ago, and for millions of years they were the primary terrestrial herbivore in Africa. There were many species, the largest @ the weight of a small horse, the smallest the size of a hummingbird. In the Miocene, however, competition from the newly-developed bovids - very efficient grazers and browsers - pushed hyraxes out of the prime territory and into marginal niches. ... Some of the descendants of the giant hyracoids evolved to become smaller, and gave rise to the modern hyrax family. Others appear to have taken to the water, and ultimately gave rise to the elephant family, and perhaps also the Sirenians (dugongs and manatees). DNA evidence supports this theory, and modern hyraxes share features with elephants such as toenails, excellent hearing, sensitive pads on their feet, small tusks, good memory, high brain functions compared to other similar mammals, and the shape of some of their bones. ... They retain a number of early mammal characteristics; e.g. they have poorly developed internal temperature regulation (which they deal with by huddling together for warmth, and by basking in the sun like reptiles)." Steven Strogatz has a way of finding rhythm in places most people overlook. In his office at Malott Hall at Cornell, and later in the Space Sciences Building at the SPIF, that rhythm came alive in a simple but elegant experiment. Two small metronomes ticked on a shared platform, gradually aligning their beats as if discovering a shared pulse. Strogatz leaned in, smiling as the synchronization unfolded. The moment captured both his joy and his curiosity, the twin forces that have guided his life in mathematics.
For decades, Strogatz has explored the hidden order beneath the world’s apparent chaos. His work has spanned from the synchrony of fireflies flashing in unison to the oscillations of the human heart. He has revealed how patterns emerge naturally when systems, whether biological, physical, or social, interact in just the right way. His research on coupled oscillators, complex networks, and nonlinear dynamics has reshaped how scientists think about everything from brain function to the spread of ideas.
At Cornell, Strogatz is known as a gifted communicator who bridges the gap between advanced mathematics and everyday experience. His lectures attract students from across the university. In books such as Sync, The Joy of x, and Infinite Powers, he writes with clarity and wonder, turning abstract ideas into stories that feel alive. His voice carries the same enthusiasm whether he is explaining calculus or describing the geometry of friendship.
What sets him apart is not only his command of mathematics but his warmth and wit. He listens as carefully as he speaks, often finding metaphors in the natural world or in a casual conversation with a colleague. His humor disarms. His curiosity invites. Watching him adjust the metronomes, eyes bright behind his glasses, it is easy to understand why students and collaborators describe him as both rigorous and kind.
Beneath it all is a belief that mathematics is not separate from life but a language that reveals its beauty. The dance of the metronomes, the firing of neurons, the movement of planets, and the laughter shared across a classroom all express a single truth about connection and harmony.
In person, Strogatz radiates calm delight in the act of discovery. The photograph from that afternoon shows him resting on his arms, thoughtful, as the metronomes begin to fall into sync before him. It is a quiet moment that suggests something larger, a glimpse of the universal tendency toward order and the human impulse to understand it.
I'm continuing with the wildflowers along the Eno River (see text from previous image). The point is not to just shoot pictures of flowers, but to find extraordinary compositions... this extreme close-up of a Spring Beauty at water's edge fits the bill. Its scientific name is Claytonia Virginica, though Spring Beauty is much more fitting. They're quite tiny (hence the narrow field of sharpness... those are blades of grass looming off in the not so distance)... I noticed that many folks were hardly aware them until I angled the camera toward them. To me, this speaks of renewed life, freshness, restoration, hope, and an eagerness to reach out to a life-giving risen sun (Son)... a likeness to Easter!
A side note: it's been being debated among scientists lately that the color pink does not really exist. Pink is actually a combination of red and violet, two colors, which, if you look at a rainbow, are on the opposite sides of the arc. Remember the old colors of the rainbow mnemonic ROYGBIV? The R (red) is as far as it can get from V (violet). That’s where the trouble lies. Pink can’t exist in nature without a little rainbow-bending help, which would allow the shades of red and violet to merge. There's no such thing as a pink wavelength, so pink exists only within the brain... but that's where all colors exist. A recent study concerning how the brain functions shows that brain activity doesn't always follow neural pathways... sometimes it literally moves from one part of the brain to another in such a way that quantum physics seems the only answer as to how it happens. I don't know about you, but I see a pretty shade of pink in this flower. God created us in miraculous ways... even in so much as to delight us with a shade of beautiful pink! Scientists, go figure out the answers to real problems, like how to lower gas prices.

