Osaka has a long established and unique geisha community of its own. Referred to as geiko and maiko, the geisha of this region speak the Osaka-ben dialect.
By the 1917, in addition to Shinmachi, Osaka's oldest hanamachi (geisha district), there was also a northern district called Kitashinchi (or Hokuyo-shinchi, consisting of Sonezaki and Dojima), a southern district called Nanchi (or Minami), and another district called Horie.
Nanchi was a gokagai, a confederation of five geisha communities, including So-emon-cho (also known as Shimanouchi or Shima) considered by many to be the centre of pure Osaka Geiko culture, Kuro-emon-cho, Yagura-machi, Namba-sinchi, and Sakamachi. Dotonbori street, which housed the theatre district, was situated in the centre of the five communities of the southern district.
The two most renowned Geisha Houses in Osaka were Tonda-ya and Yamato-ya, both situated in So-emon-cho in Nanchi, the southern district. These two Houses alone employed over one hundred girls each by 1910. The whole of Osaka boasted approximately 5,300 geisha by 1929.
Shinmachi, Kitashinchi, Nanchi and Horie — all enjoyed great popularity and prosperity at the beginning of the 20th Century. However, today only a small portion of the Kitashinchi and Nanchi districts survive to maintain the great traditions of the past.

Had a bit of a saga this evening. Tom spent most of it trying to attach the TV to the wall. Apparently it wasn't overwhelmingly easy, and an emergency trip to Homebase was required! Looks pretty cool now though :-)
