A view of the Norman Foster designed Great Court British Museum roof from the top of the Post Building public terrace in Holborn.
It's not the highest public roof terrace in London but it does have some unusual views given it's Holborn location. It's also free and doesn't require booking in advance.
Following on from the official #Flickrturns20 photowalk in the morning the London Flickr group reconvened on top of the Post Building before setting out for a short afternoon post-photowalk photowalk.
For anyone interested, the next London Flickr photowalk will be on Saturday, March 2nd. More details here if you'd like to come along : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577219...
From the British Museum website, "At the centre of the British Museum sits the largest covered public square in Europe, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court.
Designed by Foster and Partners, the Great Court is a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof with the world-famous Reading Room in the middle.
The 6 December 2020 marked 20 years since the redesigned Great Court was opened. In that time, 113 million people have walked under the glass roof.
Free and open every day to visitors, the Great Court is one of London's most unique spaces.
In the original Robert Smirke Great Court design, the courtyard was supposed to be a garden. However, from 1852 many bookstacks were built, and along with the Reading Room it became the home of the library department of the Museum.
The department stayed in the Great Court until 1997, when it was relocated to the new British Library building in St Pancras. Now empty, the Museum took the opportunity to once again reopen the space to the public."

'cause i am having WAY too much fun with the university library. but it's got oodles of potential!
pardon the "i am cornholio!" hands; i kind of didn't know what to do with myself as i don't know my way around jump shots. i went back later to try again for something more symmetrical, but some guy was in the same section of the floor as me -- what kind of person spends his or her time browsing the old fiction section of the library on a friday night? hah, loser! ...wait...
debating on whether it would be better to crop out the reflection of the light. thoughts?

climbed all the way to the top! DO WHAT I WANT! i started the 365 not knowing what i wanted from it. and i don't mind that i still don't have an answer.
however, what i got from the project were: lessons, inspiration, self-(re)assurance, friendship, knowledge, motivation, odd stares, bruises and stomach cramps from laughing way too much at myself and the things around me.
GAME TIME! get the correct answer to one of these and score swag!
1) which was the first 365 day wherein i showed my entire face–i.e. clear shot, no funny business, no prop? (swag=two 4x5 prints)
2) in how many countries was my 365 documented? (swag=four 4x5 prints)
3) in how many US states was my 365 documented? (swag=one 8x10 print)
4) what is my middle name? (swag=$10)*
i'll give y'all until march to figger it out.
and most importantly: thank you all for putting up with me :) xo

Another shot of the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court – the largest covered square in Europe. The roof was designed by Buro Happold and the architects Foster and Partners, and its blue tint gives the space a slightly other-worldly feel. Not easy to see here, but the Reading Room is a rotunda in the centre, inspired by the domed Pantheon in Rome. It was designed by Sydney Smirke (1798–1877), and work on creating it began in 1854. Using cast iron, concrete, glass and the latest heating and ventilation systems, it was a masterpiece of mid-nineteenth century technology. The room had a diameter of 140 feet (approximately 42.6m). A number of bookstacks were built surrounding the new Reading Room, made of iron to take the weight of the books and protect them against fire. In all they contained three miles (4.8 kilometres) of bookcases and twenty-five miles (forty kilometres) of shelves.
The reading stack is in flux...but always the current book, the next one after, quilting books, and photography magazines or books. In this stack I'm currently reading "All The Light We Cannot See" in bed, ...and "Syllabus" at the dining room table. The Canon book lives on my desk, the Ferrente book I started and will go back to next....and so on. Always in flux. #cy365#captureyour365#whatimreadingtoday