In medicine, a coma is a profound state of unconsciousness. A person in a coma cannot be awakened, fails to respond normally to pain, light or sound, does not have sleep-wake cycles, and does not take voluntary actions. A person in a state of coma can be described as comatose.
Coma may result from a variety of conditions, including intoxication, metabolic abnormalities, central nervous system diseases, acute neurologic injuries such as stroke, and hypoxia. A coma may also result from head trauma caused by mechanisms such as falls or car accidents. It may also be deliberately induced by pharmaceutical agents in order to preserve higher brain function following another form of brain trauma, or to save the patient from extreme pain during healing of injuries or diseases. The underlying cause of coma is bilateral damage to the reticular formation of the hindbrain, which is important in regulating sleep.
If the cause of coma is not clear, various investigations (blood tests, medical imaging) may be performed to establish the cause and identify reversible causes. Coma usually necessitates admission to a hospital and often the intensive care unit.

The Black Sleep (1956)
dai.ly/x14wrtw Full Feature on Daily motion
England, 1872. The night before he is to be hanged for a murder he did not commit, young Dr. Gordon Ramsey is visited in his cell by his old mentor, eminent surgeon Sir Joel Cadmund. Cadmund offers to see that Ramsey gets a proper burial and gives him a sleeping powder to get him through the night, which Ramsey takes, unaware it is really an East Indian drug, "nind andhera" ("the black sleep"), which induces a deathlike state of anesthesia. Pronounced dead in his cell, he is turned over to Cadmund, who promptly revives him and takes him to his home in a remote abbey. Cadmund explains he believes Ramsey is innocent and needs his talents to help him in an project, which he is reluctant to immediately discuss further. In fact, Cadmund's wife lies in a coma from a deep-seated brain tumor, and he is attempting to find a safe surgical route to its site by experimenting on the brains of others, whom Ramsey comes to learn are alive during the process, anesthetized by the "black sleep", and are taken to a hidden recovery room in the abbey from which few emerge, though they still live...
- Written by Rich Wannen
Old-fashioned as it is, however, The Black Sleep still gets the job done at least as well as most of the movies to which it hearkens back. Most notably, it crystallized a vague sense I’ve had for some time now that it’s too bad Rathbone got pigeonholed so early on as Sherlock Holmes. He had a commanding elegance about him akin to that later displayed by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and which nobody else on the 30’s and 40’s horror scene could match. Lionel Atwill and John Carradine came close on occasion, but Atwill was always a little too foppish and Carradine a little too homespun to play the depraved Old World nobleman with Rathbone’s authority; neither of them would have been up to the challenge of Tower of London’s Richard III, for example. As Joe Cadman, Rathbone simultaneously prefigures the Cushing Frankenstein, and hints at all the brilliant mad movie scientists that might have been if only Rathbone hadn’t been so busy chasing Nazi agents all over the English moors during the years of the second Hollywood horror boom. He might even have injected some unwonted class into a Monogram or PRC production! The rest of the cast doesn’t quite match up to the top-billed star, but most of those who are required to do any actual acting (which is to say, not Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi, or Lon Chaney Jr.) acquit themselves respectably well. Another thing The Black Sleep does right is to incorporate a bit of defensible real-world science into the mad variety more familiar from movies of its type. Much of the film’s horror stems from the certainty that attempting such delicate neurological investigations with the clumsy and invasive techniques of the late 19th century really would produce monstrous derangement's of brain function, even if these specific symptoms (John Carradine’s character is convinced that he’s Bohemond of Taranto— the hell?) are not always especially plausible. Finally, Udo the Gypsy, who in most horror films of this era would be nothing but a comic relief character, is portrayed in much too sinister a light to become as irritating as one might anticipate. His clowning creates more unease than anything else, for it is plainly but a cover for a complete absence of conscience. All in all, The Black Sleep represents a commendable effort to bring some seriousness of purpose back into the gothic mad scientist movie, which had grown silly enough on its own over the years that it hadn’t really needed Abbott and Costello to poke fun at it.
