On Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 6:26 p.m., the LAFD responded to a reported structure fire at 327 E. Boyd St. in downtown Los Angeles. The first companies arrived on scene within four minutes to find a one-story commercial building with smoke showing. The businesses were not open at the time and firefighters had to force entry with power saws to make access.
They immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with hose lines, and a truck company was sent to the roof to perform vertical ventilation. As firefighting operations continued, the firefighters encountered increased pressurized smoke and heard a rumbling high-pitched sound. Firefighters identified the changing conditions and immediately started exiting the building and the roof as the situation rapidly deteriorated.
Shortly thereafter, a significant explosion created a massive fireball that enveloped the firefighters descending from the roof via an aerial ladder. The searing heat melted helmets, burned through protective coats and hoods and blistered and charred nearby fire apparatus.
A MAYDAY was immediately broadcast over the radio and treatment began on the 11 firefighters that had been caught in the inferno. All of the injured were working at Fire Station 9 on Skid Row, one of the nation’s busiest. Dozens of additional fire and ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene to assist with medical treatment and fire suppression as the blaze continued to spread.
All 11 firefighters were rapidly transported to LAC+USC Medical Center for treatment. A 12th firefighter was later treated and released at the hospital for a minor extremity injury. All 11 burned firefighters were admitted to the hospital with injuries of varying severity. Thankfully, all are expected to survive and as of the morning of Saturday, May 17, three had already been released from the hospital.
At the peak of the incident, more than 230 LAFD firefighters were on scene and the Major Emergency blaze was declared extinguished at 8:08 p.m., one hour and 42 minutes after it was reported. LAFD Arson investigators are working in conjunction with their law enforcement partners to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the nature of the business at the incident address.

Built in 1847 this 23 metre tower constructed of blocks of Pyrmont sandstone imported from Sydney was initially intended as a lighthouse by Benjamin Boyd, the Scottish entrepreneur, who was then building Boydtown and East Boyd, and planned to base his Steamship Company in Twofold Bay. However, it was deemed unsuitable for the purpose by the Crown and was never commissioned.
Quite a number of such towers dotted the coast during the hey-day of Twofold Bay's shore-based whaling operations, but the others were made of timber and have not withstood the ravages of bushfires which periodically sweep through this area. Boyd's Tower itself was struck by lightning in the 1860s and as a result is missing a section from its top.
The tower was designed by Boyd's Whaling Master, Oswald Brierly (who was also an artist, later knighted and appointed as Queen Victoria's Marine Artist) and was situated just above the treacherous Seahorse Shoals whose presence is only detectable by breaking waves during heavy seas.
Following the collapse of Boyd's financial empire, the tower was taken over by the Davidson family whose Whaling Station was based at Kiah Inlet. During the season the tower was manned daily to alert the Kiah Inlet crews to the presence of whales.
Carved into the ledge of the bottom north widow is a tribute to a popular young Norwegian man who had worked with the Davidson Family whalers. "In Memory of Peter Lia who was killed by a whale, September 28 1881. Aged 22 years."
Late in the afternoon the whalers had set out in two boats in pursuit of an exceptionally large right whale. After both harpoons had hit home the whale made straight to sea for more than 8 miles with both boats in tow. By now night had fallen and George Davidson heard his father call to cut his line as the lines had become crossed. However no sooner had this been done than they heard a violent crash and voices calling for help. The whale had turned and come up beneath the other boat, smashing it in half, it's tail fluke hitting where Peter Lia was sitting.
George Davidson and his crew were able to rescue all other crew members of his father's boat but despite a long search of the area no trace of Peter Lia could be found. Finally abandoning the search they were guided back to South Head by the tiny glimmer of lantern light from the base of Boyd's Tower. John Davidson said later that it was the biggest black whale he had ever seen.
Neither Lia's body, the boat or the whale were ever seen again. Some years later, however, the carcase of a large whale was found washed up on the Ninety Mile beach on the Victorian coast south of Twofold Bay. In it was a rusty harpoon of similar make to those used by the Kiah River whalers.
