This image took far too long to complete. Mainly because my PC decided it wanted to start dying on me this week. For days, I couldn't get it to run anything for more than a few minutes without the PC freezing and then ultimately crashing before I could get it to unfreeze. I /think/ I have the problem more or less managed now, but posts may be slower to complete and get up until March. That's when I plan to put a new PC build together!

Designed in the Gothic Revival style and opened in 1931, Sterling is the main library at Yale. It has 5 large reading rooms and 16 levels of bookstacks containing over 4 million volumes.

Rain and high temperatures followed the lovely snow. Unusual in these short, and now dark, days. With no alpine or nordic skiing possible, avalanche warnings in areas that do have snow, and hidden or black ice elsewhere, we headed to the library. I had an image in my head, and these two women almost matched my image.

(I've haunted libraries since the age of about two. Although the Dewey Decimal system changed, most layouts for libraries seem similar—for now. This one has computers to lend, videos to check out, and books online to read. I could see the book stacks in my mind.)

With its synthesis of architecture, art, decoration and ambition, the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building ranks among America's greatest achievements. When it opened November 1, 1897, writers could not find enough ways to herald the new day they saw for American civilization. The grandeur of the building, its size and scope, the noble artwork and fascinating sculpture left many Americans breathless. Many saw the new building as the fulfillment of American intellectual promise and the perfection of American art. One said that it was "likely to long remain unrivaled in this or any other country," while another opined, "Not until I stand before the judgment seat of God do I ever expect to see this building transcended."

In the late 19th century the architectural style of the Jefferson Building was said to be "Italian Renaissance." Today, it is recognized as a premier example of the Beaux Arts style, which is theatrical, heavily ornamented and kinetic. It is a style perfectly suited to a young, wealthy, and imperialistic nation in its Gilded Age. The materials — marble (15 varieties), granite (400,000 cubic feet), bronze, gold, mahogany — were expensive but would last a thousand years. In plan the Jefferson Building is a hollow rectangle with a rotunda, bookstacks and four courtyards occupying the core. (Two of the courtyards have been filled with additional bookstacks while another was partially filled with a recital hall.) Corner and central pavilions are connected by hyphens (called "curtains") and create five-part compositions on the west and east fronts.

The principal front faces the Capitol Building, rising four stories above grade with a low dome covering the central reading room. A monumental split stair featuring the Neptune Fountain rises in multiple flights to the main entrance, with three pairs of sculpted bronze doors. The granite exterior is heavily rusticated and vermiculated at the lowest level but grows finer and smoother as the walls rise. Paired Corinthian columns were employed at the central portico, which also has portrait busts of famous writers framed by circular windows. At the building's pinnacle the "Flame of Knowledge" is gold leafed, as was the copper dome until the 1930s.

Before and After

My second shot from The British Museum, this is the stunning Great Court. It was a pretty overcast day when I visited so there wasn't much light coming through the glass roof which made the area look a bit dull, but after a bit of editing in Lightroom I've ended up with a shot I'm happy with.

I got to the museum fairly early and despite not having been there since I was a kid, I managed to find my way to the upper level quite easily to photograph from this view looking down into the court. I had my camera set up on my mini tripod and managed to get a few shots off before being told off by a security guard who said tripods weren't allowed, but I had what I wanted so didn't argue with him.

I'm going to visit here again in September on my next trip to London to see if I can improve on this shot.

Designed by Foster and Partners, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court transformed the Museum’s inner courtyard into the largest covered public square in Europe. It is a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof with the world-famous Reading Room at its centre.

In the original Robert Smirke design the courtyard was meant to be a garden. However, in 1852–7 the Reading Room and a number of bookstacks were built in the courtyard to house the library department of the Museum and the space was lost.

In 1997, the Museum’s library department was relocated to the new British Library building in St Pancras and there was an opportunity to re-open the space to public.

An architectural competition was launched to re-design the courtyard space. There were over 130 entries and it was eventually won by Lord Foster.

The £100 million project was supported by grants of £30 million from the Millennium Commission and £15.75 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Great Court was opened on 6 December 2000 by Her Majesty the Queen.