Easily one of the most quotable people I know, Lisa's brain functions in a way unlike any other. I am positive that if the medical community was made aware, they would wish to conduct some scans.
Two-thirds of this triptych were from a little hidden beach about twenty minutes walk from the UVic campus. Last I counted, that's three beaches within easy walking distance. Absolutely in love with this part of the country. Although, technically my phone kept telling me that I was in the United States.
Exercise is great for your mood. It can sharpen the mind, boost brain function and help with managing stress.
The Black Dog Institute has designated the week of September 11 as Exercise Your Mood Week. So take a break from work and get those endorphins going by joining the Open Minds Walk/Run at lunchtime on Friday 17 September.
We will be starting with a group stretch followed by a 30 minute walk or run and then lunch in Printers Court (behind the Education building at 2 Treasury). You will be back at your desk re‐energised and refreshed by 1.45pm.
We are delighted to announce that Lynne Williams (Under Secretary, DTF) and Kym Peake (Deputy Secretary, DIIRD) are our 2010 VPS Exercise Your Mood Ambassadors. Lynne and Kym will be donning their runners in support of Open Minds and leading the running and walking groups.

Ingredients:
-1/2 cup Wild Blackberries
Blackberries:
Polyphenols found in dark berries may help reduce cognitive decline in older age by cleaning up cells that impair brain function, researchers at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston say.
Blackberries are also hugely fiber-rich—one cup has almost8 of the 25 grams you need daily.
-1/2 Avocado
Avocado:
We always have avocados on our counter. They are a big part of our diet. We toss them in smoothies, make guacamole and constantly eat them by themselves. These green gems contain almost 20 vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds that will boost your smoothie real fast and make it extra creamy. They are loaded with heart-healthy fats that will keep your skin glowing and your tummy full longer.
-1 Cup of Pomegranate Juice
(I used Pomegranate Blackberry juice)
Pomegranate juice has been analyzed to have greater antioxidant capacity than red wine, grape juice, cranberry juice, green tea or acai juice. Drinking pomegranate juice measurably reduces oxidative stress (the toxic effects of free radicals) in healthy humans. Much research has shown that pomegranate’s potent antioxidant capacity provides protection against heart disease, cancer and cognitive impairment.
Health Benefits of Pomegranates
Anti-cancer:
Pomegranate has anti-inflammatory effects that may protect against cancer and other chronic diseases.
Pomegranate has anti-angiogenic properties, meaning that they may help to prevent growing tumors from acquiring a blood supply, preventing those tumors from receiving the nutrients that would allow them to grow larger.
Pomegranate is one of the few foods (mushrooms are another) that contain natural aromatase inhibitors. This means that they inhibit the production of estrogen, which can reduce breast cancer risk.
After treatment for prostate cancer, two studies have shown that pomegranate juice or supplements slowed the increase in PSA.
Protects Against Heart Disease.
Pomegranate phytochemicals reduce LDL oxidation (a contributor to atherosclerotic plaque development).
Pomegranate phytochemicals have blood pressure-reducing properties.
In a study of patients with severe carotid artery blockages, after one ounce of pomegranate juice daily for one year, there was a 30 percent reduction in atherosclerotic plaque. In striking contrast, in the participants who did not take the pomegranate juice atherosclerotic plaque increased.
Guards Memory and Brain Function
Pomegranate supplements taken before and after surgery prevented the postoperative memory dysfunction associated with coronary artery bypass or heart valve surgery.
- A Few Drops of Pure Vanilla Extract for flavor
-A Handful of Ice cubes
Directions:
Add everything in a blender & blend until smooth!
