We were incredibly lucky to find this normally very secretive owl out in the open and only 5 minutes away from a skittish Great Grey Owl hunting on the same stretch of road. It was nearly dark hence ISO 4000 and 1/20th of a second.

The Boreal Chickadee breeds in all Canadian Provinces and Territories as well as Alaska, Washington and the very north of some eastern US states. In central Alberta, they are not as common as Black-capped Chickadees, but in more northern latitudes, they begin to outnumber the Black-capped Chickadees.
This image shows the chocolate-brown cap they sport as well as the cinnamon colour of the flanks. Their call is much more wheezy than the familiar call of the Black-capped Chickadee.

This Boreal Owl was a very rare visitor to a local park in Calgary, Alberta. Lifer and so wonderful to see.

I wish I could have caught the whole body, but the tail was mostly obscured by an inconvenient twig. This little one was very active and did not pose for long.

Simply a beautiful bird. I was super lucky to have been directed to this wonderful owl and even better was able to point it out to my daughters from distance. I've tried visiting this park a few times in futility in search of this owl, but this time it was in the relative open roosting. Not the best place as it was mobbed by chickadees which is why it's eyes were open on this occasion before falling back to sleep.

Took today off from work (out late last night at a choir concert), and went over to Commonwealth Lake this morning. I heard active chickadees in the trees on the north end of the park. Didn't get any shots of them (pretty dark there, and they move fast), then spotted a large dark mass in one of the trees. Turns out it as the elusive barred owl I'd heard of others having seen. Got a series of it as it posed for me. Eventually it got bored with me, so I moved on. By the way, this is a lifer for me!

Yashka is ready to play continuously, but we are not able to satisfy his requests. And Yashka is often bored, but sometimes he plays with his toys alone, or chases the cat around the garden.

Sometimes, I just sit around bored. I think we all can do that. Oddly my boredom struck a thought in me for this picture. Black Dragon is still very nice for pics. Just saying.

Sethi is quite tough but he still isn't really a fan of winter. Hunting mice is more difficult and on top of that you always get wet feet, either because of snow or because of rain. Generally it's better to stay at home at this time of year but there it's quite boring. Sigh !
This little one came in just after I spread the seeds on my deck rail. I hope it hangs around over the winter now that it has discovered a food source.
