The heaving of the newborn monarch's abdomen indicates that hemolymph is being pumped into its wings. Just two of my 70 newborn monarchs have fallen from their chrysalis before this process was completed and then their wings collapse like a wet paper towel. So I watch closely and, if that happens, I can successfully rescue them by picking them up by their "feet" that are desperately reaching out to grasp a lifeline (my finger or a stick).

About an hour North of Albany, NY, on our way to Port Henry, we stopped in for lunch at Steve’s Place and Lorie was our very friendly and very accommodating waitress. Our party of seven easily created the most noise and excitement in the diner this quiet afternoon but I think perhaps the energy was just what Lorie needed.
Waitress Lorie Chard is an 18-year veteran of Steve’s Place and a lifetime resident of near-by Hudson Falls, NY. I bet if you’re ever in the area and stop in she — and her infectious laugh — will put a smile on your face. Just like she did ours. Thanks, Lorie!

i have never, EVER seen colors like this in lake erie waters. i am amazed! and that color with the color of all of the leaves changing? and a sun setting behind me? amazing!