Garnish if desired :)
Optional Toppings:
-Topped with Lavender
-Wild Blackberries

Sometimes the photographs that I choose to post on the www offer quick glimpses into my life. You might have seen more than ever recently as I enthusiastically admire my new grandson using my camera. My wife points out often that I usually manage to keep most of the real views of my life away from where they can be seen well and pondered by others. I almost always hope to not be pondered by others. Maybe I have been too well hidden lately. The only photographs I have been interested in are of my grandson. Lately, I have had no photos to show or to keep hidden.
The image above is taken from an actual MRI scan of my brother, Kirk. He is three and a half years younger than me. Kirk is an artist and very talented with drawing, painting, photography and all forms of creativity. I have always fallen short in his realm of talents. His wonderful abilities have always kept me inspired to not fall completely out of touch with the possibility of being creative myself. Now Kirk has run full speed into a brick wall of bad luck. Kirk has cancer in his brain.
After being bedridden-sick for a couple of weeks and not improving, Kirk was taken to the emergency room at the hospital. Tests revealed a large mass in the right side of his brain. The mass does not show in the image above. It was a large, cystic tumor with multiple areas of invasion. Total removal would have resulted in significant loss of brain function. But without removing all that was possible, Kirk would have died very soon. The surgeon was a thoughtful and caring man. Every healthcare professional we have encountered in this adventure has been that way. Super efforts to save Kirk’s life have been evident at every turn.
Kirk’s tumor was a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme. It is so invasive into his brain and so aggressive in its growth, they were unable to surgically remove it all. There are no citable causes or reasons. There is no smoking gun. It is simply not good.
Radiation and chemo will begin shortly. His short-term memory is not great and quite inconsistent. He remembers funny things that might normally be difficult to remember. He sometimes forgets the simplest things. Kirk’s long-term memories are solidly intact. But sometimes he forgets how to work his camera. Or he can’t remember one of the settings among many that he does remember. He seldom remembers if he has taken his pills whether it was five minutes or an hour ago. His words slur at various times during the day, everyday. But his thoughts are usually pretty clear, even if he cannot remember the right word at a given moment. Those of us without brain tumors suffer that same affliction. Kirk’s sense of humor remains in full bloom as it has his entire life. I told him the other day that maybe the surgeon could have removed at least a little bit more of the crazy.
He sometimes cannot muster the patience to figure out a new half-hour sitcom TV show. But later he will watch a marathon of Sherlock Holmes mystery programs with me and he always figures it out before I do. He walks everyday with Patty and me. He humors me by watching baseball with me and even pretends to like it sometimes. He eats more crappy junk food than I do but his weight and blood pressure are absurdly good. I do hate him so.
We all have fear of the radiation on Kirk’s brain. Without it, the tumor will grow back very quickly. With it, any damage caused by the radiation could be permanent. There are many unknowns. The chemo can quickly remove any quality of life that might be left. Some patients tolerate it very well. We will see.
Much of our anticipation is complicated by both of us having watched our mother suffer through truly barbaric chemo and radiation when her breast cancer spread to her brain. That was in 1980. But those memories remain very strong for Kirk and for me. They say the treatment is much better now. We hope they are right.
There is not much else to say. It is five weeks since his surgery. We will keep after it, one day at a time. With Kirk’s permission, I will keep you posted.

Last week when I came home I found a box of Californian walnuts waiting for me. It was a pleasant surprise and it had been packed very nicely. The walnuts were in a wooden box and along with it I found a book titled “California Walnuts Nutrition and Health” by Geetu Amarnani, a Nutritionist and Lifestyle Management Consultant.
DSC07155
I found the book to be very interesting as I got to know about the benefits of walnuts and various recipes and preparations through which I can incorporate walnuts in my daily diet.
DSC07156
According to Dr. H.K Chopra an ounce i.e. 28 g of walnuts a day keep many ailments like cardiac attacks at bay. They reduce LDL bad cholesterol and give 2.5 gms of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) per serving and are the richest source of omega -3 fatty acids which are not manufactured by our body and obtained though diet.