In 1973 the area was declared a National Park and Boyd's Tower was added to that Ben Boyd National Park in 1976. The site is now administered by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Beautiful old school high on the plains above Boyd, Oregon. Took hours to find it but it was fun to discover until my fingers went numb from the chill winter wind blowing over the land.
Belle Boyd was a 17 year old girl when the war started. This fun loving redhead was not someone you would think of as a spy, but that is what made her effective. Just a few months after the start of the war her town of Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) was already in Union hands. On the Fourth of July she hung a Confederate flag from her home. Union soldiers quickly replaced it with an American flag. Already angered, she could no longer take it when one of the soldiers cursed her mother. She pulled a pistol and shot him. She was placed under house arrest pending an investigation. Sentries were posted around the house to keep track of her.
She charmed the Captain into revealing military secrets. She used her slave Eliza to pass the message to Confederate hands, but was quickly caught. Now facing death for spying and still under investigation for the shooting, she felt this was the perfect time to become a better spy. Perhaps due to her age, or that she was a woman, the matter was dropped and she resumed her business. In May of 1862, General Shields met with his staff in the hotel owned by Belle’s father. Hiding in a closet she listened as the battle plans were drawn up. Riding under false papers, Belle was able to pass the information to the Confederates. A few days later Stonewall Jackson passed near the town. She managed to make her way again through the lines to meet him. She told one of the officers to tell Jackson, “The Yankee force is very small. Tell him to charge right down and he will catch them all.” Jackson personally wrote her a note to thank her after he was able to use the information to his advantage.
She was awarded the “Southern Cross of Honor” and the title of “Captain” for her service. Within weeks she was again discovered and soon a Union prisoner again. She was released during a prisoner exchange at the end of August. Captured and released a 3rd time she managed to sail to England in 1864 where she met and married a Union Naval officer. He died in October of 1866 while on duty. Belle became an actress in England and returned to the United States where she married again in 1869. Divorced in 1884, she married a third time the following year. In 1886 she began giving lectures of her exploits as a spy. Fourteen years later in 1900, she was to address a Union veterans group in Wisconsin when she had a heart attack and died. She was buried there with the veterans serving as pall bearers.
On Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 6:26 p.m., the LAFD responded to a reported structure fire at 327 E. Boyd St. in downtown Los Angeles. The first companies arrived on scene within four minutes to find a one-story commercial building with smoke showing. The businesses were not open at the time and firefighters had to force entry with power saws to make access.
They immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with hose lines, and a truck company was sent to the roof to perform vertical ventilation. As firefighting operations continued, the firefighters encountered increased pressurized smoke and heard a rumbling high-pitched sound. Firefighters identified the changing conditions and immediately started exiting the building and the roof as the situation rapidly deteriorated.
Shortly thereafter, a significant explosion created a massive fireball that enveloped the firefighters descending from the roof via an aerial ladder. The searing heat melted helmets, burned through protective coats and hoods and blistered and charred nearby fire apparatus.
A MAYDAY was immediately broadcast over the radio and treatment began on the 11 firefighters that had been caught in the inferno. All of the injured were working at Fire Station 9 on Skid Row, one of the nation’s busiest. Dozens of additional fire and ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene to assist with medical treatment and fire suppression as the blaze continued to spread.
All 11 firefighters were rapidly transported to LAC+USC Medical Center for treatment. A 12th firefighter was later treated and released at the hospital for a minor extremity injury. All 11 burned firefighters were admitted to the hospital with injuries of varying severity. Thankfully, all are expected to survive and as of the morning of Saturday, May 17, three had already been released from the hospital.
At the peak of the incident, more than 230 LAFD firefighters were on scene and the Major Emergency blaze was declared extinguished at 8:08 p.m., one hour and 42 minutes after it was reported. LAFD Arson investigators are working in conjunction with their law enforcement partners to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the nature of the business at the incident address.

Udell and Soom Ignim, my desert assassin princess who goes by the name of Faruza or Farra. This is just to show how Udell, a vinyl boy, looks next to a resin girl. She is 65cm tall and in brown skin. Udell is in bronze.