DUMBLEDORE QUOTES ARE THE BEST.
This isn't very good quality, its kinda fuzzy and weird but I like it so :)
HARRY POTTER. OH YES.
i fucking love books. i always have, and always will, though a few things have thrown a proverbial monkey-wrench in my reading romance.
when i was 10-11, i spent pretty much all my free time reading books. i would sit sideways in chairs and read for hours on end, entire summer days gone in a flash of fantasy and fact. books were how i dreamed, how i learned, and how i made sense of the world. but a couple months before i turned twelve, i came down with lyme encephalitis, which made me feel awful in general, but a very specific, unfortunate symptom of it was that i couldn't read without getting incredibly dizzy and nauseous.
this persisted for months, during which i couldn't do much besides lay in bed and listen to the TV or music, though it was also the time i got into taking photographs -- a much less demanding task for my eyes, fortunately. i'm incredibly glad i got so deeply into photography so young, but i do wonder what my life would have been like had i continued to hone my reading skills, and, by proxy, my writing skills more attentively.
after going through visual therapy & my first round of lyme treatment, my symptoms improved to the point where i could read again, though not with the accuracy, attention span, and visual ease like before (the lyme disease also messed with my cognitive skills). it's been ten years since this all happened, and i still struggle with symptoms, but some days are better than others, and on those days, i have been able to enjoy getting lost in books like when i was younger.
the effects of lyme disease on my brain certainly compromised my ability to read, but something else has as well -- something that i believe has compromised many people's ability to read, though only in a very specific way.
i'd argue that the internet very well may have increased people's ability to read due to the text-based interface of it, but decreased people's ability to read longer passages, via a sort of artificially-produced ADD. i've heard this referred to as "popcorn brain," and i'm definitely a victim of it. i often wonder how many children who loved to read turned into teenagers and adults who love to scroll through the internet, but rarely crack open a book.
reading has been shown to have many benefits -- it is a sort of meditation, as it requires someone to focus on one specific task &, if reading deeply enough, one specific imaginary realm -- and it is a complex task, engaging multiple areas of the brain, keeping it "young." reading fiction in particular has been shown to increase empathy, something i find to be circumstantially true -- when you truly immerse yourself in the experiences of someone else, whether they're fictional or not, you find it easier to step into other people's shoes in your real life. additionally, i've found that the more i read, the more vivid my imagination & dreams become, which, for me, as an artist, is a very welcome side-effect.
one of my goals in the new year is to build as strong a reading practice as i can -- and, in the process, step away from the internet, where i often find myself locked into a cycle of anxiously refreshing pages for no apparent reason. i would urge anyone who happens to be reading this and relate to what i'm describing to make steps towards doing the same -- though the internet is a valuable resource for information, and a great way to connect, for someone who once loved to read, there is little more healing than getting lost in a good book. on my journey towards healing certain psychological troubles, i've found i underestimate the power of introducing new, simple practices into my life -- something as little as sitting down to read a poem can completely change a day from dreadful to magical.

Another shot from London Trip been done to death again but as i discovered this is the only real vantage point overlooking the courtyard
From British Museum Website
Great Court: history and design
In the original Robert Smirke design the courtyard was meant to be a garden. However, in 1852–7 the Reading Room and a number of bookstacks were built in the courtyard to house the library department of the Museum and the space was lost.
In 1997, the Museum’s library department was relocated to the new British Library building in St Pancras and there was an opportunity to re-open the space to public.
An architectural competition was launched to re-design the courtyard space. There were over 130 entries and it was eventually won by Lord Foster.
The competition brief had three aims:
•Revealing hidden spaces
•Revising old spaces
•Creating new spaces
The £100 million project was supported by grants of £30 million from the Millennium Commission and £15.75 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The Great Court was opened on 6 December 2000 by Her Majesty the Queen.
Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip of all time. I wasn't thinking about it at the time, but looking at the result, I feel like Calvin would approve.
In truth I don't know WHAT I was thinking at the time, because this is just silly. I guess that's what I get for putting off taking a picture until I'm in a half-asleep fog. The boy and the girl vs. a T-Rex.

I thought it was time for an update of this photograph!
Some of them are recognisable from the original, because I'm using them in my third year as well as my second (whoo! Chaucer!), but most of them are new.

On the 15th January 1759 the British Museum first opened its doors.

Revealing hidden spaces
Revising old spaces
Creating new spaces
The £100 million project was supported by grants of £30 million from the Millennium Commission and £15.75 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Work on the Great Court's magnificent glass and steel roof began in September 1999. The canopy was designed and installed by computer. It was constructed out of 3,312 panes of glass, no two of which are the same.
The Great Court was opened on 6 December 2000 by Her Majesty the Queen.
The British Museum is a museum in London dedicated to human history and culture. Its permanent collection, numbering some 8 million works,is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.
Today the museum no longer houses collections of natural history, and the books and manuscripts it once held now form part of the independent British Library. With the bookstacks in the central courtyard of the museum empty, the process of demolition for Lord Foster's glass-roofed Great Court could begin.
The Great Court, opened in 2000, while undoubtedly improving circulation around the museum, was criticised for having a lack of exhibition space at a time when the museum was in serious financial difficulties and many galleries were closed to the public. At the same time the African and Oceanic collections that had been temporarily housed in 6 Burlington Gardens were given a new gallery in the North Wing funded by the Sainsbury family – with the donation valued at £25 million.