DSC07158
Walnuts contain other minerals and vitamins like magnesium and phosphorus, which are important minerals in energy metabolism, bone health and regulating heart rhythm. Walnuts are a rich source of antioxidants as compared to any other nut. Not just that, Californian walnuts are delicious and eating 1.5 ounce per day promotes heart health, raises HDL cholesterol, decreases blood pressure, and improves the arterial function so as a result making them an essential food for reducing cardiovascular risk. Moreover research has proved that incorporating the right type of fat especially the type found in walnuts is important and helpful to people with diabetes as walnuts help in managing the metabolic syndrome which increases the risk for coronary disease, stroke, liver and kidney diseases and type-2 diabetes.
DSC07159
According to Geetu Amarnani an ounce i.e. a handful of walnuts provide 4 g of protein and 2 g of fiber and fiber provides a feeling of fullness which promotes weight management, lowers cholesterol and improves blood glucose levels.
DSC07160
Walnuts are also loaded with omega-3s, which makes them a good brain food as the brain needs high-quality fats like omega-3s to function properly.
DSC07227
According to researchers, eating walnuts as a part of a Mediterranean diet was associated with better memory and brain function and the antioxidants present in walnuts may help counteract age-related cognitive decline and reduce the risk of neurogenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s.
DSC07237
The taste, the flavour and nutritional value makes it ideal to be used in salads and recipes like walnut halwa, chicken kofta, seekh kebabs, various puddings, cakes and desserts and I will enjoy eating walnuts more now that I have known all the nutritional and health benefits of them. I will also try to have walnuts as an anytime snack as now I know walnuts are naturally gluten, sodium and cholesterol free.
XOXO

She had an aneurysm burst on her brain stem Sunday morning while visiting a friend in Centre, AL. They flew her by Life Force to Erlanger that afternoon. The doctors had to wait until the next morning to run the tests for brain function and she didn't have any. They took her off the ventilator that evening. She went peacefully and wasn't in any pain.
"Engineer at Work"
Week 6
This week's challenge was "at your desk." I had intentions to do something cool at home, but I'm finding time is hard to come by these days. So here's a quick snap at work of things I use everyday. As you can tell, coffee is important to me because it's the fuel that keeps my brain functioning. I also spend a good bit of time each morning grinding beans and brewing it in a French press.

Fariborz Maseeh ’80, MS ’84 explains his philanthropic philosophy this way: “Invest in good causes for public good just as you invest in any prudent venture.”
Fariborz found success as a pioneer in the field of micro-electro-mechanical systems. Today he oversees the Massiah Foundation, which puts the concept of philanthropic investment into practice. Through the foundation, he has become the largest individual donor to Portland State.
In 2005, he gave $8 million to the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. Now he has invested $3.9 million in computational science, (http://www.pdx.edu/insidepsu/feature-masseeh), a discipline that allows researchers to model complex systems such as brain function, regional freeways, even climate change.
Fariborz’s investment in computation science will create graduates who can contribute to the well-being of the region, and it allows for industry partnerships that will advance economic development for Portland as well as the rest of the state.
Fariborz describes his desire to give back to Portland State in simple terms. “My choice is to help where I was helped,” he says. “You look for good managers, good operations, and high future potential. PSU has all three.”

From the 2009 Rett Syndrome golf benefit.
Rett syndrome is a unique developmental disorder that is first recognized in infancy and seen almost always in girls, but can be rarely seen in boys.
Rett syndrome has been most often misdiagnosed as autism, cerebral palsy, or non-specific developmental delay
Rett syndrome is caused by mutations on the X chromosome on a gene called MECP2. There are more than 200 different mutations found on the MECP2 gene. Most of these mutations are found in eight different “hot spots.”
Rett syndrome strikes all racial and ethnic groups, and occurs worldwide in 1 of every 10,000 to 23,000 female births.
Rett syndrome is a developmental disorder. It is not a degenerative disorder.
Rett syndrome causes problems in brain function that are responsible for cognitive, sensory, emotional, motor and autonomic function. These can include learning, speech, sensory sensations, mood, movement, breathing, cardiac function, and even chewing, swallowing, and digestion.
See www.rettsyndrome.com for more information.
