A block of brightly coloured flats is located in the Johannesburg precinct of Braamfontein.

You can see another view of the trains, taken from the Mandela Bridge (at bottom of this frame), and much later in the day, here. This shot was taken from the 25th Floor of Braamfontein Gate, the building previously known as Total House. As Total House, it was an office building, but has now been converted for residential use.

Shot during the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk, 2018. Unfortunately, after the walk, all my camera gear was stolen from the restaurant where we gathered for brekkies, and so I find myself with only my phone for pictures at the mo.

Yesterday (09/12/17) a bunch of four fellow photogs from

St Augustine's Camera Club headed to Johannesburg's old Braamfontein Cemetery to see if we could get a few shots. I'll more than likely be posting a couple more pics from the session quite soon

On Braamfontein Station

One of the oldest Hotels in Johannesburg got a funky make over recently.

Sunrise view of trains at the main Johannesburg Station (a.k.a. Park Station) marshaling yards lined up ready for the Sunday journeys. This morning's activities with Joburg Photowalkers were unfortunately marred when two of the group were mugged and robbed of their photo gear just as we were making our way off the flyover. Fortunately, the police were reasonably close at hand and the gear was recovered in short order. However, it was a stark reminder that in Johannesburg, crime lurks around every corner, and you cannot be too careful.

A time capsule photograph from my late father’s, estate.

I am not 100% sure exactly where this was taken, other than somewhere in the CBD of Johannesburg in the late 1960’s, just after he arrived for the first time. Maybe someone can help here with a more specific location that I can tag? Quite possibly around the Braamfontein area, simply judging by the location of his other photos capture on this roll of film.

I really love his use of empty space, and also the inclusion of the human figure to give a representation of scale. Something I have been experimenting with the past few years in my own body of work.

Strange Faces #7

Taken at the concluding Gala Dinner of the annual Congress of the Photographic Society of South Africa (PSSA), 2017.

Taken some time back at the Banquet for the 2017 Congress of the Photographic Society of South Africa, where I was a speaker on Architectural Photography. The photograph is of a reflection in the mirrored ceiling of Randlords in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Former steam driver, Charlie McClean was 68 when this picture was taken in April 1976 in the Germiston scrap lines. He is pictured in front of “16C” class locomotive No. 815 that he used to drive while at Braamfontein Depot, Johannesburg. Charlie had been associated with steam for over fifty years starting as a cleaner, and progressing through fireman to driver, taking charge on occasions the prestigious Blue Train.

And thanks to Les Pivnic, I learn that Charlie passed on in June 1981.

25NC 3472 crossing the gravel road between Fouriesburg and Sheridan on 28 May 2006.

By this stage 3472 was a Reefsteamers lease/lend engine based in Germiston. She had been transferred there from Beaconsfield in 1990 to work the Joburg to East London express passenger every Saturday as far as Kroonstad. When Germiston closed in 1992 she moved Braamfontein and joined 3404, 3422 and 3476 as part of the pool of 25NC that were working the Cape Town express 'Trans Karoo' every Friday and Saturday. When the railway museum pulled the plug at Millsite in 1997 that terminated the arrangement as there was nowhere else for the locos to receive maintenance. It was then she went back to Germiston under the care of Reefsteamers.

Bongz - Meeting of Styles: Braamfontein

While this appears to have been taken in a deep, rural area, it is, in fact, in the heart of suburban Johannesburg, along the Braamfontein Spruit.

These railway engines (the blue ones), imported from Spain by Prasa, are too big for our railsystem so can only be used on certain routes.

In classic Highveld fashion, a developing late afternoon thunderstorm gracefully rolls in from the North, casting a dramatic backdrop as the evening sun delicately illuminates the sprawling PRASA railway yards in Braamfontein.
